Of course he did. No one delivers top quality for almost 40 years in a row. There's always ups and downs. That's life. We just have our differences of opinion as to what is weak and what is strong.
Prince made many excellent and very good albums, some good and never any average albums as there would always be something quirky/ leftfield/ out-of-the-norm by him. A weak album? No, he never made one of those, unless you follow the muso's herd and regard such albums as Chaos & Disorder and 20TEN as poor. Which they ain't. Far from it. Prince was an exceptional artist, the greatest of all time.

Course he did - Prince may have spoken of a dark night of the soul before the Black Album turnaround but mine was the night I got home from work and the phone was ringing constantly about the cease and desist from all the flak he was getting for NewPowerSoul - THAT is a weak album. Some great songs but a weak album.

Oh, flashbacks!

There's a block of songs on there that are simply fantastic - Illusion Coma Pimp and Circumstance, then What Do U Want Me 2 Do?, The Marrying Kind and If I Was The Man In Ur Life...that 1-2-3 combination is terrific.

Not my cup of tea, they're all a bit average to my ear. Each to their own of course though! Off Musicology i like On the Couch a fair bit as well. [Edited 10/2/17 13:27pm]

Each to their own, of course. I like the melody of What do you want...it reminds me of the soundtrack to Gregory's Girl (the finest film ever made), the other two hit the right note for me....and see, On The Couch...not so much. Prince: music for all people!

I do hope stuff I dont like now I'll start to like as I get older, closer to his age when he made them, its happened before...

Time - Art Official Age

I just don't get the love for this album, this is the only track I'm interested in.

Sticky Like Glue. While I don't dislike 20Ten, that album doesn't really have a lot of staying power for me. However, Sticky is one of those jams that I have continuously returned to. It might be a top 10 most listened to song for me when its all said and done.

I am glad someone else likes it as much as i do. I think its one of those songs that would get even more credit had it been released among his 80's albums.

What are some of your favourite songs on records you don't love as a whole? I am not suggesting that these albums are poor but i am not that inclined to listen to them in their entirety very often. Nonetheless, they contain some of my favourite songs. Some of mine would be:

"I'm Yours"

"When the lights go down"

"When eye lay my hands on you"

"Zanalee"

"Sticky Like Glue"

"Joy in Repitition"

For You is wonderful.. love

Why do u consider this debut a weak album is beyond me. confuse

Take another listen IMHO... wink

I no I disagree with u... disbelief

AOA, wow this is a beauty of a Prince album, imo... 9/10

This thread proves so many different tastes among us, right..

It is interesting that you mention the age thing. I have been aware that I can listen endlessly to the piano and mic tour boots and to a lesser extent to the HnR2 and AOA albums, whereas some of the earlier stuff I mainly enjoy only when I feel energectic or upbeat. I concluded that given that I am Prince's age, some of his newer stuff just matches my termperament better than his louder and more youthful stuff. I love both, but I rarely would ever play something like the Controversy album on the morning commute or after an exhausting work day. It is just too intense for me at that moment. P & M goes down smoothly at all hours! So, yes Jaawnn, this may happen to you too.

I will listen to it again soon, i thought it was weak compared to his 80's records. I started with PR and Sign and then listened to the rest of his 80's work when i first got into Prince years ago. Then i moved onto the 2 70's albums, this may have led me to believe this is a weak record. I will listen to it again. smile
