The "narrative" about M1 living apart from her husband ("banished" is my word) is an undeniable reality. And, Melanie might have said that, "he wasn't wearing any underwear but I was laughing about it cause there wasn't anything to look at anyway," but the video of him sitting on that swing with his, er, print on full display suggests otherwise.

I didn't say that he lived with her in Spain but that he himself liked to stay in Spain. It was not a place for her "banishment". It was his place for the good times. He loved the nightlife and he had friends there. That was the reality. When they were seperating she mostly stayed with her mother, in Florida and Puerto Rico.

Living apart has a whole different meaning than banished, by the way.

And my quoting Melanie's remark in the previous post was in reply to your saying that you don't believe she turned him down - for her remark and telling him off speak for the opposite. She just got engaged that May.

This expression that Mayte was "banished" I keep reading posted by some know-it-alls below youtube videos and in the comments to the Melanie interview people always "knew" he was "banging her" and other expert "knowledge". It's probably always the same people over and over again and the same who bring this narrative here.

That sounds like Mel B.

nod as soon as I heard Mad Sex I thought those lines were about her.

Tatoos, tongue piecing, animal print clothes, bushy head - bit of a coincidence if not.

She's from Leeds not London but I guess London sounds better. No disrespect to Leeds

'bird' is a UK slang term for woman so he's probably referring to her being from London

You might not like the word "banished" in this case, but how ever you try to cut it, Prince was not in Spain with M1 for the vast majority of the time when she lived there. By that time, M2 was on the scene. That is a historical fact, semantics aside. Whether or not Prince enjoyed Spain and its nightlife is a totally different matter.

Lastly, Melanie's comments after the interview, which, btw, I knew of previously, don't meant that she turned him down. I'm sure they provided a measure of comfort for her new fiance.

I found the interview fascinating. I'm not convinced that Melanie actually turned him down, pregnant or not, as they were BOTH flirting outrageously. (Btw, before today, I never knew that she was pregnant at that time. Perhaps that's why Prince commented on and could not keep his eyes off her "bum" when they were on the playground.) Seems like I remember reading somewhere that she indicated that she stayed at Paisley for at least one or two nights.

She wasn't only pregnant but also had just got engaged shortly before the interview. She said she was there for work and that "he wasn't wearing any underwear but I was laughing about it cause there wasn't anything to look at anyway".

I wonder where people always get this narrative from. He himself liked to stay in Spain.

He was and he loved sexual innuendo just to see how you react. Prince was a big flirt. He couldn't help but seduce.

Okay, let's look at the timeline of sorts. Here is the May 1997 article/interview with Prince when he did Top Of The Pops show in London while Mel B was there. They first met while doing their performances at this show:

*

The Artist informally...

Want to know what happened when Scary Spice demanded to meet O(->? TOTP was there to witness the event and speak exclusively to a remarkably relaxed Artist Formerly Known As Prince

Susie Boon

Thereā€™s a titchy nervousness in the TOTP studio. A group of muscly men with potato-shaped heads mutter into walkie-talkies, while the sound technician fiddles anxiously with his equipment. All eyes are trained on the stage where a small man in a bright white outfit is standing silently.

Suddenly the tension is broken by Scary Spice who struts boldly towards the stage. ā€œAwwwright!" she screeches 30 decibels louder than usual. ā€œI just wanted to say hello, right.ā€ The bodybuilder security peep lurch forward to remove the intruder but prince (otherwise known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince) nods politely at her and Scary scuttles off with a big grin on her face.

ā€œI like the Spice Girls,ā€ admits prince later when he exclusively invites us to his dressing room for a long chat. ā€œI saw them at the Brits and I like their energy.ā€ And what did he make of Scary stomping past his security men to meet him? ā€œSheā€™s great because sheā€™s just so honest. Thereā€™s no deception, no excuses, she just walked up and said, ā€™Hiā€™: Mel B knows herself and what she wants and I admire her for that.ā€

prince leans back on the drab dressing room sofa and shoots another broad grin. For a pop star whoā€™s supposed to be difficult and unfriendly, heā€™s remarkably relaxed and warm. Iā€™d also been warned by his American publicist that Iā€™d only be able to ask about his latest albumEmancipation and on no account could I delve into his private life. So itā€™s surprising when within a short time prince himself starts talking about how he has been coping with the traumatic death of his baby last October, whoā€™d been born with a skull deformity and only survived for a week.

