Why do reviews, sales, and charts suddenly matter?

Before Musicology came out, most of you couldn't care less about reviews, sales, or charts. You said they meant nothing, and they were only for shitty pop stars. But for some reason, all these things are suddenly relevant to you guys. I'm just curious as to why you suddenly care about these things.

If Prince is currently a shitty pop star to you, why does it concern you?

I didn't used to feel this way, but for some reason, I think that reviews, sales and charts have become more important to Prince. If you were to tell me that you didn't care whether or not he did well, I wouldn't believe it. I think it's important to all of us that he does well. For me, that doesn't mean "sell out," but if doing well on the charts means that people will finally open up their fucking ears and LISTEN, then yes, I DO want him to do well commercially. I am so frustrated about people saying shit about Prince when all they have to do is LISTEN. Do I want Prince to saturate the market like these other no-talent people [Beyonce, Britney, etc?] NO! But, do I want people to pay attention to the music?? Hell fuck yeah!

Okay, but that doesn't mean people like what they hear.

i still don't particularly care one way or the other about them.

however, whenever he releases an album, all of this stuff is submitted as news. this time, there's just more of it, because he's seemingly everywhere.

fortunately it's for a decent album this time around, and well-deserved. with the "comeback" in full swing, there are more reviews, articles, interviews, television appearances, gossip columns, charts, sales, etc. to talk about, so it's being talked about more. i don't know if that translates into caring more about it, but those are just the circumstances of this release, over past releases (such as Rave and TRC).

I'm just saying that people are putting so much weight on these things that they once said didn't mean anything. Like before, the critics were idiots and weren't worth listening to, but now they're so smart all of a sudden. And now everyone wants Prince to hit #1 when they once said charts are for shitty pop stars. If these things didn't matter before, they shouldn't matter now.

It is amazing to me that Prince is so RELEVANT to the World now.

Though I like Musicology the album, it is not my fav by a long shot. I was glad to hear him say on the latest Today show interview that Musicology is a POP album that should appeal to people that are not music club members.

Well, that appears to be the case!

I will never, for the life of me understand what makes something RELEVANT to the rest of the world.

As far as reviews, I have always checked them out. Maybe for justification or to see if someone else *gets it* besides me. Most of the time recently, critics have not *gotten it*. This is what amazes me about Musicology, it sounds much like Rave to me. Simple Prince that is not all that challenging. Still good though, just not great IMO. But for some reason or another, the critics and the world want to pay attention to him now.

Can't wait for Sunday and Monday's shows!!!

Personally the charts, reviews etc. don't matter to me. But common sense would probably tell you that for an artist who has been under the radar for a decade it's going to peak folks interest in seeing how well he does in the mainstream after being "gone" so long...especially on a website devoted to that artist.

P.S. For the price of a cup of coffee, I could sponsor a kid in a third-world country who truly needs the attention. I know how much you like attention, so I'm playing Big Brother today and giving it to you. The most rewarding factor is that it's free for both of us.

1) you must not have been payin attention too closely to this forum because every other day you hear folks whinin about, "oh he should be on the charts! how much has he sold? i hope he sells a lotta records!"

2) coulda sworn you are one of the folks who are constantly joinin in the chorus of "if he had a hit, he'd be relevant again!"

I dont care in the least if ANYONE buys any of his albums! IF I can get I am happy!

Now if the media wants to promote him & put him on tv.. GREAT! That means I can tape more TV Appearances! I have been doing this since 1982! All his award show appearance, performances, etc.

so for me I just get to tape more! I can careless if Prince is Number 1... BUT I am not going to look down on other fans that enjoyed the 20,000 seat arena sell out in cleveland ohio.

WE all had a great time!

i think thayt most people here have more of a feeling of "well, its about time they woke the fuck up" rather than "oh, critics are always right". there is a difference between the two. some critics have panned the release. some have called it the 2nd coming of prince. still, others have simply been neutral or, while praising this cd, they bash his other recent stuff. i don't agree 100% with any of the critics. i'm still glad to see them hooking p up with some press and praise.

I don't think it's about the critics "waking up." If a critic gives it a bad review, it doesn't mean he/she's faulty, it means they simply don't like it. Nothing wrong with that.

I used to lose kip over Prince becoming mainstream popular again and I hoped he would stay away from any situation that put him back into the limelight. But now its probably arrived and I dont really care.

Like you see it, my dear. Like you see it.

not quite--my initial post has been how it is: the constant pleas for an album that sells, an album that doesn't suck or isn't as bad as (insert name of typically dissed prince album here), people wishin he had relevance and had a high-charting album or whatever's clever. now that p's popped back up for everyone else to see and now everything's hunky-dory, people are still buggin about things. dunno why this is--most people are takin all of what's goin on quite well and they dig it, but for others...same as it ever was, same as it ever was....i could care less about awards and chart placement for any musical act that i like, but damn...it's all ridiculous.

see what i'm sayin?

nope, but you missed my point. obviously as a fan of someone's music, i want them to be noticed by the mainstream. i, for one, have never been one of those people who say "i hoper prince stays out of the mainstream". fuck that. i want him HUGE again. i want to see hbo specials, sold out concerts, mag covers, t shirts, posters, videos, the whole thing. that would be cool for me. so, yeah, maybe a critic has an opinion and maybe its not the same as mine. but when i read reviews for come, the gold experience, the rainbow children...three great records...and they were mostly bad reviews...uh huh, i say the critics finally woke up. now don't get me wrong, i know the score. sony simply paid most of these publications to give good reviews. that's how it works these days for the most part. whatever. i still like to read them. today, magazines are like pr assistance...they are not really a voice of the music loving world like they once were. honestly, its not the review that matters, per se, but rather the fact that people are giving him credit for the work he's doing. it is so nice to not hear "oh, is still alive?" when i say i like prince. so nice. and that's why i am glad the man is reviewed postively in mags and papers and tv.

I'd rather Prince became huge with good material instead of lame shit. If Musicology does well, he'll just keep making crap. He'll think this is what the masses really want from him.

that's cool that you think that...it's your opinion and all. but most of us DO like the new cd. so, in effect, most of us DO agree with the critics review. when was the last time you liked a prince release? that is not meant to be salty or anything, i'm honestly interested. did you like trc or rave or news or the vault or anything in the past 10 years?

Generally I think the masses don't really care either way. But for the most part, I think they want some hot tracks that are danceable and have catchy hooks.
