"Kiss" on the Lovesexy tour

I've heard it said that Prince never plays "Kiss" live with the same arrangement, judging from most recordings and concerts I've been to that sounds right, but I've been listening to the Lovesexy version and it sounds pretty much the same to me, bar a few horn licks...

Kiss is one of those Prince songs like When Doves Cry that never really sounds good live. It is great on the album, but just doesn't work live.

nod I agree.I find that most of Prince's "stripped down" songs never seem to sound good in a live setting.

It was this version that inspired me to do a rock version of it with the band I'm in. LOT'S of fun, and people dig it. Always a surprise.

I agree that KISS often doesn't sound great live, (damn half the song is all about the LM-1 pattern!), but that's not always true.

When Eric and the guys add in a lot of the extended version horn parts, and Wendy does a lot of the chicken scratch guitar throughout instead of just the last verse, it sounds a lot better.

Plus, I saw Sheila do it as an encore back in '86 (from the show my avatar is from) and she kicked it!!!

I definitely DON"T agree about When Doves Cry. That sounded awesome live on the PR tour, especially the extensions.

Sheila does a cool jazz version of it as well that turns into Girls and Boys.

And I like Sheila's "Kiss".

It's not a bad version. I do like the audience's participation in the song. But the whole emulating the video and stuff was beginning to get routine for my man.

Sorry, I'm basing this on the Lovesexy Live 1 video version, not any bootleg. I love to collect bootlegs, though!

Speaking of Sheila and her versions of "Kiss" there is a live version I heard her do back in '86 called "Dick". Same musical arrangement, changed lyrics."You don't have to be a pimp to crack my whip...You don't have to be cool to wanna drool...ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with. I just want your extra extra long...dick."