"These have been the most traumatic 14 months of my life but, contrary to whatā€™s been written, I stilt have a positive outlook,ā€ he confides.ā€™ ā€œEverything happens for a reason and youā€ Learn to look differently at a situationā€/ Itā€™sā€™ all part of Godā€™s plan and understanding that helps little.

ā€œPeople donā€™t believe me though, that I do feel positive. Madonna came up to me asked, ā€™Are you realty happy?ā€™ I looked at her and said. Yes I am, and she replied, ā€™No, youā€™re not!ā€™
Iā€™m like, (jumps off the settee with a shocked look) ā€™Wooaah! Donā€™t I know if Iā€™m happy?ā€™ But that seems to be the way people see me.ā€

With that, prince shrugs his shoulders and settles back down, resigned to the fact that other people will never ā€™getā€™ him and will always see him differently to the way he sees himself. Yet,ā€™he makes out, itā€™s not a situation that particularly worries him. ā€œIt doesnā€™t take away from my inner strength. If thatā€™s what people want to think, let them. Itā€™s their problem not mine.ā€

Whatever people may think" thereā€™; no doubt heā€™s in an extremely happy and playful mood today. Dressed in white flared but clingy trousers, five-inch heeled stilettos and a white fur-trimmed anorak top, he has a habit of looking up coyly through his long Lashes - especially when talking about either music or his wife, dancer/singer Mayte, whom he wed on Valentineā€™s Day last year. He also jokes about all the fuss made over him changing his name from Prince to ^ - though even he has to admit that prince is completely unpronounceable. ā€œWell, I never like things to be too easy!" he grins. But his biggest smile is reserved for talking about leaving behind the disputes with his former record company WEA (which had led to him writing ā€™Slaveā€™ on his face) and setting up his own label, NPG Records. ā€œAt last I can sell my music in the way that I want, I have control,ā€™ he Enthuses. Iā€™ve made more money from Emancipation than I have from any other album for years. So, yes I am happy.ā€

Eventually, a faint knock on the dressing room door means itā€™s time to Leave in peace. However, only a few minutes Later thereā€™s a commotion going on in the corridor outside. Scary is back, this time with the four other Spicies in tow, telling the burly security peep just why they should be Let in. The bodyguards relent to Scaryā€™s demands, and the Spicies troop inside. ā€œSo what shall we call you?" demands Scary as she firmly shakes his hand. ā€œJust call me your friend,ā€ he replies with a smile.

Quicker than you can say prince, the girls are whisked back to their dressing room to prepare for their own performance. Scary is of course the last to leave. ā€œIā€™m a fan of his and it was cool to meet him// she declares. ā€™He was nice and friendly and he seemed really happy Well, letā€™s hope Madonna gets the message.

So, they first met February 26th, 1997 at TOTP. Mel B did her interview with him in MN Summer 1998. Per Wiki, she was engaged to Jimmy Gulzar May 1998, pregnant in June, and they were married Sept 1998.

*

Now, is it possible that between first meeting Prince Feb '97 and meeting Gulzar March '98 that she and Prince screwed around while he was on one or more trips to London or elsewhere in Europe? Certainly possible I guess. However, Prince was on a pretty steady US tour that year, and I'm sure Mel B was busy with Spice Girls shows, press, etc.

*

No doubt Prince was flattered by her persistence to meet him and her gushing at what a big fan of his she was - which may be a big part of the reason he allowed her to interview him, along with the fact that she and the "Spicies" were huge during that time, which was great exposure for Prince with the younger crowd.

*

Could Mad Sex have been inspired by her? Possibly, but no doubt there were many women wearing animal prints, with tatoos and tongue studs during that time. I think the song was written about someone he dated in the past as it was recorded in '97 and the lyric is "we used to have mad sex in the horny morning, mad sex in the afternoon...". He also says "and you never really knew my name" which implies someone from the past. And, the "bushy head" lyric I thought was referring to hair in the woman's lower region wink
