Thoughts on The Idol... Based on Prince & Madonna?

So I checked out The Idol because everyone was making a hoopla over the use of Prince's image and sound.

And while watching it I ponder the question...

Is this story based on a relationship Prince had with one of his..... "girls"?

The Weeknd's charactor is Prince. He makes refrence to him alot.

Lily Rose's charactor has 2 huge images of Prince in her house.

they play darling niki at the end of the first episode..

just a thought.... Is Lily Rose's character Madonna? They make references to her mother died.

she is a singer on the rise, with the machine wanter her to produce "pop tart" music, while she

wants to create something that last after she is gone.

then she meets this dude who takes her to a deeper place within herself.... using sex as a form of penetration, No pun intended, to

the deeper part of herself.

just a few thoughts after watching the 2 episodes.

meanwhile back to reality.....

New Orleans where U at?

prince is here

God, I hope not. I've heard shitty things about it. The sex scene in episode is has gotten the draggiest of drag reviews. It's the last 11 minutes or so, and makes one wonder - has anyone in this show ever actually had sex? "I wanna grab your ass while you choke on my cock." Uh... unless you're in some awesome 69 position, how exactly is ol' boy gonna pull that off? DOes he have those Mrs. Incredible stretchy arms? LOL

Maybe this is a PW contribution because I'm sure the estate is getting paid for inserting Prince so much into this show. Or maybe the weeknd done squeezed all he could outta mj. He, the character, doesn't resemble Prince to me but I'm sure some will see this con artist (the character not the weeknd) as being like Prince. Or they assume anything sexually freaky will attract Prince fans. Who knows. It isn't interesting to me. I hear there will not be a S2. Wasn't Madonna around her family at her start, nor was she choreographed to pieces? I doubt it's her. More likely more current artist who'd be affeccted by bad SM.

On episode 2 you can see the two huge Prince pictures (SOTT era) she has hanging on her wall.

Both episodes so far contain Prince references.

Interesting how people criticized the sex scenes but it actually made me think of Prince. He was stimulating her with his words same way Prince talked about how "it's about the mind".

Nothing to do with Prince, if anything the juxtaposition is true talent and a truly sexual person, versus phoney posturing.

I tried watching the first episode and I changed the channel after 15 minutes. Pure garbage. It makes "Showgirls" look like "Citizen Kane".

Prince fans: wanting the world to acknowledge him, but hating when they do.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a tidal wave of Prince music in films and TV over the past few years. Maybe the estate are still working out the kinks.

The first episode of the show had very good ratings and they spoke positively of Prince. I wonder if the estate reached out to TheWeeknd or was it the other way around. With these alleged Prince releases coming out, it looks like a marketing plot.

Well since it's been less than a year since they no longer have to answer to a judge I'd wait and see on all that. Given what I just heard is in the new flash movie I expect to see it done to prince soon. It's been debated anout so long.

General audience knows 3 Prince hits max (on a good day, if they're some serious pop culture aficionados) so maybe they think they'd alienate audiences putting songs they don't know.

You're probably right in most cases. Certainly most people under 40. I've not watched this show yet. I'll probably get round to it in the next week or so (because of the Prince references).

In a wider context. I don't know every song I hear used in films and TV shows. If I hear something I like the sound of I'll track it down (I say track it down, at this point the only action required on my part is a quick glance at the lockscreen on my phone). So it could be a good way to get his music out there. He has a lot of it, suitable for a many different scenarios.

I think Darling Nikki was a good choice for a song because it's from Purple Rain and everyone has seen it at this point, including non-fans and ppl under 40.

Well, WB (HBO) only has the soundtracks so they don't have much choices for music to use.

I agree, but just based on how the estate operates everything with the Purple Rain iconography plastered everywhere it just seems like they have no interest in pulling a Quentin Tarantino and busting out some album cuts or forgotten obscuro and pull a "Miserlou" or "Battle without Honor or Humanity" to make a hidden gem into pop culture.

It's again one of the contradicitons of him being the biggest cult artist, or most unknown well-known mainstream artist.

Like I was reading about The Flash flopping, then went to do something else and found myself humming "Rebirth of the Flesh" because the Flash/Flesh are similar words. Why can't we get something like that? L'il Flash opening credits "ooOoHhOOO OOO OO YEAHHHAAAAHghhhghh. AWRITE" People would probably still think the movie and Ezra Miller song, but you might get some "damn what was that opening track? Prince? That skinny muthafucka with the hiigh voice?"

I don't think I mentioned this yet, but recently I was working with a young guy wearing a Purple Rain tee. I was curious how much of a fan he was, so I asked him about it. He could only name 2 songs from the album, and had never heard the whole thing. When I asked him about the movie he said, "There's a movie?" I couldn't believe it.
