According to Mathieu Bitton who asked Alan Leeds, the Camille LP is fake and never existed as such.

He said it in a really interesting interview conducted by the french Prince community called Schkopi (http://www.schkopi.com/index.php/2017/11/news/rencontre-exclusive-mathieu-bitton/)

I will listen to the interview to see what he said exactly but I find this very odd: the Camille LP has been reported to exist consistantly, by reliable sources, for nearly 2 decades.

Again this is odd, CB was supposed to be 3 LP's (6 sides).

I don't wanna bitch or disrespect anyone, particularly before having listened to the interview, so please take this with a grain of salt, but we know PR Deluxe was mishandled in more ways than one, including regarding liner notes, so if this fellow was behind it, I wonder how reliable he is.

Besides the fact that we have multiple sources talking about it and a 3 LP configuration in circulation that has been confirmed to be from an authentic in-house tape by reliable sources, Mo Ostin himself evoked a 3 LP set in his Prince-related 2016 interview.

Now for example it seems there were at least 2 different configs of CB, with IGBABN and The Cross' order reversed, so why not go crazy and imagine that a 5 LP configuration was developped at some point, then reduced to 3, then finally to 2. But it would be such a revelation that I doubt someone would just drop it in passing in an interview, without giving further explainations.

Could also be a slip, though, and he really meant 3.

Someone just sent me this. I never said it was fake. I just said I asked Alan and he said he never saw it or heard of it being made (which is strange considering he was president of Paisley Park). Also I never said I listened to a test pressing of Crystal Ball at WB offices. I did see and hear (only part of) a CB test Pressing from someone close to Prince). People love to make stuff up.

I've been diggin' you for such a long time
You don't even know that I'm alive
Something 'bout the way you walk just really blows my mind
Sorry, but I'm sick of all this jive, okay?

Let me touch your body baby, let me feel you up
Come on baby, come on, let me feel you up
Let me touch your body baby, Let me feel you up
Come on baby, come on, let me feel you up

I'm sweating girl and it's all because of you
I don't want your credit cards or anything you got
Feel you up is all I want to do, what do you say?

I ain't looking for a one-night stand, I only want to feel you up
I don't really want to be your man, I only want to feel you up
Physical attraction, babe, it's what it's all about
Hot and cold reaction, feel you up, turn you out

Come on baby, come on, let me feel you up

While specific recording dates are not known, Feel U Up was initially recorded in sequence following Irresistible Bitch in late 1981 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was later re-recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California on 27 October 1986, on the first day of sessions for the Camille album (the day after overdubs on Housequake, the day before Rebirth Of The Flesh and Rockhard In A Funky Place). It was included as the fourth track on the 5 November 1986 configuration of the album Camille (to be credited to Camille), but it was discarded when the Dream Factory and Camille albums evolved into the Crystal Ball triple-album. The same recording was used when included on the Partyman single in 1989 (on the Long Stroke version; the Short Stroke version is an edit), but credit was given solely to Prince, rather than the pseudonym Camille.

SHOCKADELICA

Yeah-yeah, oh
Yeah-yeah, oh
Look'it here
(The lights go out) the lights go out, the smell of doom
Is creepin' into your lonely room

The bed's on fire
Your fate is sealed
And you're so tired
And the reason is Camille-mille, Shockadelica
The girl must be a witch
She got your mind, body, and soul hitched, Shockadelica
You need a second opinion but she never wears a stitch
So you can't take her home

She got you tied with a golden rope
She won't let you play your guitar
And when you've cried enough
Maybe she'll let you up
For a nasty ride in her shockadeli-car
She'll make you beg (please) girl
Shockadelica, got you in a trance
'Cause when this woman say dance you dance, Shockadelica
You need a second opinion but you just can't leave her alone
With her you got no mind of your own
Shockadelica
Shockadelica
Doo-bee-doo-bee, yeah, Shockadelica
Shockadelica
Doo-bee-doo-bee, Shockadelica

The lights go out, the smell of doom
Again is creepin' into your lonely room

Is this a dream or is this real (or is this real)
Or is this just a mirage you feel, Shockadelica
Shockadelica
Shockadelica, she must be a witch

She got your mind, body, and soul hitched, Shockadelica
You need a second opinion
She never wears a stitch
You can't take her home, Shockadelica

She got you in a trance
When this girl say dance, baby, baby, baby, you dance (Shockadelica)
You dance, you dance, you dance, you dance, you, oh!

