Chaka Khan interview: Pop, Prince and Black Panthers: the glorious life of Chaka Khan

Akexis Petridis
The Guardian
Friday, 15 February 2019

Newspaper interview with Chaka Khan, covering her career, promoting her new album and including reference to Prince, their first meeting, and his death:

"She says her last bout in rehab – for an addiction to opiate painkillers prescribed after a knee replacement operation – was provoked by the death of Prince in 2016. They were close friends – he wrote her 1984 UK No 1 Feel For You, and they regularly collaborated. She signed to his NPG label in the late 90s, resulting in the brilliant overlooked album Come 2 My House – although her interactions with him seem to have been as bizarre as everyone else’s.

"They met when he rang her hotel room in San Francisco, pretending, for reasons best known to himself, to be Sly Stone...."

I attended an industry event this past week & was told Chaka is featured prominently in a new Prince documentary! It was screened recently in a private mansion in the Hollywood Hills. The documentary was stalled for a while because of the estates approval. Chaka reveals some never before stories about Prince(r.i.p.) and their close relationship. From what I was told it doesn't sound like the Ava documentary.

"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when eye was doing the Purple Rain tour eye had a lot of people who eye knew eye'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."prince

Kiran was Prince's "manager" for five years. Chaka has known Prince for DECADES.

She should have thought of that.

What?

7 years, not 5. Would suggest Kirans observations in his final years have equal vailidty. Likewise CK's comments seem to be based on hearsay?

He had his demons like we all do....yet he still worked his ass off though immense physical pain. Those of us who are perhaps more well rounded / emotionally intelligent will see that & appreciate far more than others.

You said Kiran refuted Chaka's comment, and that doesn't mean her word trumps Chaka's.

What?

I see where you are coming from. My point being that CK's comments could be percieved as P doing acid in his latter years, however Kiran set the record straight ie in her eyes he never did it in her 7 years there. So, yes both equally valid comments from CK & Kiran reflecting their different times with him.
