After this tour, should Prince also retire "New Power"?

I really enjoyed Lovesexy. The New Power Soul concept was intriguing as part of the whole "this is not music, this is a trip" mind fuck. Pretty cool, but the concept of New Power should have been ditched at the end of the Lovesexy tour.

Why has an extremely creative man who changes his band members and musical styles so frequently stayed so loyal to this New Power concept? It has been 16 years now.

I know the name of the band isn't too important. The NPG is just something that as a fan has always annoyed me. Am I wrong? Are there people out there who think the New Power Generation is a cool name for a band?

If Prince is going to retire a bunch of his classic songs and move on, I wouldn't mind if he left that "New Power" thing behind too!

I remember one review of last tour refering to his band as "Prince and the Rainbow Children".

That would suck!

Prince & The Banished Ones?

Prince & The N.E.W.S.? Huey Lewis would love that.

When you keep changing the line-up, when is The NPG no longer THE NPG?

Question: I've never known if "New Power Generation" means Generation as in age group, or a "power generator" like a motor? Maybe a dumb Q, but I bet I'm not the only one!

I never particularly liked the way Prince expanded the term 'NPG' to mean anyone. I mean,
his backing band is the NPG and so are all the fans. I prefered it when the name refered to
a particular set of band members. We know who 'The Revolution' were, and we know who
the (original) 'NPG' were. It would have been better to ditch the name when that band split.

Excellent question.
I don't think the band needs a name. If I was in Prince's band, I wouldn't mind being called "Prince's Band"
Prince & The Revolution is a hard name to beat. It's up there in "& the Wailers" and "& the E. Street Band" territory. So why try?

I agree, too. Enough with The NPG already. He should've ditched that when he ditched the band back in early '96. biggrin

I don't mind it when it's referred to as the call letters "NPG" versus "New Power Generation" - THAT sounds dated when you say the whole title.

It was pretty cool the way he'd change the name of the band according to the time/mood/era. If he ditches it, cool. If he keeps it that's cool too - just PLAY mutha muthas...

If he dropped the name for the band, I wonder if he would also then rename the music club?

Personally, I wouldn't mind. I feel kind of silly when I tell a friend that I'm a member of the NPG Music Club, and they have no idea what I'm talking about. Then I tell them that its Prince's music club, and they're like, "Oh, yeah, he has some good tunes, I always liked Raspberry Beret."

He should just be "Prince." That's what talk show hosts say, when he's scheduled to perform.

"We have a great show for you today: Prince is here..."

It's never, "Prince and the NPG/New Power Generation," (in fact, aside from Arsenio, I don't recall anyone acknowledging the band...)

It's true he has kept the name, but the musical concept has been very different. The first NPG was other, thing, the ST-MB-MH-TB period was other kind of music. Same than the NPG during New Power Soul, or this last band.
Probably he hasn't thought a better name, but the bands are totally different...

For me, this band is musically the best by miles, and I LOVE IT.

clapping I completely agree.I never understood why he held on to the whole "new power soul" and "new power generation" concepts for so long.He used to be the type of guy who would move on and try something new after a certain era was over.I understand that the whole "new power" thing obviously meant alot to him, spiritually and otherwise, but by 2004,it's definitely time for a change.

I enjoyed the whole New Power Generation concept up through "Chaos & Disorder". After he broke up that band, I do wish that he had changed the name. First off, that seemed to represent the band with Tommy, Sonny, Mike B, et all. Second, the concept was getting a little old by then.

His current band doesn't have any original NPG members in it, so it just seems a little strange to me to call it that. Its time for something fresh and new.

I hope he ditches the name and the band. They are just not on par with The Revolution or the original NPG IMO.

NO! I want MORE band members! I loved when The Revolution ballooned during the "Parade" tour! James Brown tours with 8 horns- and it knocks you out live! I want a fuller Prince sound--the whole bare-bones "Emancipation" sound is not playing up to his potential. cool
