about P's low price WB cd's here

I went shopping today and I noticed that P's WB cd's are very cheap
Purple Rain at $8.00.
New sealed cd's
I don't know in the States, but here they normally double that price.

If an artist earns a percentage per cd,
Doesn't he have the right to get involved in the price it costs?

I mean, maybe the record company is "giving the cd's away" and of couse, the artist will receive less money...

What do you think????

I saw Purple Rain at the record store the other day for $9.99, which is a pretty cheap US price. The again, it was at Target, and brand new releases there are sometimes no more than $13.99, so I don't know hmm

Its pretty normal to find Prince's back cataclogue on sale in the U.K. for about £6.99. I saw a new copy of Emancipation in HMV, last week. It was on sale for £3.99 - that's about $6.00.

Well that sucks, I've been paying pretty damn high prices for old Prince albums on CD.

The record stores buy the cds from the label at a price, then set their own selling price. The artist will get a cut from the wholesale price, not retail. Usually the reduced price cds are old stock and the record stores are selling them at a loss to get rid of them.
IIRC, one of the reasons Prince was having trouble getting his cds in stores when he was doing everything himself was the ridiculously high price he was charging the stores, and demanding payment up front, not "30/60 days after invoice", which would be standard practice.
