lol I remember those guys...they put on a pretty entertaining show. I think they were from Minnie, so their sound is prolly heavily influenced by him.

I thought some of the members were part of the mid 90s NPG. One of their tracks was available for download on the NPGMC in the first year.

Well Prince did write the song 'Rowdy Mac' on their album. I'm sure Prince had an influence on
them, but whether that extended beyond his contribution of that song is anyone's guess.

I thought the Fonkey Baldheads were formed by members of the NPG after leaving. Wasn't it Sonny T, Michael Bland, and, errr.... Morris Hayes? And maybe Tommy Barbarella? Something like that. I think they were pretty short lived. I'm sure Prince must have given them a leg up and studio time, but they didn't seem to run with it... One of their tracks appeared in the first year NPGMC downloads.

The world just didnt need another white boy rapper who wasnt that good to start with. If they ditched him and just let Blackshire sing, they would have been better.

No, that was a totally different band (forget the name off the top of my head).

Fonky Baldheads were awful! Glad to see they dissappeared!

1. Fonky Bald Heads:

Kirk Johnson: Drums
DVS (David Schwartz): rapping
Mike Scott: guitar
Kip Blackshire: vocals
Fish (Michael Herring): Guitar
K.A.T.O. (Kevin Walker): Bass

Additional supporting personnel are credited on the album, including Dudley D on turntables, who sometimes performed with them live.

There is no evidence that Prince appears on their recorded albums, although he did perform live with them at least once: June 16, 2001, Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The Fonky Baldheads were due to provide support at both the 'Celebration' concerts in St. Paul in 2001. They had previously performed during the week the same night as 'The Time' and Maceo Parker. In the end, they only performed on the second night, when Prince made a surprise guest appearance and shared vocals with Kip Blackshire (and played some keyboards) on 'Passin You Name'.

Dansa, I guess, is referring to their non-appearance on the first evening. Prior to the show there is reported to have been a problem with the people setting up the sound, which apparently resulted in delays. Normally, 'soundcheck' admittance is permitted after the sound has been checked, but when the Celebration attendees were admitted to the 'soundcheck', Prince was at the soundboard still setting up, and this continued for some time. He still jammed a bit, but it possibly meant that Prince decided there was insufficient time for a support act that evening - and that may have prompted him to make the early appearance with them on stage the following evening.

2. "Rowdy Mac"

The song is credited on their album, "The Self-Titled Album" as having been written jointly by Kirk Johnson and Prince.

(The song is registered at the Library of Congress crediting Kirk Johnson as sole writer of both music and lyrics, although that doesn't mean that Prince was not co-writer of the composition, as stated on the album liner notes).

I saw them open for him at the Hit & Run show I saw in San Diego in 2001 I believe. They sucked ass and at one point they had some fool from the audience go on stage and they proceeded to shave the dude's head. Prince went on stage and twirled a towel around and got the crowd to chant "fonky baldheads" or something lame like that. I took two friends who I thought would be impressed by a Prince show but man the premature appearance of Prince was the precursor to a very bad night and a very awful Prince show...the man looked bored the entire set.