Shockadelica (she must be a witch, yeah)
Shockadelica, doo-bee-doo-bee (she got my mind, body, and soul hitched)
Shockadelica (I need a second, I need a second opinion)
Shockadelica, doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-bee (I just can't leave her alone)

Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-bee
The lights go out, the smell of doom
Again is creeping into your lonely room (is this a dream?)
Is this a dream
Or is this real
(Or is it just a mirage?) or is this just a mirage you feel?
(Is this just a mirage?) (or is it just a mirage?)
(Is this just a mirage?) (or is it just a mirage?) (Shockadelica)
(Is this just a mirage?) (or is it just a mirage?)
(Or is this just a mirage?) (or is it just a mirage?)

Basic tracking took place on 16 September 1986 at Prince's Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (two days after Coco Boys) after hearing that Jesse Johnson's forthcoming album was titled Shockadelica but had no title track.

Prince felt that every album with a great title should contain a title track, but it seems that the song was not intended for Jesse Johnson, and was instead more of a joke to give the impression that Jesse Johnson stole the title from Prince.

Prince sent the finished song to Jesse Johnson on an audio cassette.

The track was premiered on Minneapolis radio station KMOJ a couple of days after it was recorded (a few weeks before Jesse Johnson's album was released).

The song was included as the fifth track on the aborted Camille album (credited to the pseudonym Camille), and Shockadelica was intended as a single to be released around the same time as the album.

The Camille album reminds me of a better version of the Black Album, to be honest.

Both were side projects that had eight songs, took a 'more funky' tone and planned to be released under a different alias.

Still, I'm glad Camille was absorbed into SOTT, as it wouldn't be the same without these tracks.

What was that?

© A&M Records

The followup to Jesse Johnson’s Revue, 1986’s Shockadelica, carried on the inevitable comparisons to Prince–though this time through no fault of Johnson’s own. The story goes that Prince, after hearing the name for Jesse’s new album, tried to convince him to write a title track–then, when Jesse declined, went ahead and wrote it himself, leaking it to Minneapolis radio so listeners would assume he’d come up with the title first. It’s unfortunate, because Shockadelica shows a lot of musical growth for Johnson: plucking Sly Stone out of his self-imposed obscurity for the lead single “Crazay” and incorporating prominent freestyle influences on “Baby Let’s Kiss.” But on some level, at least, Johnson also got the last laugh: his “Do Yourself a Favor” nicks Prince’s unreleased arrangement of “If You See Me” by Minneapolis Sound godfather Pepé Willie, but credits Willie alone, ensuring he got all the royalties.

Baby, in the heat of the night
You know what to do
Good love, you got a,
Cherry pie, apple kisses
Everything is cool

Technicolor children in Picadilly Square
Whisper words, erotica, when you kiss me there
Gustav Mahler number three is jamming on the box
I'll have another glass of you, this time on the rocks

Forth of July in every stroke
A symphony of light and sound
Oh, I want to die from all the smoke
Fire breaks out when you're around

Good love, you got a, yeah

Good love, you got a, yeah

On reflection of this amazing era, I can see Prince was on a high-speed creative juggernaut that rammed on its breaks for...erm... Batman!

If Prince hadn't made this monumental creative mistake - the biggest of his career - 1986 to 1989 could have seen a gradual rollout of some of Prince's greatest work - whether that be Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, Camille and other such configurations.

Without doubt Sign Of The Times is a great compilation album, but I would have rather seen the original concept albums released. It's a shame that whoever was making decisions at Warner Bros just wasn't aware of what they had.

This era could have been so different and so much more spectacular, but instead we marvel in what could have been.

lol lol

As much as I agree Prince missed a huge opportunity in the late 80s, recording a gold mine of wonderful songs in 1986 alone, I don't think rolling out alternate SOTT configurations would work.

_

Dream Factory was intended to be the fourth 'Prince and The Revolution album, but the band split up during recording. This meant tracks containing the Revolution's input would have to be reworked or replaced if the album were to be released, thereby eliminating most of the non-SOTT content from the album - so it wouldn't yield much new material.

