Prince (Piano Reheasal) Feb ‘84 in Sunset Sound

https://youtu.be/3VFf-2Dy...6XIzWomOi5

Prince sitting at the 1907 Steinway like he would every day in Studio 3 at Sunset Sound Recording Studio in Hollywood, CA on February 7 1984.

How come these things are suddenly popping up?
There may or may not be something coming!

That's three (already circulating) bootlegs they post in a couple of weeks. I wonder if the Estate greenlit any of this: it's hard to believe an official channel for an official studio would stream unreleased material just like that eek

Nice one.

I reckon I'm losing track on all these piano rehearsals. Was this one already (widely) circulating? Or is it something new to us mere mortals ?

Already circulating for a few years, also in very good quality. Not sure whether this quality is even better knowing it's coming from an 'official' source.

This channel has given us a couple of nice surprises the past weeks, you wonder what else they might have.

I did not compare quality either.
I'm really questioning how official this is. I can't imagine the Estate agreeing with this, nor Sunset Sound risking tarnishing their rep in the industry by bootlegging stuff. This is odd.

I have always liked this rehearsal a lot, even more than the 1983 one. And the Lovesexy Dortmund piano segment is still a highlight of that show for me. He really knew how to play the piano.

Some background info re. the piano used in this rehearsal in this video:

The History Of The "Prince Piano" @sunsetsoundrecorders Plus.. Don Randi performs "Mexican Pearls" (youtube.com)

Of all the legendary microphones, recording consoles, gear, instruments and stories at legendary Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, CA, The 1907 Steinway dubbed "The Prince Piano" has to be one of the best. See how Don Randi was involved with the purchase of this amazing piano and hear him perform his track "Mexican Pearls" which was produced by Sunset Sound founder "Tutti" Camarata.

And the story about the recording session: (Source: "Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 & 1984,” by Duane Tudahl)

The stress of the movie and the rapid pace of recording an album began to take its toll on Apollonia, and she came to Prince for help because she was having difficulty sleeping.
It was common for Prince to look for inspiration by sitting at the piano and just playing whatever came to mind. His engineer would record it to a cassette for him in case there was something worth building into a song or an element that could be added to an existing track.
Prince apparently thought some of his piano playing would help Apollonia’s insomnia, and he sat down and recorded himself running through a medley of some of his songs including ideas for songs that he had yet to record. Among the songs he reportedly played that evening were “Father’s Song,” “Venus De Milo,” “God,” “Raspberry Beret,” “You’re My Love,” “Wednesday,” “Do Me, Baby,” and “Moonbeam Levels.”
At 4: 30 a.m., while Peggy mixed the instrumental that would become “God,” Prince wrote “Poppa’s song” on the cassette and left to take it to Apollonia.

I wish I was a fly on the wall during this session.

They're copies from the bootlegs that have surfaced in recent years. Because they were studio sessions, they must be taking open license to post them on their own channels. The worst that can happen is the estate asks them to remove them.

“To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would – I don’t know, I wish it upon everybody. It’s heaven.” – Prince

They aren't as clear as the circulating boots. Which makes me think they are just after promotion. I have no problem with that, as they are struggling to survive. I just hope the estate don't come down on them and risk killing off a big part of the legacy.

I've sent them an email. I don't expect a reply, but I'll let you know if I get one.

Guys this really isn't hard. They're pulling from the same sources we have had for years, I sincerely doubt they have access to much of anything P recorded there. They likely didn't ask permission to post these things, but at that point it's no different than the myriad other YouTube channels posting booted Prince stuff. It's a little notable that a studio as renowned and ubiquitous as Sunset would be posting random bootlegs, sure, but it's very likely not to draw any ire and it's free marketing for the studio's image - same as the interviews they do with Rev members or Susan Rogers or whoever.

That's all!

Probably. It would be cool if they had the Estate's permission, though. That would be a good sign.

That would indeed be chill. Probably one of those "If you ask we have to say no..." type of deals, though. Ask forgiveness than permission, etc. But I don't think it's a big problem considering there are umpteen thousand channels already with P stuff that the estate hasn't gone after.

Yes I thought I was crazy because why does this sound familiar. Turns out I had already heard it.
