Thanks for posting this.

Previous magazines in this series have been quite good quality. There will probably be nothing new information wise but it'll be nice to have.

Do you have it in green?

Bought it today. It's ok, don't expect the earth. £8.99 a bit steep for 120 odd pages.

Nice wee collectable though.

Some of the reviews in it are laughable. They rate each song on each album but some of the scores given are crazy. 2 stars out of 5 for Darling Nikki????

2/5 for Darling Nikki??? Oh my god, I can only imagine how they will review his later work (especially once he dissolved the Revolution). Why even do a whole magazine dedicated to him if they don't like the man's most famous music. Let me guess--$$$$$$

Revelation also scored a 2. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions but those are two of my favourite Prince songs. It seems like they grade them on how popular they are or how much they sold. A lot of the singles score high, Raspberry Beret gets a 5, whereas album tracks and lesser known songs get 2 and I've even seen a few get 1. Like, seriously, a 1 out of 5 for Dear Mr Man. 1 out of 5 is "Crazy Frog" territory, there's no way you could score a Prince song that low. Unless it's Purple and Gold. smile

To be honest I initially thought Darling Nikki was a throwaway song, put on PR purely for the shock value and because it would've resulted in more attention. It has since grown on me though.

So, non-singles received low scores consistently? Well, that's typical lazy criticism (and maybe the result of charging through his catalogue too quickly) Their description of the article online was misleading. They stated that there were some hidden masterpieces. It doesn't sound like they found any. Revelation was a two--WTF? They must have hated Hit and Run Volume II if Revelation scored that low. After all, he didn' really release many singles from that album.

Was this one reviewer or did each song get more than one?

I'm not sure if it's the same person reviewing everything. I've only leafed through it so far and looked at Tue scores attached to each song. There's a few songs which score higher than I thought. The Truth album has a few decent reviews on it. Overall though, it seems like they got the wrong person/people to review Prince's career. If you're just getting into Prince's music and you're unsure what albums to seek out and you buy this magazine for reference, you're going to see the likes of Dirty Mind and Controversy get middling reviews and avoid them off the back of it.

Damn, that sucks. I was hoping finally someone would take all his music seriously. Were there any hidden masterpieces or particulary strong reviews that you were surprised about? HOw did Hit and Run II and AOA fare overall?

The songs on Phase One got mostly 2 stars, there were a couple of 3s and June got a 4. Phase Two fared slightly better. Mostly 3s or 4s with the exception of Baltimore, which got 5 and Revelation, which got 2.

Not all of the reviews are negative, for example Don't Play Me and Black Sweat received 5 stars. But even though I like both of those, I can't see them as being 5 star songs if Darling Nikki is a 2 star song. I don't agree with a lot of the reviews and I think some of them could be very off putting for a potential Prince fan but it's still a worthwhile read, I suppose. It's good to hear other people's opinions from time to time, especially when they differ from your own.

That's not too bad but I agree that shockingly low reviews don't help because new potential fans may not understand that a 2 star review for a Prince song is due to the critic comparing his songs to one another rather than everyone else.

I can't say I understand how low the reviews for Nikki and Revelation were. A couple theories...Nikki might have offended them and it is kind of short. Revelation has a weird ending to it [which does kind of marr the song] and a light jazz feel at times (although that light jazz label is unfairly applied to anything soft and jazzy.) They should have used 1/2 stars or ratings of 1-10 to get the full range of the quality of his songs. I know none of the songs would get 1 out of 10.

As for Dear Mr. Man (yeah, I agree, very few songs baring Purple and Gold and some Prince rap songs deserve 1 or even 2 stars)--- I bet it was the confusing politics of the lyrics that is probably the biggest reason the critic disliked the song. Prince is bitching out the government (at times, even a liberal would agree with some of gripes) but then he tells people not to vote. That pissed a lot of critics off (that and the silly notion that you could write a letter??--I took that part as Prince being a bit sarcastic to further point out the uselessness of government to help the black community.) Its a defeatist attitude.

By the way, check out these Beatles reviews. I am a beatles fanatic and the shocking how nasty some of the comments are about some of their work. They literally called LEt it Be their blandest album...http://www.vulture.com/20...-best.html

It would be cool to get a book of reviews for all of his songs (limited release songs as well) with a half page per song (including background info, critical opinions and analysis).

something like this but for Prince but paper back like those movie review books (due to the number of songs P has)..
