? about a lyric in "The Daisy Chain" live @ Fillmore 04-29-2001

about 6 minutes into it he goes:

it was dark, we couldn't see anything and ehm

we just started shooting and
when the lights came on, uh, women, children,
old men, senior citizens, all kinds were dead,
-that's what he said, huh, that's what he said.

that's a pretty dark lyric if it's a prince original. it doesn't really feel like him.

so is it from a song by another artist that i've never heard before? or could it
be from a prince song we don't know? it seems a very random lyric to throw
down in the middle of "the daisy chain", doesn't it?

might also be something from the news that he'd seen recently? he was into
social commentary at that time, so it might be something like that?

I was there that night & I remember thinking what's he going on about? I'm guessing he just wrote it on the fly to add a new element to the performance. What was cool was the band just started jamming the long intro & P was on the mic behind the bar from the left of the stage. It was funny watching everyone trying to figure out where he was. P was the master of creating a moment in a live setting.

that's so cool! biggrin i guess that's why there's this round of applause and cheers at one point
during the performance. he probably moved from the bar onto the stage. i couldn't figure
out why they were going nuts and was envisioning all kinds of things lol

Wow, that hide and seek mischief sounds just like P : ) . Great to hear that story!

Anyone have thoughts on the lyric content?

Funny I was just checking out this show, going through my inventory and rather randomly was drawn to it. Been years since I listened and did not catch the lyrics you mentioned. Prince was in a weird space in 2001 to be sure. Daisy Chain itself is not that accessible lyrically. Who knows what he was on about? So anything seems possible!

I'm intrigued to hear this now.

Never been an era I've been fond of but I'll have to try and seek this out....

It's 21 minutes of funky bliss, especially when P grabs the one eyed bass
