PRINCE'S AXEMEN & AXEWOMEN

Alrighty Orger,

Your vote on Prince's best guitatist...answers should envelope both musical technical profeciency, unique styles, different "flavors" brought to the mix, rapor with the other band mates at the time, and yes, stage craft and appearance.

Pssible Candidates:

Dez Dickerson
Wendy Melvoin
Mico Weaver
Levi Seacer, Jr.
D.K.(Kat) Dyson

My vote:

DEZ DICKERSON!!

Why? Good stage presence, added a true "rock & roll" edge to Prince's music, abd very adapt at background vocals.

Dez was cool. Wendy may not have been as proficient, but she added colors to the music that Dez never did.

I've actually seen each of these guitarists with Prince and I can't really choose which one would be the "best".

Dez-great pressence and great rock player
Wendy-funky as dog shit, and she plays the richest chords I've ever heard
Miko-funky and added a lot of pressence because he could dance and get the crowd pumped up too
Levi- not all that impressed, loved him on bass however
Kat Dyson- didn't like her at all in Prince's band, I do like her with Cyndi Lauper however
Mike Scott- He could almost get a vote for the best because he could play the rocking solo AND funky rhythm stuff too.

But my favorite would Wendy nod

My Favs in order from top to bottom:

Miko - Sounded the most like Prince...especially his funk.
Mike Scott - BLAZIN'.technically the best. versatile.
Levi - smooth & funky. SexyMF guitar solo.
Dez - 80's type o rock style...
Wendy - Good basic rythym player.
Kat Dyson - Not 2 diss, but I really wasn't feeling any soul from her at all. Maybe I need 2 hear her differently, or more stuff from her... I don't know.

Peace.

Wendy

For total VIBE, 'rich chords' like someone said, left field funkiness, total commitment to the music, absolute charisma...Wendy is practically the most engaging band member Prince ever had. The only one who competes really is Shelia E.

i cannot hear all this so called rich chords than wendy play, i saw lots of videos of her live and she did pretty basic chords most of the times.

I liked Wendy only cause she was there when I was growing up with Prince, she was my hero. But when it comes to actual guitar playing virtuosity, they all pale in comparison to Prince himself, so in a way, someone like Wendy was perfect to step aside and let the master play.

This chord doesn't look so basic to me...

...and she often plays lots of these chords, it's her trademark. Check out the way she voices the chords on 'Purple Rain' in the video 'Prince and the Revolution Live 1985' or the chords of 'Waterfall' in the music video. Some of these chords are real finger breakers.

Easily Mike Scott. I saw Prince and Mike battle at a Paisley party and EVERYONE I talked to agreed that Mike took Prince down that night.

"Modernaire" from Purple Rain was such a good song! You only get to hear 30 seconds of it, but it sounded great! I wonder if it was ever officially released anywhere, or if Prince has it in the vault somewhere, as I'm sure he wrote it.

Any input on that?
