Battle of the songs: U Got the Look vs. The Continental 1st part of Continental almost sounds like a blueprint from the other song, then turns into something different, with wicked horns, changing dynamics, and sneaking in Carmen Elektra with Tell me How U Wanna b Done, into an album introducing Mayte everywhere. Sorry, Sheena, I go with The Continental, even if U Got the Look is a stone cold classic with a cool sound, real anthem with gender fluid undertone. Hmm, hard choice actually.
What do you think? [Edited 4/2/24 15:37pm]

I prefer "The Continental"...when it turns into "Tell Me How U Wanna Be Done", that seals the deal.

Tough one. I really like both but another vote for The Continental from me. Something BIG Is Coming.

I came back and expressed my opinion. I agree with this point of view, I personally prefer The Continental

u got the look. i like the continental but its just a bit too much. and the ending of u got the look is better than the tell me how u wanna be done part of the continental. u got the look also has more memorable lines.

The rhythm guitar work on the "Tell Me How You Wanna Be Done" portion of the song is beautiful...sounds like Al McKay from Earth Wind & Fire.

No contest: "U Got The Look" by a mile. This song has grown on me so much since it came out. I love the driving beat, the playful lyrics, the guitar sound... it's a classic.

I remember the day when SOTT was released, my dad went to the mall in the morning so I could have it as soon as I got home from school (7th grade)
My 13 year old mind was BLOWN away
I remember listening to Housequake for the first time with my dad and we were both stunned We looked at eachother like ' oh shit! what was that?? Play it again!"
... that was the best part of getting a new Prince album - coming upon that moment where something stops you in your tracks and you can't believe how cool what you just heard was ...
I remember flipping the disc over, I swear I can because there was a skip on LP at the start of UGTL.. I was pissed and I can remember it like it was yesterday.
Maybe that's why I love UGTL so much.. because I associate it with that moment of being able to relax and take in the rest of the album with peace of mind. So, UGTL for sure for me
Anyway, then they put out If I Was Your Girlfriend as the next single and I had a nuclear meltdown

Continental by a light year.

Continental actually reminds me of partyman, more than u got the look

I hear ya. I'm with ya on the notion that "U Got The Look" is a better song, especially the 12" (Long Look). "The Continental" is cool, but I'm not a fan of horns on a "rock song". ...it's like dried fruit in my chocolate, YUCK! "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Anyway, then they put out If I Was Your Girlfriend as the next single and I had a nuclear meltdown Nice recollection. My dad liked some Prince, but it sounds like yours was a real fan. (Dad got into the "trippy" extended version of Alphabet St. He was fairly conservative in many ways, but Santana's Abraxas was one of his favorite albums, so he was open to things.) Not sure what you mean by meltdown. Is that good or bad? Very cool song, but I didn't think it would reach a mainstream audience. (I think that's what you were implying.)

ahahah Meltdown meaning... All I could think of was "Oh God, How am I going to explain it when all the kids are in the record store at the mall and they see Prince's 45 and it's called If I Was Your GIRLFRIEND! Not to mention... it's gonna BOMB and KILL the SOTT album!
| |
Reply w/quote - E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well it did bomb but SOTT had UGTL to save it. Your instinct was spot on. I always remember the only time I heard Girlfriend on the radio. I think it was WBLS (or maybe KISS, the other black station). They tested it out in the morning, then took calls. The first person was a woman who didn't want her son hearing that, etc. Oy. Much too deep for the average listener.

He worked so hard on UGTL, according to Susan R. wonder how hard he worked on The Continental. Half a semi-hard rock song going into a great funky soul track. Should've been two seperate track for me. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

oh wow, then you were in NY too?
I remember that 98.7 Kiss did the top 8 at 8 every day...... the most requested songs of the day. When SOTT was first out, he would routinely have: Dorothy Parker Housequake Adore in the top 8... usually at least 2 of them every night
I don't remember them playing IIWYG.... but yeah,,, not gonna happen IIWYG is in my top 5 P songs of all time,,,, but come on! Warner Brothers must have rolled their eyes in the back of the their heads when he proposed this one.
Oh, but also... Z100 - the pop station routinely had Hot Thing in their top 5 They played Hot Thing more than ICNTTPOYM
I am turning 50 and it STILL bugs me that this album wasn't a major seller!
SOTT, UGTL, Strange Relationship, Hot Thing, ICNTTPOYM = 5 top tens waiting to happen Adore should have been a proper RnB single... that would have been #1 for certain Part of me thinks Starfish and Coffee could have been a bonkers hit too
NY radio did NOT do well by Prince from 1986 onwards They never played Mountains or Anotherlover... The DID play Girls n Boys on Z100, so I thought for SURE it would be the 2nd single and New Position on 95.5 WPLJ (once in a while) Don't get me started on Mountains as the 2nd single from Parade... Another song on my Mount Rushmore that had no business being a single...
For SOTT - you would have thought that he learned his lesson about needing a great 2nd single but NOOP!
AARGH, Prince !

[Edited 4/8/24 5:49am] Yep, Bronx boy since birth. I don't think I ever heard Dorothy on the radio. But I do remember hearing Adore a lot. & getting a thrill when the f word snuck in there. Three out of 5 of those did make the top 10, not bad. I think Doves kinda spoiled Prince. Such a weird song became his biggest hit. After that, he wanted to see what weirdness he could get away with. Serving an extra cup of coffee w/his cream. But yeah, I miss the thrill of a new Prince album & waiting for new songs on the radio. If anyone should have a posthumous hit, it's His Vaultness. That would rock.

U GOT THE LOOK
The music, the lyrics, the attitude - all word class.
What other songs have immortal lines like: You've got the look (You've got the hook)
The Continental ain't nothin' but a side note in P history

It sounds like your dad is/was pretty special. I relate because I was 13 yrs old and a Billboard chart geek at that time. I was also a Sheena Easton fan so when I found this track on the album I almost exploded. Loved it instantly. Even more when I saw the music video.