The latest configurations of Dream Factory already pointed in this direction, as within a month, most of the stronger unreleased songs on Dream Factory (In A Large Room With No Light, Power Fantastic, etc) were replaced by material that would find its way onto SOTT regardless.

_

Crystal Ball is another dead end. It's very similar to SOTT, but longer - featuring only 6 songs that were not present on SOTT. In my opinion, some of those extra songs were filler which disrupted the album's flow a little. As well as this, I personally consider Sign 'O The Times is a much better song to open the album with than Rebirth Of The Flesh, so the song sequencing on Crystal Ball was perhaps another weakness. With all being said, I wouldn't say Crystal Ball was different enough or substantially better than SOTT to warrant its own relase.

_

And to go back on topic, the Camille album was an interesing case. While it's a very streamlined package, I would still argue most of its songs sound more impactful on a more varied record like Sign 'O The Times. For example, If I Was Your Girlfriend is sequenced directly after the radio friendly U Got The Look on the SOTT album - which makes the former pack more emotional punch as a result. The Camille album sequences the same song after the already effeminate-sounding Good Love, making the difference in sound less apparent. Remember, half the songs on Camille made it onto SOTT anyway - and further two became B-sides in the 80s... so again there's not much leftover unreleased content to go by.

_

Phew, that was a lot of text. lol

There's still many albums worth of unreleased SOTT-era tracks, either way. I thought Lovesexy and Batman were a step down from this level of quality (at least we got those awesome aftershows). All in all, I just consider these previous SOTT configurations to overlap with the final album too much to make sense as an official release, though they still contain some superb unreleased tracks.

What was that?

Aftershock!

But if the band didn't split that June 1986 configuration would have been wonderful, along with a release of a Camille album

1987 would have been a wonderful year in purple music culture

I think that would have helped Prince traverse the coming change in scene in the 90s

But if the band didn't split that June 1986 configuration would have been wonderful, along with a release of a Camille album

1987 would have been a wonderful year in purple music culture

I think that would have helped Prince traverse the coming change in scene in the 90s

I was thinking that too but, if only Dream Factory (June 1986) and Camille were released, you'd still be missing:

Sign O' The Times, Play In The Sunshine, Slow Love, Hot Thing, Forever In My Life, U Got The Look, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, The Cross, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night and Adore.

1987 wouldn't be the same without those songs, especially considering three of them became hit singles for Prince. confused

What was that?

If this happened maybe the future would have been altered and the Cross would not have become the Christ lol

.

Yes, but think maybe as B sides: I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, The Cross, Sign O the Times or some released with a protege group -the Cocoa Boys probably would have happened if this continued as is ...

.

I could have done without Slow Love. It could also have been released as a one off song with the lady Carol.

.

Play In the Sunshine (Camille B side alter the voice or released as a DF B side) U Got the Look (Camille B side)

.

That is a strong album set list/cohesive

The alternate universe where SOTT becomes a protege group song might be worse than the one where The Cross becomes The Christ. lol I agree this was still a huge missed opportunity though.

It's still a good thing that SOTT, Slow Love, ICNTTOYM and The Cross were recorded before Camille - so Prince could still release them in a later album if he wanted to.

Slow Love isn't as essential as the other three songs as you said, but I loved the live versions of that song, so I'd rather keep it than lose it.

Also if Dream Factory and Camille were both released, we'd get Strange Relationship on both albums, I'm aware both versions are slightly different - but it would be an odd move.
_
Even if the remaining songs were released as B-sides, we'd lose out on the whole journey of the SOTT album and perhaps Prince's best tour to date.
_
Maybe things would be better if Prince toured SOTT in the USA, gave up on directing Graffiti Bridge and released the 88/89 Rave album afterwards instead.
Heck, it would help if Prince later released some of the songs from the setlist you posted. The world needs to hear more of In A Large Room With No Light and Power Fantastic.
And we're back where we're started... any ideas for potential Camille/Dream Factory singles?

Colors

Sign 'O' The Times would've been even stronger if Prince hadn't cut songs like Shockadelica, Rockhard In A Funky Place and Rebirth Of The Flesh. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night could've easily been replaced by one of those songs if u ask me.
