How many of you are younger Prince fans?

I am 16 & I absolutely LOVE Prince, but it doesn't seem like very many people my age listen to him or even know who he is anymore... * sigh*

Are there anyother younger fans out there? If so how old are you and what is the song that really made you love Prince? 💜

Your song that made you discover Prince was Shockadelica, right?

Mine was 'Controversy', and I'm your grandfather, and I was nearly 16 back then (too) when I discoverd that song.

Very nice to see such a young person like you into Prince.

Spread the word Prince with pride and good taste. biggrin

Mind most purple suckers here, and enjoy Prince's enormous output.

I wish I was now 16 discovering Prince!

I'm old.

When I was a teen in the '80s, I was aware of a bunch of Prince songs because they were played a lot on the radio. There was some I absolutely loved: 1999, Let's Go Crazy and Raspberry Beret. But at the same time, there were some I strongly disliked, to include When Doves Cry and Kiss.

Because of that, as a teen I would have said I was a fan of certain Prince songs, but I wasn't necessarily a Prince fan per se.

However, at the time I had a friend who was a massive Prince fan. He was constantly offering to "convert me" to Prince fandom by giving me a proper introduction to Prince's catalogue. I had politely decline his offer, until I heard the song Mountains on MTV. I really liked that song (and the video) and finally decided to accept his offer.

I went to his house and he played a slew of Prince songs. There were two particular songs he played that really grabbed me: Controversy and Let's Pretend We're Married. I was hooked.

All of that is a longwinded way of saying there were three songs that made me a Prince fan: Mountains, Controvery and Let's Pretend We're Married.

Most of the people on this board are grandpa razz lol BUT young people newly discovering Prince is exciting for us oldsters! I remember when my son finally started exploring Prince's music as a teen and mastered some of the guitar solos when he started teaching himself guitar at the age of 18 (after giving up years of trumpet playing in school LOL). That was a great time for me as well. I took my son to 13? Prince concerts--the last one two concerts back to back in a small club in 2014. Can't beat that with a stick! cool

I'm an old MF'er but my 13YO nephew is lurking on this site somewhere. I gave him a Purple Rain CD last year and by now he has gone DEEP into the discography and already has a respectable CD & vinyl collection.

My daughter's 33 now but she's been listening to Prince since she was in the womb. I took her to see him on the Musicology Tour in Atlanta when she was 13, so she got the bonus of seeing Morris Day & The Time that day too.

The lack of people my age (18) on this site is probably because of just how strict the rules are on here when it comes to discussing uploads compared to other fourms, along with the how unfriendly the UI is to users.

I moderate the MJJC and we are much more relaxed when it comes to sharing links to songs/concerts, and we have seen a genuine fluxation in the amount of young people in our fourm.

We get our fair share of dopes asking stupid/reduntant questions, but you gotta remember that they are people interested in the artist and just want to learn more.

Many Prince sites have been shut down for having relaxed rules about uploads. One of the reasons this one has been around as long as it has is because of keeping a tight lid on such activities.

We are however allowed to discuss circulating material in detail and those details are usually enough to then go find the uploads elsewhere.

The ancient User Interface is another thing but altogether. It's not so hard to navigate with a computer but I can see how it would be clunky for those using phones.

I'd say a bigger reason for the lack of younger fans is how badly Prince's music is promoted to the youth. It's a little better now than it was when he was alive. At least you can find his stuff on YouTube and Spotify now. But if they want younger fans then they need to seriously think about licencing deals. Look at how popular Kate Bush got based on one of her songs appearing in Stranger Things. Or how the Spotify numbers for that Tom Petty song multiplied when it showed up in the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6. I know a lot of the old heads on here look down on the idea of Prince's music appearing in videogames and ads and stuff but it's an excellent way of appealing to a new audience. A lot of fans of Stranger Things and Grand Theft Auto probably wouldn't have even known who Kate Bush and Tom Petty were before hearing their songs in the show/game. So it might be something for the guys in charge to consider.

There are a lot of reaction videos from youngsters of Prince singles videos and live performances. Gives me joy to see their in awe faces when they first hear and see stuff we've taken for granted for years. So there are young fans emerging

But the estate are doing nothing to extend Prince's legacy to a younger audience. His live stuff from superdeluxes should be put online for all to experience, maybe a short period after initial sales from their respective releases.
