Good Prince story on Foxnews.com

http://www.foxnews.com/st...98,00.html

Prince: Back to Warner Music?

More about Prince 's big night Monday, in which he behaved himself, acted nearly normal, and was actually kind of charming. I liked the fact that at both the induction ceremony and later at his after-hours concert he called the evening "lovely." In his own Prince way, he had a good time.

But is Prince plotting a return to Warner Records? I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago. His remarks last night in his acceptance speech seemed to indicate a new conciliatory mood.

He actually said, "Thank you, Warner Bros. Records, for granting me the permission ... to have freedom."

Interesting, since under the old Warner regime Prince changed his name to a symbol and scrawled the word "slave" on his cheek for videos.

By the way, Prince thanked only one person by name last night: Larry Graham, the legendary bass player for Sly and the Family Stone and his own Graham Central Station.

Prince also got at least two people at different ends of the age spectrum up and dancing: Sean Lennon rocked out to Prince's opening, while Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun was so moved by the Purple One's rendition of Eric Clapton's solo on George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that he leapt up from his seat and started boogieing, hanging the handle of his cane on his wrist.

One other funkmaster got sentimental last night, too: during The Dells' performance, wild man George Clinton slow-danced around his table with his granddaughter. As Prince would say, it was lovely.
"If a man is considered guilty for what goes on in his mind, than give me the electric chair for all my future crimes"

i think that this author paraphrased that quote about artistic freedom. every other account had that written differently. He actually said, "Thank you, Warner Bros. Records, for granting me the permission ... to have freedom."

is this an accurate quote?

A reliable source told me he's definitely going back to WB. IT'S A FACT!

This same source is the one who confirmed that that Prince will NOT do any vocals on the upcoming tour, and that his worth is exactly $479 million (up from what it was yesterday!) Like I said, IT'S A FACT!

Why is everyone so confused about his statement? He thanked Warner Bros for giving him his freedom. (as in 'let me the fuck outta my contract!')

I know that these record companies suck...but let´s be honest. WB indeed gave Prince lots of things too. They let him record everything in ´For you´ and that´s why he chose WB over other 2 companies.
And in terms of promotion and structure, Prince had a giant company to promote his music in the past. ´Diamonds and Pearls´ was heavily promoted.
Prince should decide what he wants to. If he wants his music to sell millions of copies and hit all the charts and MTV, he should go to WB.
I wish Prince was respected doing his thing, like Sting and Springsteen are today. I wouldnt like to see Prince putting teen idols in his albums to sell more. That Santana clip where he is lost in the middle of several teenagers is pathetic.

I don't think the freedom he spoke of was letting him out of his contract. At the time Prince signed w/Warner, he was able to have CREATIVE (didn't mean to scream but needed to make sure y'all understood) freedom. That's why he signed. Course he didn't realize he needed to get his masters, but look at what he got at age 19 (in 1977 or 78 and was the youngest person to do so at Warner)!!!

Because of him, for example, take a look at Van Hunt...whose video shows him playing each instrument. He definitely gives props to Prince for going before and making it happen. Same with the "SLAVE" thing, which if you saw the Tavis show, woke up a lot more artists to the fact that they should be looking at the masters issue, as well just making the industry know it's a 2-way street. Anita Baker is sure happier now that she knows she can fight for her masters too.

Prince has made lots of $ for Warner...and viceversa. Remember, like Billy said in Purple Rain: " 'dis is a bidness". And business always trumps morals in a capitalist society that hasn't yet learned (like a teenager) that others who have gone before do have some knowledge to share about how things get done.

Anyway, that's why Prince will be back at WB cuz he'll make more records & $, plus, "You dance with the one who brung ya". Shows what a standup man he is, cuz they stuck w/him. We'll buy it, and the man has a 25-year track record! The disc may not be blockbusters, but P fans always buy and Warner missed out on the bootleg $.

Or what would really be brilliant is if he doesn't go w/any label and continues to go thru NPG, and just is working the marketing/pr machine (someone to make sure he comes up #1 in the search engines -- much cheaper than a mktg or pr mgr)...ah, who says age isn't beauty. He was working the machine eons ago and now has added wisdom. He's amazing. Thanks for letting me rant.
