Because two years after his death with music from the vault coming out with the speed of a snail on vacation, we're running out of things to talk about.

Ridiculously stupid thread. The internet did not nearly break when MJ dioed, if anything i remember much more negativity about MJs death than positivity and people making jokes about Farrah Fawcetts wish for all the kids to be safe and so MJ died, and the Tabloids in the Uk had headlines like "Wacko jacko, Heart Attacko".

.

The same did not happen with Prince, mostly polite respect, as Prince had really extricated himself from the public eye in the mid 1990s. Also is this some litmus test of popularity, because I don't recall the internet crashing when David Bowie, George Michael, Chuck Berry, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher or any other major star dying in the past few years.

The internet DID break when MJ died. He's arguably the most famous man of the last century, he's pretty much known everywhere you go for his artistry. Don't let your own fandom neglect the super icon that was MJ. Prince was not nearly as famous as MJ, so of course the comparison is quite silly IMO. Prince very much like David Bowie were given their respects, but they did not have the same impact online as did MJ and that's just facts. You can love all of their music and still remain sane ya know... I don't even want to think what would have happened if MJ had passed away lets say 2015... I love MJ, Prince & Bowie and don't see no reason why they should be compared at all.. They were all great with different stories.

1. The first reports that Jackson had suffered a cardiac arrest, then that he had died, came from TMZ.com, a Los Angeles-based celebrity news website. TMZ published: "Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50." The Los Angeles Times website confirmed the report at 2:51 pm PDT. The news spread quickly online, causing websites to slow down and crash from user overload.

2. Google initially believed that the input from millions of people searching for "Michael Jackson" meant that the search engine was under attack. Twitter reported a crash, as did Wikipedia at 3:15 pm.

3. The Wikimedia Foundation reported nearly a million visitors to Jackson’s biography within one hour, probably the most visitors in a one-hour period to any article in Wikipedia’s history.

4. AOL Instant Messenger went down for 40 minutes. AOL called it a "seminal moment in Internet history", adding, "We’ve never seen anything like it in terms of scope or depth.

5. Around 15% of Twitter posts–or 5,000 tweets per minute–reportedly mentioned Jackson after the news broke, compared to the 5% recalled as having mentioned the Iranian elections or the flu pandemic that had made headlines earlier in the year.

6. Overall, web traffic ranged from 11% to at least 20% higher than normal.

7. The British soap opera EastEnders added a last-minute scene, in which one character discussed the news with another, to the June 26 episode.

8. During the same period, the three major U.S. networks’ evening newscasts–ABC’s World News, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News–devoted 34 percent of their broadcast time to him.

9. According to an analysis released by the Global Language Monitor, "72 hours after his death, Jackson jumped to the No. 9 spot for the global print and electronic media. For Internet, blogs and social media, Jackson jumped to the No. 2, only trailing the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States.

10. Michael Okwu of NBC News outside UCLA Medical CenterStatistics published by the Pew Research Center suggested that two out of three Americans believed the coverage of Jackson’s death was excessive, while 3% felt it was insufficient.

GoldDolphin.........WHO CARES!!!! And NO, the internet did not "break" when MJ died, because if it did, then you wouldn't have been able to use it! That is the stupidest thing I hear people say, that someone broke the internet. rolleyes And who cares about all the info you gathered and typed about the statistics of the internet, news, etc........SO WHAT!!! None of it matters now, Michael Jackson is dead!!!! Do you think his concern now is who reacted to his death and how many? He doesn't exist here anymore, and the man he was and life he led while he was here, does not matter anymore, because he is gone and he's never coming back again!!!!

When Michael Jackson passed, the internet almost shut down with texts and search engines. I believe Google was temporarily disabled due to exhaustion. It was nuts. Add to it, people were wanting to know about his life, and it got personal a lot.

When Prince died, there were some crazy people typing about him (I don't know why), and saying unkind things about his ex-wife Mayte. In fact, when Mayte released her book about her life with Prince, people got crazy and called her a liar (not true, imo).

One guy I know (he's from America), said Prince's death didn't hit him at all, and he only knew one Prince song and didn't even know the name of it. So I guess reactions to Prince's death was mixed - some were grieving, others were indifferent.

Your thoughts?

I remember that. I think I was actually on the internet when it popped up and then I was booted off and couldn't connect for a time. My thoughts: (If I can remember that far back) Michael's coverage was wall to wall, but it seemed to focus on the music, but a bit of the drama and his "quirks". If I compare, Prince's coveraged didn't seem such a "circus". Maybe because there weren't very many stories of Prince "weirdness" to vibe off of. Maybe because I'm more in the Prince camp, but it doesn't seem like murals went up and buildings were lit up in MJ honor (I guess it pays to have a signature color). I will say this though, when I am out and about, I hear more MJ and Jackson 5 songs in public places than I do Prince songs... which bums me out.

If nothing EVER comes out that's still no reason for the trolling. Besides, yall complain that releases from him are rushed and of low quality.

Why let it bum you out, Prince didn't care one way or another about non fans. He knew he had a loyal fan base, those that really loved his music and him, and didn't give the time of day to anyone that didn't. Prince marched to his own beat, and didn't live or play music to please the world, if you loved him and his music, great, and if you didn't, he just didn't give a s***

Well I just pulled up cnn.com and I had to scroll to the bottom to find Aretha coverage.

When Prince died this was CNN’s home page for an entire day (I think there was a photo of him on the page but the archive site doesn’t capture it for some reason):

When Prince went, the Eiffel Tower went purple

This is false; the image of a purple Eiffel Tower was photoshopped. However, other structures (bridges in Minneapolis, the ferris wheel at National Harbor, the New Orleans Superdome) were lit in purple. (See here: http://www.digitalspy.com...r-prince/)

Hey you! Get out on this dance floor!

Your thoughts?

My thoughts... let's see. When Prince died, I almost shut down and was temporarily disabled due to exhaustion--don't know about how Google responded to either death. I'm this guy from America, and I knew a whole lot of Prince songs. This other guy I know (He's also from America), he's my father-in-law, he might know a Prince song, but he might not know the name of it. I see no reason to ask him, but it's cool that you know a guy, too. As to what happened when Michael Jackson died, I thought, hmmm... I'm not exactly surprised, and I guess all those London shows are off now. Bummer. Kind of how I feel when lots of famous people I'm only slightly interested in die. Like Glenn Frey, for example. But people I'm interested in, like Leonard Cohen, that knocked me for a loop, though I wasn't at all surprised. But I bet there are also people who know even less than one of his songs--though they might have heard somebody sing Hallelujah (but it probably wasn't him singing). Oh, and all deaths affect different people differently--if the people are affected at all. People are like that--they have different reactions and opinions. It's really strange. And they do it with movies, and flowers, and food--some people even respond to, like, different winds in different ways. Crazy, huh?

As to your bit about Mayte. Even if everything someone says about their life is true from their perspective, some people who were there for parts of it will honestly disagree. Those people's opinions matter some. People outside of the events are just taking sides for fun, and rarely have anything significant to say--especially on the internet. Which breaks every two or three days, as far as I can tell. At least, that's what my Yahoo newsfeed says. Generally it involves the Kardashians and/or Instagram. (Oh my... what if one of them died... probably it would be Instagram).

Good talk. Hope that cleared everything up for ya.
