Got to Be Something Here The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/got-to-be-something-here ---
This book is about the music scence that Prince came out of and I think it will give us a good back story. I am going to order the book and wanted to know if anyone would like to do a book club on it.
The story, from start to superstardom, of the musicians who shaped the Minneapolis Sound Beginning in the year of Prince’s birth, 1958, with the recording of Minnesota’s first R&B record by a North Minneapolis band called the Big Ms, Got to Be Something Here traces the rise of that distinctive sound through two generations of political upheaval, rebellion, and artistic passion. Got to Be Something Here nails the atmosphere that I grew up in. Clubs, policies, and things that didn’t make sense back then, after reading this book make all the sense in the world. I think anyone who wants to understand musicians who hailed from North Minneapolis needs to read it. There are answers in these pages. —

Just read the entire thing. This is very well written and researched. She does get a few things wrong in the Prince timeline, but I'm nitpicking. Recommended. | |

It's detailed and not a quick read. Yeah there are a couple of small details wrong but they do not affect the totality. It's not a quick read. It took me five evenings, because I kept going back and checking names. . Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me. |
