The ease with which people talk about HATE

I find it troubling that so many fams in here talk so easily about fans "hating on Prince", other artists "hating on Prince", the industry "hating on Prince", etc, etc.

Just one word of cricism from people and they are already "hating".

Hate is not a word that should be used so quickly in any situation you don't agree with. It should be reserved for the truly hatefull actions and expressions of people, not anytime you feel like it and think it will bolster your opinion.

Sometimes the problem is the misinterpretation of hate. One can mildly dislike something, and use sharp words nonetheless. Doesn't mean they hate.

Right, hate is something else and much worse than dislike. In a group of various people it's normal that some like and others dilike certain things they talk about. But in here some always say that's "hating" when it comes to anything related to Prince. There can obviously be no variety in opinion about topics relating to Prince or you are "hating". I think this happens more than sometimes around here by certain people and I DISLIKE that. There.

It's no secret there's more than a few fans who behave as if they were Prince's big brother or sister or current girlfriend/best buddy. Truth be told, Prince has some virulent critics and he is partly to blame for it through his many poor choices and decisions. Some take their disappointment quite personally though, as if Prince was their personal alter-ego and the changes he made to the "original formula" was a personal treason. For instance, if Prince isn't into being super-sexual anymore, they resent that like they need Prince to be this way almost like they need it to get an hard-on.

Calling it all "hatin on Prince" is puerile, for sure, but there are some instances where it comes close to that or is that..

I agree with that Aero. Nice objective and balanced view you express there. So while I agree I would also like to add that the true hate is truly limited to just some, or better: to just a few in just some specific occasions. Criticism may get excessive and it may seem like hatred to some then, but it really isn't. And the true haters are always singled out, batteled and banned eventually anyway. Therefore I urge the ones, who so easily call people "haters", to think twice before they post such allegations, because it is not nice, reasonable or productive to a good discussion, to put people - who try to be objective and speak their mind in a critical manner - on the same par as as the few true "haters".

Curious. Is this a language complaint you have Abrazo. Are we merely discussing the use of the word "hate" versus some other, less virulent word? Are we talking about the traditional use of the word hate (strong dislike/loathe) or are we talking about the word "hate" as it has been coopted by modern vernacular (envy, criticize, discredit).

Personally, when I see that term thrown around here it seems to be the latter. Certainly hate, on its own, is an ugly word. But it's a matter of context. For example, if someone says "Rick James is just hatin' on Prince" , to me that is not that worrisome. That's just an accusation that Rick is discrediting Prince based on jealousy or envy.

As far as I'm concerned we are discussing both. But I get your point and agree that it is usually the latter. My point however is that the word hate is too strong and has too many - much more serious- connotations than the words "dislike" or "criticise" have.

I do realise it's often a matter of the use of the word hate as being "coopted by modern vernaculary", but even that makes me wonder why people have such a poor vocabulary and why they can't be bothered to express their sentiments or opinions in a less extreme way. This often causes misunderstanding and offended reactions and is not productive to a good discussion. And even when the word hate is used that way; it doesn't make it right when people are calling Rick James, for example, the worst names and making the worst allegations. That in fact seems more like hating than what rick james has actually said about Prince, which these same people consider "hating".

Think the same
thumbs up!
In this case, on one hand HATE loses its real meaning, on the other hurts the person and causes negative emotion. Better 2 B exact of what one wants 2 say.

So it's about linguistic precision then is it. Well, Abrazo, that is certainly a laudable goal. I fear it may be a bit naive where the majority of contributors here are just casually B.S.ing about Prince, but I do appreciate your concern.

hater wink
