When the hell would Prince have time for this shit? I don't even have time for ouji boards, or finding some devil to sell my soul to. And I'm not a workaholic, prolific artist who recorded daily, mentored other artists, toured around the world, practiced and rehearsed to the bone, managed a studio, and romanced/boinked a lot of women all over the world. (That's just off the top of my head.) I'm an average working mom with aging parents, a needy lap dog, and a mortgage. If I don't have time, he sure didn't have time.

the time issue is one i wonder about a lot, not with any spiritual stuff but with women, women are draining, most men can't keep up with the demands of only one, Prince supposedly was a ladies man but I kinda think it has to be exxagerrated because there's no way to get work done with even one woman wanting your attention. I do know that he may have been good at setting boundaries (as in not taking calls from mayte when he was working) but no woman is going to put up with that kind of thing for long. The spiritual stuff? I could see him making time for it like I do, i pray, sometimes for hours a day if I feel like I need to and I don't really have time for a lot of things either (no relationships for me-friends, girlfriends and hardly any family).

I get what you're saying Pete, but he just wouldn't have the time to make for it from my calculations. Altho he did make time for the JW's - for awhile. But his interest in that seemed to have waned. All that aside, my point I guess is that I don't believe he made any pact with evil forces. He was a savant if anything. But even that may be a stretch. He was talented, even gifted, and he was driven. That combined with a lot of hard work is what made him successful. That's all there is to it.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Von Daniken, similar authors, symbolism, numerology, astrology, mysticism, ouija boards, etc., etc., etc., were very popular in the late 70's and 80's.

Yes, so were Star Wars films, but that doesn't make them true stories.

If making a deal with the devil was a real thing you'd see a lot of Princes out there. I can't think of many teenagers that could resist at any price. Also and again, magic isn't real.

ya, i forgot to mention that, i've thought that a million times, there are lots of people who unfortunately would sell any and everything they could sell for fame and fortune. Also, i happen to think a good portion of the people who say "so and so is illuminati, devil worshiper" are just jealous because they are failures and want to bring a winner down a little bit. Some of their videos are interesting and maybe they have some points. But, mainly, people hate winners, just the way it is. So when Dylan or the rest speak of making a deal, it's either just to feed a myth or may just be figurative, not literal. As in, saying Elvis made a deal with devil when he signed with Colonel Tom, no devil, just someone who would run the dude into the ground for a buck.

To answer the question though...maybe he just practiced a lot? My goodness...

Hey Prince, how did you get so good?"

Prince - "I practiced a lot"

What did you practice? Piano, guitar, vocal skills?"

Prince - "No, Satanism, witchcraft, and a little ju-ju. I'm actually half voodoo on my mother's side".

It's kinda a big question and may open up a whole can of worms, but I'm going to ask it anyway, because I've been thinking about it lately and it has been bothering me. I'd argue that Prince is a once in a lifetime artist, maybe the last one inspiring such awe was Mozart, so even non-fans think his creativity, talent and genius were unmatched by any peers...so I think we can all agree what a rarity he was. He reached the mountain top and had access to all the worldly pleasures that came with that.

It makes me think of the Robert Johnson story, where he made a deal with the devil in exchange for his talent. Although not exactly because there wasn't a sudden improvment in ablility, creativity or talent, people saw this in Prince when he was very young.

I'm not suggesting an actual devil came to Prince and offered him a deal obviously, but more it is a spirtual tumble, when you are young , the things that you think are going to fill you up -sex, fame, money, admiration-don't really and are not soul noruishing in the least. I guess many people never figure that out but I do believe Prince did.

One of the most facinating stories since Prince's death was the Tavis Smiley story about Prince talking to him after Michael Jackson's death how they had some deep, discussions since they were both JWs and how it was possible to balance that or even exist when you are in their position in the world and at their level , at the mountin top. Obviously they could relate to eachother , regarding fame and trying to honor God or the spiritual.

More like is their something about fame, that lifestyle that messes with you mind and resolve that almost makes it impossible to truely lead a viruous life? Like how in the Bible it talks about how it is difficult for a rich man to get into heaven. When you are around a morally corrupt enviroment/people and trying to be a good person...it just seems like pushing a boulder up a hill...

...and for all Prince's faults and shortcomings I have to say at least he had the heart, wisdom and compassion to bring spiritual issues to the forfront in popular music/culture. Which is more than I can say for almost any other artist.

Not exactly the same topic, and sorry if it's already been brought up, but thinking of what it would be like to wrap one's mind around having an enormous, jaw-dropping talent. I'm sure there are as many takes on having such a talent as there are people who have one. Maybe for some, wrapping the mind around all that can be quite a journey.

I think that "...made a deal with the devil" implies that the devil has the upper hand, receiving a soul for bestowing gifts. Please, P knew what he had. If anything, P made the devil a better person. In return, the devil had to release a centuries' worth of stolen souls.
