I will never understand the disconnect when people talk about that 2017 release as anything like the SDE’s.. it was a short set with a few outtakes.. it obviously wasn’t anything to even be discussed with 1999, SOTT, or D&P super deluxe sets.. & anyone who thinks Prince’s most popular album doesn’t deserve the same attention and respect that the Super Deluxe Versions are getting is just baffling..

Of course it deserves a full former SDE. Eventually.

5 years after
the regular RDE whatever you want to call it? Now that's baffling.

You seriously think the Estate will miss the opportunity to do this again on a real anniversary?

Purple Rain RDE was like 5 releases ago. I'm not saying can PR40 SDE for all eternity... I'm saying save it for a real anniversary, and give a couple other albums a chance to shine before spamming more PR

Because more PR will be spammed again. Some of you acting dramatic like this is the fans last shot at a Purple Rain deluxe edition. Uh, no, it's the fans second-shot in five years. It's enough. Give it some space. What's next, 1999 Super Duper Deluxe? When does this quadruple-dip madness stop?

General public does not care about anniversary releases..

this year could have been the “50th anniversary of Diamonds & Pearls” and it would have done the same numbers..

Purple Rain wasn’t given a proper super deluxe.. it’s as simple as that.

I mean.. I don’t know how 2 additional discs of outtakes and a new purple rain show that isn’t Syracuse.. with a beautiful hardcover book and a podcast doesn’t excite yall? I mean… what??

"The Early Years: 1965–1972". 33 discs. Wow. eek TIL.

I hope one day they will move to releasing sets like some of those 25+ disc Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd sets.. they can still make a vinyl super deluxe and then offer a huge “complete sessions” cd/digital version only..

What a weird false eqivalence, Purple Rain hasn't even gotten a super deluxe release yet. If PR:D 2017 was a large and more comprehensive release then you'd have a point, but it wasn't.

As much as I'd rather "Parade" come next I assume because of the 40th anniversary it's almost certainly going to be "Purple Rain", which is fine if it is massive like SOTT.

If it's not Purple Rain,

maybe it could be "The Symbol Album", as it was ready for SDE release... if I read that right (here somewhere)

or... maybe Parade.

Preferably Parade, but i'm not coutning on it.

The general public don't care about random 30th, 35th or 40th anniversary's of albums. If the estate move to PR next as a SDE, it's because they see the sales numbers of anything PR related being significantly higher than the likes of D&P.

I do not consider myself general public when it comes to Prince. IMHO, I am definitely a die-hard, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around paying for another iteration of Purple Rain. At some point I've got to put on my raincoat. lol

I'd much rather 'Parade SDE' or 'Piano and a Microphone SDE'. I wouldn't even be mad at 'Batman SDE'!

As long as it’s not another rehash, I’d be happy. Needs to be new outtakes, unheard songs, live shows, rehearsals etc. All the good stuff. Will it happen - we’ll see…

This is a perfect opportunity for Warner records and the estate to up the marketing budget for the 40th anniversary. 2024 should be a virtual all year celebration for this Most popular album in the catalog. It can’t just be like the super deluxes of recent times how they have been. The marketing and the cross promotion has to be stellar and on point.I truly believe that having the release around original album release date would be smart. Also if some cross promotion with the movie itself would be smart and ideal. Petition to have the restored movie shown at the AFI and some festivals. Couple that with a major major celebration Schedule in April at the park. This Has to be done right. This is a monumental celebration that should be treated as such.My dream scenario would be the obvious remastered album, the Atlanta show that’s been in circulation, all the B-sides from that era, throw in the birthday show at first Avenue , then maybe throw in a one off concert at Bogart‘s in Cincinnati. Maybe for the rare find for record store day throw in the novelty of the concert that he gave for the school of the deaf. Gallaudet. Basically I’m saying go all out with budget and marketing of the 40th anniversary.
One can dream!

I totally agree.I want to see them GO ALL OUT for this set.An album like Purple Rain deserves nothing less.Get the movie back in theatres.Give us a ton of outtakes and demos that didn't appear on the previous set.Stuff like "G-Spot","Modernaire",etc.Supposedly,there are some outtakes from this era that aren't circulating.Put them on this set!!! We know that there are some amazing live performances from this era,so there should be an incredible blu-ray included with this set.

I'll be curious to see what will be included on the PR:SDE but I pretty much know already it will be outrageously priced.

It will probably be the most expensive of them all so far.

There is no need for the audio of live videos lol

You can rip that yourself, no?

Then, you have three more discs for outtakes!!!

If this is anything less than 7 or 8 discs of vault stuff (not including live!) I will be disappointed.

At the very least, the set has to include 5 CDs of outakes, demos, originals & alternate versions.

It's not that we need or want to pay for the original album again, but if they release a proper SDE of the album, it has to include the remastered album, by definition.

The 2016 remaster is rubbish - it would need a proper remastering.

I would want the associated artists songs on their own disc.

So why not release a Part II SDE and NOT include it?

That would make sense. I'd agree that releases should be more like software, with new versions, updates, patches, etc. But the music industry doesn't work like that, unfortunately.

If they include the 5 unreleased Purple Rain song's that Morris Hayes think is better than the material on the album then I will be more interested in the PR SDE. It's most likely songs we never heard of.

Exactly! That’s the kind of stuff I want to be included on this set.We have all heard the story about Prince submitting 100(!) songs for the director to consider.Put those songs on this set! Go all out!

you guys realize we've very, very probably heard whatever morris hayes heard in that quote and also, to my knowledge, a lot of the "100+ songs" to magnoli was also a lot of stuff that's already been released and/or we've heard.

there's a lot to be excited about even without the hyperbole.
