Prince @ the 1985 Oscar Awards

https://tiphero.com/iconic-oscars-dresses/

This Was the Most Iconic Oscars Dress From the Year You Were Born

It’s official: Oscar season is officiall...full gear! We, for one, can’t wait to see which film wins Best Picture and which performers bring home golden statues.

But accolades aside, we’re basically just watching the ceremony to see one thing– the gowns. Yep, it’s pretty much the equivalent of watching the Super Bowl for the commercials, a treat for all of the visual folks of the world. No shame in that!

Because we know you can’t wait to scope out the beautiful–and sometimes not-so-beautiful– garments from the upcoming night, we compiled a retrospective of the most memorable Oscars fashion of all-time. And, just to make it fun, we picked the most talked-about dress from the year you were born. Pretty nifty, huh? Here they are, the good, the bad, and the iconic…

#36 1985

We know, he’s technically not wearing a gown, but we couldn’t NOT include this picture of Prince’s getup from the night of his 1985 Oscar win. Lace and sequins? Yes, please!

The singer, then 26, won the last best original song score award for 'Purple Rain,' beating out the likes of 'The Muppets Take Manhattan.'

This story first appeared in the Feb. 5 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. To receive the magazine, click here to subscribe.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is taking heat for a perceived color bias, but back in 1985, there was room for a little purple: That was when Prince won the Oscar for best original song score for Purple Rain. (He beat The Muppets Take Manhattan.)

It had been an exceptionally good year for the 26-year-old virtuoso. The musical drama came out in July 1984, a month after the release of the Purple Rain soundtrack album, which spent 24 weeks at No. 1. Then the $7 million film went on to gross $68 million domestically ($155 million today). The Hollywood Reporter noted that the "flamboyant singer made an unusually subdued appearance to accept his prize."

Draped in a sequined purple cape with high-heeled boots, lace gloves and a gold hoop earring, the actor-singer-songwriter was joined onstage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion by his Revolution bandmembers, Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin. First, he handed the statuette — presented by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner — to Melvoin, saying, "Want to hold it?" His 63-word speech thanked seven people (six of them by first name only) and "most of all, God." Prince, it turns out, was the last person to win the best original song score award. Until there are a "sufficient quantity and quality" of original musicals, the Academy has put the category on hiatus.

I couldn't stand being looked at like that, like some animal in a zoo. People used to stare at Prince like he was an alien or something.

So here we have a crowd chewing up the mid 80's scenery. Dresses and tuxedos way past their experation date already when arrived from production. Hairdos so bad you can't help laughing at it. And here comes Prince with a flower in his hand, bending time and space, sporting a look no celebrity have matched to this day. No one could, can or will be able to pull that style or similar and look grandios while doing it. And his face, hair and sexiness couldn't be touched back then. I've said this many times before and I'll say it again. Prince during the 80's isn't a time capsule. EVERYTHING around him is, but the man stood his own ground. When it came to music, fashion and charisma.

A timeless, time and era defying look. Totally stood out and , in my opininon, never tacky looking even in hindsight, unlike most other celebrities.

This look is so iconic and timeless.

The way he looked and walked during the Grammy Award show where he presented an award to Gotye made me think of this Academy Awards 85 look.

You mean HE couldn´t recognize the talent? Or you?

Anyway....the Beatles are ok but I never found them very interesting. I know it sounds sacrilegious but to me, Prince was always and will always be much, much more interesting musically than all his his heroes combined. It´s just my personal opinion but Prince´s music does so much more for me than the Beatles, Hendrix, Sly Stone, Funkadelic etc. I like them all and they are giants but none of them have or had what Prince had.

And this Oscar ceremony is one of my all time favorite Prince moments. The gown, the attitude, the mystery, the whole package.....simply the most fascinating musician of the 20th and early 21st century to me.

she couldn't, stop busting my balls or ovaries or whatever i have when i wake up exhausted. Prince was phenomenal, had his own sets of gifts, i was just thinking that any one of his talents is probably out of reach for 90 percent of the people who call themselves a guitarist/pianist/singer/writer/producer/dancer, no one like him. I think what the teacher saw, she was coming from a whole different aesthetic, she was white, that's the way i saw it and the beatles were very charming and harmless early in their career, people loved them because they weren't dangerous. Prince had to look like some amalgamation of africa/europe and america which he was and he played that mix up in those years, of course you can't expect some old white teacher to like that. the more eurocentric americans never do appreciate blacks creative work.

ironically, susan rogers tell the story of how she knew prince was entering a phase losing the cutting edge was when he was complaining about how rappers couldn't play or sing. It's the way of nature somewhat, elvis hated the beatles and the stones and the "beards" as he dismissively called the 60's bands in his special. some of that is competitive, some of that is just that you are no longer a conduit of the living breathing culture at that point, you are of the past, no matter how great you are.

Did the teachers race matter in this instance?

She probably was dealing with the whirlwind of craze with Prince in comparison to the Beatles?

It really was that similar kind of manic fandom happening. I think that is a compliment.

i'm sure it did, i liked her a lot, she was a great, dedicated teacher but she certainly had a racist slant to her. she once called a local basketball player, plain "dumb" that even had the white students shaking their heads. It doesn't take much to offend some people's sensibilities, i once told a Jewish teacher I had that Elvis was Jewish, he took offense and just said "no" quietly and shrugged the whole idea off. Fact was, his grandmother on his mother's side was jewish and Elvis never tried to hide it, he wore the star of david at times even though some of his mafia accused him of anti-semitism. Point is, we all have our own definitions of what's good and acceptable, for me, and for prince too, i'm sure, the hip hop shit was stomach churning, absolutely awful. That teacher didn't know how bad it could get. Also, it may have been after the AMA's not the oscars, he didn't perform at the oscars did he? the teacher saw a performance and decided she didn't like him, which, if you watch that performance is impossible not to be impressed in my mind, she saw and heard nothing of value.

annd.....let's face it, Prince was on oddball, he had a lot of black people scratching their heads too as I mentioned in the if i was you're girlfriend thread. there was the story of him running out the theater at the GB premiere because the largely black crowd was calling him a f()*)*(*, don't know how true that is, i saw it on Geraldo.
