Question: Under the Cherry Moon wasn't that bad......was it?

I recently brushed up on my Prince movie collection and bumped into Under the Cherry Moon. Okay I know that it wasn't really favored as a good movie but I really feel that it was funny. I don't think the purpose of it was to make some sense out of it, and yeah it did have its corny moments, but it wasn't the WORST movie i've ever seen, in fact I liked it better than Graffiti Bridge. My favorite parts are when Mary has called the guards on Christopher (Prince) and Tricky (Jerome from The Time) and christopher tells her that maybe she could breathe easier if she loosened up her chasity belt....

another funny scene is when christopher finds out that mary was willing to give up the drawers to him, he drags tricky to her house in the middle of the night with a ladder to get to her room from the window but little does christopher know that he has actually entered the bedroom of mary's mother. While tricky has found out that mary's father has come he tries to go get christopher from out of the bedroom and nearly falls off the ladder...meanwhile christopher is talking dirty to mary's mom who thinks its her husband on top of her...and while tricky finally gets christopher's attention by throwing rocks and then christopher tells mary's mom "wait baby I ain't into all of that!" (after he realizes it ain't mary he's humping) but.....

My favorite scene of all is when they are singing Boys and Girls and prince is doing his thing on top of the piano. I thought he was a sexy beast!!! But anyway does anybody else like these scenes or is it just me?????
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Prince ran into bad luck and bad decisions with UTCM .
He pissed off a lot of people when he fired the original director and that is one thing you cannot do in Hollywood. Piss off the right people and your ass is doomed.

Then Prince had a white female love interest which is still a taboo subject and in 1986 it was not going to be allowed in parts of the USA.In fact in muleTown the movie was not allowed to come here.

O.K. picture and is better than many pictures that won acclaim after it's release.

Examples: The Crying Game, Cool World , & Dick Tracy

Yes. It was that bad.

Graffiti Bridge was worse.

SOTT was better than either by a moonshot.

Nowhere nearly as bad as 99% of the movies released in the 80s.

My favorite moment is when Prince and the chick meet for the first time at her party and gave her that look!! Least favorite moment, and why I hate the movie mainly, is how it ended...ruined the movie for me!!

No it wasnt bad. I prefer it over PR. I definetely prefer it over GB. Prince was at his absolute funniest in this movie. Thats what UTCM was all about: playfulness, humor, flirtatiousness. A lightheaded effort and attempt to show he had humor, charm and all that jazz. Yes there were some corny and extreme "Ooookaaaay" moments in the movie, but so what? It wasnt meant to be a frikkin mellodrama epic that some people make it seem like it should've been. The album to complement the moive was hot, Prince was at his hottest, everything about UTCM and Parade was and still is absolutely wonderful to me. Cue my signature...

yeah, I think at the time maybe even Prince was taking it a little bit too seriously. if you relax, you will see it as it is meant to be, as a comedy with a great soundtrack. i watch it all the time. it is in black and white so it makes you feel as if you don't know what time period you're dealing with and the scenery is awesome. Prince's one liners are classic. I mean this movie gave us WRECKA STOW! and the classic scene where Mary calls Christopher and when she asks him what is he thinking about he says SHEX! yo i'm going to watch it today!

I really like this movie. It's a fun, lighthearted film with some great music.I never understood why critics hated it so much.Yes,it has a few flaws, and some of the acting leaves much to be desired, but as a romantic comedy,it somehow works. It's certainly alot more enjoyable than 'Graffiti Bridge'.

Very good point. In an era that gave us such crap as "Howard The Duck" and those sucky Rambo films,I think "Under The Cherry Moon" is a pleasant little film.

I think you can only like this film if you're a Prince fan - there's no other reason to watch it really.

It failed because most people were expecting a follow-up to Purple Rain, both visually and musically, and it was just so different - much kudos to Prince for having the audacity to go his own way.

The main thing that made Purple Rain so great was the fantastic on-stage performances - what 'Cherry Moon' lacks is these performances of the songs, but the character and storyline don't provide an opportunity apart from the Girls and Boys performance, finally Prince on stage doing what he does best. He has a great sense of humour and the visual, but he isn't an actor and if you take this film seriously, as I'm sure film critics did at the time, you will be let down.

I think popstars should play popstars if it's just an excuse to promote an album. Like Eminem did. If you wanna be an actor proper, don't go anywhere near the soundtrack!

Your response is acceptable wink But seriously, PR was nothing but one looooong music video with bad lightning. HEY, I think that hits it right on the head as far as Prince videos in the 80's are concerned! lol

Have always preferred this movie to Purple Rain. It's funny as hell. Jerome and Prince work quite well together. And the music is simply beautiful.

I love UTCM, it's definitely a classic. The costumes, the music, the location.

It showed him for true comedian that he is.

His scenes with "Tricky" are hiliarious and Mary Sharon (no breasted winch wink )
was a good choice.

But the music is the true hero in this movie. I wonder U, Alexa de Paris, Snows in April, damn beautiful moving music.

I can't wait until they do the trifecta release later this year. I just hope they did it right with outtakes and everything, because you know Prince was probably playing some serious practical jokes on the set.

It'd be neat to have the outtakes that weren't released version of the CD also.

Truly the one movie I've played the most over the years.
