Filming "Sign o' The Times"...The reason the movie was put on film was, because, when Prince first exposed the new band, a lot of people in Europe held up signs that said "Where are Wendy and Lisa?" and "Where is The Revolution?" They did, they really did.

Thx for posting this. I never knew about the audience's hostility to the new band (how sad) nor about the thunderstorm. Do you know which show that was? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

^That was in Holland. The outdoor shows in Utrecht were plagued by bad wheather. As a result of this, the outdoor shows in England were canceled and Prince decided to do some extra gigs in the Ahoy Hall in Rotterdam, where the film was made.
I wasn't there myself, but I've heard and read nothing but positive reactions to those shows. Who knows, maybe somebody did hang up a sign like she says, but if so, they certainly weren't speaking for everybody.

Cool, thx. This explains why the tour never hit UK, something I had always found puzzling given that Prince was always able to sold out quite a number of shows in London. I see on Pvault that this is the 06/21 show in Utrecht. Is there an audience recording or video of that Utrecht show in circulation? Oh yeah, there's recordings of all of those shows.

How do you see the storyline of this film?
We have Cat and her lover Gregory Brooks who is the not so good boyfriend, and Prince who takes the spot as the 'object of affect' or even rescuer 2 Cat
After he removed Gregory in 1988 Miko Weaver sorta filled the role..
But for SOTT what do you see as the storyline for the movie/musical?

Underated, I wish the SOTT tour would have been worldwide. The film, while excellent, does not capture the true concert.

Trivia: The last panoramic shot of the crowd, at the very end of IGBABN, is neither Rotterdam, nor Antwerp.

I can only remember raving reviews of this tour in Dutch media, right from the start in Sweden, but of course also for the shows in 'de Galgenwaard' in Utrecht. The audience was in it form madhouse on, and certainly fro that magic moment when smoke came from behind the curtain and Prince, behind it, started the guitarsolo to get us into SOTT (the song).

Such a great film. I was in college when it came out, and my friend (who died a few years later) and I were the only ones in the theater when we saw it. Good for us, bad for commercial success. It would be great to see in the theater again. They should do a limited-event showing for its 30th anniversary (like the kind of showing that Fathom Events does in theaters). It's probably too late to get that ball rolling now.

In my opinion, one of Prince's biggest career mistakes is not doing a SOTT worldwide tour.In the fall of 1987 (when "U Got The Look" was high on the charts),the momentum around this album was really high. That would have been a perfect time to launch a US tour.

I think the fear of the fame of the purple rain affected Prince in some major decisions of his career
