Take a look around no one is buying rock n roll. The public wants funk.

Are you on dope? Listen to the radio, Rock is HUGE right now.

---
The top ten pop songs are all Rap this week for the first time. I am not saying Rap is better than rock. I am not a Rap fan but, Rap is the new pop music. In addition, no one is going to buy a rock album from a black guy today.

Well it goes without saying that Hip Hop is the voice of the current youth. However, it doesn't change the fact that bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Metallica, Korn, yada yada yada are selling a ton of records.

---
I think all of those bands suck ass and rock just does not sell like rap or rnb.

Uh...did you ever hear of Lenny Kravitz? wink

But seriously, this is all great news! 2004 could be a very good year for Prince and his fans. And it will be the 20th anniversary of 'Purple Rain',so his profile will be higher than ever.

---
The only people who take Lenny seriously are the screaming white girls who go to his shows. I think Lenny could do a 100% more than what is doing but, he is to caught up in the rock and roll image.

The only black rockers who sold any records were
1 Chuck Berry
2 Jimi Hendrix
3.Prince
4.Living Colour.
5.Lenny

Keep in mind that there have only been 5 in the last 50 years. Prince needs to make his major label debut with something dance oriented.

That's not true in Europe. For months in the UK, Rock albums (not singles) have had an iron grip on the top ten.

People are sick of manufactured garbage, it still dominates in the singles chart, but i'm glad to see 'real' bands selling well again.

Prince deserves to join in on that.

Nothing particularly 'rock' about the US charts at the moment. The Brits are always a little bit ahead of the trends.

Billboard Top 10 Albums

1 OutKast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
2 Bad Boy's Da Band, Too Hot For T.V.
3 Sting, Sacred Love
4 Dido, Life For Rent
5 Dave Matthews, Some Devil
6 Limp Bizkit, Results May Vary
7 Martina McBride, Martina
8 R. Kelly, The R. In R&B Collection: Volume One
9 Nickelback, The Long Road
10 Obie Trice, Cheers

Charts are so pointless, aren't they? I mean just because the majority buy (or in our case, sell) the most of something that makes it the best or most popular? And since we know Clear Channel and MTV dictate these things, it just seems fascist to me.

MTV is trying very hard to sell the US on this new 80's type metal band from the UK with a Freddie Mercury sound-alike lead singer (I can't for the life of me remember the name).

The Darkness!!

Does anyone from the UK know what I'm talking about and if so, what is your real opinion about them? Are they part of the new 'rock' trend?

Memory edit!

u from the uk? theyre huge right now, its bizarre, i used to get called a puff (gay) walking round leeds with me long hair but now im all cool and like the darkness. on average since this band have come out i get mentioned in relation to the darkness once a night. plus a few of my mates love the band and say its great cos they remind them ofme!!
my opinion of them is that theyre great really. much smarter than people give them credit for! alot of people try to dismiss them as spinal tap but obviously thats shit (ie spinal tap is about people taking themselves seriously). the lyrics are better than you first think, especially songs like givin' up and stuck in a rut. its abit too derivitive at the moment, very aerosmith/ac/dc/queen/led zep but it will be good to see how they develop. there are some licks on their album that hint at some proper led zep brilliance IMO. the problem is their videos are so tongue in cheek its hard to realise its a joke sometimes, and at some point they will want some real cred and it might be hard if people think theyre jokers cos of their videos!! anyone else like em?

I wonder if this is what 'The Chocolate Invasion Is Here' refers to on the email we received recently???

Purple funk hittin' the airwaves, a Purple Rain revival, retieval of the Masters, a new video...

I'm panting like a puppy! lick

So this is an underground hit. I'm from the US, but I think our view in the States will be that they are a parady band, so they won't get the same respect the UK kids are giving them. Just for my information, how old are you? Were you around during the 80's hair band era? I'm intersted to see if this is nostalgia or just a brand new market...

I don't want a "rock" or "funk" record from Prince. I want it all mixed up...kinda like the Gold Experience.

lol.

he needs to do a rock album. rock is back now, supposedly, prince needs to pull his finger out and show people (ie people who dont visit this site) that he can rock as hard as anyone. plus as far as black artists doing rock, there are very few in the maintstream - it would be nice to see more. i cant think of too many that are selling a whole lot of records. i mean lenny, enjoyable as he can be, doesnt exactly have the greatest rep. he doesnt have many ideas of his own either, lol. in fairness though, you could probably say the same for the strokes and co.[/quote]

In ATL the New Rock station is 99X and that's where I 1st heard Hey Ya by Outkast. Strange but true.
When it comes to funk, i am junkie

'Freddie Mercury sound-alike'? I don't see that. I DO think the singer is incredible though. "Get your hands off my Woman, Mooo ther fuuuckeerrr!": all done in fallsetto and neo-operetic wails. the music sounds like Turbo-negro to me, though. It's "rock N' roll" with qoutes around it.

Prince recently completed a video shoot in L.A., as we all know this, and is expected to release an album thats a throw back to the 80's, the artist is using the same elements and formula's that caught the music buying public in the first place.

Now where have I heard that before?

Oh yeah, RAVE.

Rock is back but not good rock. Stupid Green Day and Cure wannabes, that's it. I would love a good rock record out of Prince as well but I don't see it becoming a formula for success though. Then again, who cares. Just give us a good album. if the public can't take it, screw them!

BTW, how many people believe this story? Sounds like a rumour and a radio rumour at that. I doubt if it's true! Radio people don't know shit about music (just listen to the dail sometime).

Yeah, I guess the interview I saw had a sound bite about the lead singer's first experiment with his falsetto and he sang "Bohemian Rhapsody", so that's where that idea came from! His vocals are more like the guy from Queensryche.
