Up 2 Date Musiclogy Sales insight from vendor/buyer

hey guys-

I work for CD vendor & i have been watching Prince's sales through out the district (Bay Area/Northern Cali) and he really is selling some CD's. His average first day sales was about 50-60 pieces (discs). And today it tapered down to about 40, but that was because alot stores sold out. I think alot of buyers were taking Prince a little light considering his recent so so sales. The soundscan numbers won't be that impressive due to that fact (soundscan is bullshit anyway), but as far as "scan sales" (meaning CD"s that were actually bought by customers) he really is selling well. I tracked other areas; LA looks similar to more, and Nevada, Arizona, close. NY had really goodsales as well....so in the pocket book, critically, & now the recent thorn in Prince's side (not selling records)is put to bed. My man has got a hit, and looks like the sales to prove it...

Soundscan numbers are compiled by a couple factors: album sold (customers or "scan sales") And the big X-factor albums bought (when music store chains-pre buy to sell to customers). So take Eminem for example; he's always praised for selling 1 million records the first week, but that doesn't mean 1million records in one week-it means that thats how much was sold from the label to the stores or Vendors. So it's a little decepetive. And it keeps the majors with a edge, there promotion call literally buy chart placement. Here is a little known story, Clive Davis fronted Tower records millions of dollars to buy Alicia Keys first record in order to debut at number 1. Whats the best promotion? Of course to say that your promoting the number one record in the country. So it can be abused....
