Find a used copy of "3 Chains of Gold," on Half.com or something, that will explain it from one perspective; whether it is Prince's perspective...we will never know.

I saw that movie and never really got it, unless I just make something up with my wild imagination.

Refers to a number of stories in Revelations. Plus the number "777" is the number of the Lord while the "666" belongs to Satan.

There are very specific allusions in the song, but I cannot remember what they all mean.

You know what's also spiritual freaky about this song is that it peaked at #7 on the US Top 40 Billboard charts. Coincidence or Fate?

Well, most of it's in Revelation chapter 13. Take a looksy for urself, ppl. The song makes reference to the things that must pass at the end of time before Jesus returns and God's New Heaven comes down where we will live eternally.

Love the music video to that song


As 4 the "3 chains o' gold" video? Well, It starts off good, 'till after "The max" vid then just spirals down from there! The NPG parts r the best (EG:- the 'jail' bit after "Sexy MF" and the arcade bit in toyko!) The jail part always makes me laugh "We ain't going knowhere were staying right here!"

Shame that "My name is Prince" is edited though (same with "Sexy mf" though I have a full version of that already), damn the video compilation was released a couple of years after the album came out, what the fuck happened there? And why isn't there a vid 4 the song "3 chains o' gold", it says so on the box?

In all honesty, I truly have never cared to understand the song. The complex music and the harmonies are so beautiful that I find myself singing along with it, even if i don't understand what the hell I am singing about. Pound for pound, this has to be one of the most unusual and incomprehensible songs to ever reach the Top 10 from any artist.

The acoustic version on the maxisingle was just as good; the song works stripped down or with everything (including the kitchen sink) thrown in.

Truly one of Prince's best!

They may be referring to the final scene where he signs the contract in Tokyo with the symbol, then buries the chains. The tune is playing in the background.

Oddly enough...I was just listening to this song THIS morning!!! WOW! Coincidence?

I always thought it was a reference to the so-called "seven evil spirits" as discussed in Matthew 12: 43-45...

"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."

My interpretation is that when we try to get our lives in order and finally arrive at peace, 'the devil' or his evil spirits [seven other spirits] will work harder to destroy us. So P's saying that we'll worker harder to destroy these spirits and will eventually be victorious.

I also do think he's referencing Revelations where good finally prevails over evil once and for all. There will be no more pain, no more death; we will be intellectually and spiritually strong...so strong that if evil spirits try to steal our joy, we'll be too strong and overpower them. Destroy them with little effort.

The song actually describes the dying Prince 'killing off' the seven personalities/personnas within him before the rebirth as the singular, no bullshit, no fannying about, the hardass, the reinvented, the bold, the fresh, the guy who'll accepts synchincrocity tying him in knots with Mayte 45 lives down the line or even 57 lives before the current one he's spending as Prince Rogers Nelson, the schizophrenic who hungers for control over his entire world but accepts his mind is havok, the dude who was born with the knowledge that time doesn't exist and Salvador dail was right when he said 'one day when reality's truth is revealed what we perceive as truth will be instantly forgotten in the collective mind we all actually are', the dream warrior (Nightmare on Elm Street 3?) slaying the dragons in his mind, who is, indeed, 0(+>.

Of course, it might just be about a nice hat or a Mars Bar throwing contest with seven competitors.

Who really knows/cares?
