Musicology (the song) - From Non-Fan Perspective

So, I was talking to my sister and she just blurts out, "That new Prince song is on VH1." Then she goes on to tell me how much she really likes it. Now, I think that was probably the worst choice as a single, but apparantly people are digging it. She said most of her friends that have heard it like it too...

I think what's going on hear is that as fans, we've heard similar songs many times over the past 10 years, but the general public is getting is first exposure to it right now. So, I now retract my previous statement that the only reason the song is getting play is due to payola. Yes, payola is enabling people to get the chance to hear it...but it looks like it is growing based on the fact that people really like it.

Well, I really like it. A guy at the Best Buy I went to yesterday told me that he really likes the song and a few of my co-workers like the song too.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

thats so funny i have had the same experience.. even though i like the song.. i've noticed A LOT of non prince fans really grooving on it...

i just think some people over think everything... if it was on sign o the times they'd all be beggin for more like that..

its a great album.. its just a little more raw than most fans are used too... people say they dont hear a classic prince song on here.. i think its only cause he did'nt over do them.. the album has a more organic approach.. its not as polished and shiney... in retrospect a lot of these people will like it more.. prince is definatley on to something..

Well, the thing is...when Emancipation and Rave came out, a lot of fans and critics complained that they were "overproduced." Now you've got the guy making a CD with the majority of the songs having a rougher sound than anything he's done since C&D (which the public didn't hear anyway), and now people aren't happy with that. There's a simple rule in entertainment that says that if 35% of the people that hear/see/read something like it, then it will be a hit. You can't please everyone...

And what's all this talk of "no classic Prince songs?" I'd consider TMK / IEWTMIYL as true classics. ICPAC is another one right up there. I'd even add in A Million Days.
