I do know what you are talking about though. There are a few women who in various ways said that 'having sex with Prince was like having sex with a woman' and they didn't say that in a bad way.

That makes sense and is totally different to what I was responding to. I was addressing the comment about Prince being on HRT if he had been born later.

Yeah I know. Bodhittheblackdog will have to respond to that.

i dunno about this hrt shit, Prince seemed to enjoy being a man way more than he liked flirting with femininity. who knows, we weren't in his head, who'd have thought Bruce Jenner was really kaitlyn and lots of guys have done a move like that, or secretly dressed in panties and they seemed average guys.

I believe Prince loved women and everything aboput them, to the point of being totally at ease with his own sexuality and his own femininity.
Saying that most likely Prince would have had HRT had he been born later just showns some people still don't get him after all this time, imo.

I agree with this. The HRT idea for Prince seems unnecessarily speculative. If he was in some type of closet, that usually leads one to adopt opposite behaviors. Thus, Prince would have been dressed all macho like, which is sort of funny to even imagine. Furthermore, he didn't need HRT. Most people mistakenly think androgyny means a male being feminine, but that is just femininity. The true picture of androgyny is Prince. He was perfectly feminine AND perfectly masculine in the way he was. No need for enhancements.

Back to the topic of the OP, I think many Prince fans went through a period of disillusionment and even bitterness with the series of decisions he made in the late 90s and early 00s. I don't think this was just true for orgers. Many people, such as myself, just withdrew for awhile from Prince and his music as he became more difficult to relate to. It's the good old flight or fight response to conflict that we all have. Some chose the flight pattern and stopped investing their energy into him. The bitter reactions of some orgers just reflected the fight side.

But don't agree that Prince would have had HRT:Hormone replacement therapy.

He seemed to have a healthy natural expression of masculine and feminine.

He understood how to mix in various cultural and ethnic expressions just as easily.

I've been a True Funk Soldier for Prince. Approved many of his moves and been entertained by even more of them. I've understood that there would be hits and misses in his broad manner of musical expeditions and ventures, so I've never been very harsly critical of the guy's creativity and pursuits--it was all good to me overall, unlike some of the "gripers" who would contest to Prince's "going off the rails" or "underachivement of potential." People will do what they do. If you are not a direct recipient of the effects of what he has done (as a fan you are merely gifted with an experince--affected by a performance) and don't like what you see or hear then simply walk in another direction. He had big pull on some of us, though, who could not see that through. The guy had a lot of interests and pursuits not unlike like the rest of us. He'd been selfish, same as the rest of us, but he was also very giving, as we contnually see more evidence of today. So I dig his career path and acheivements. shrug

>

I feel that Prince had expressed himself well enough as a human being living through the human condition particularly through his songwriting. His feeling--aligning with the knowledge of anthhropology and the manifestation of the scientific field of genetics--was that we are all one people. He was more comfortable with his sexuality than some would be and pushed various facets (I can't say how far astrology really goes in the definition of this, ie. a Gemini etc. personality) of this in performance to impress the psychosociology upon our consciousness and sell his musical talent. He did very well in that regard, given the current turn of this thread's topic! If he were just the regular guy on the street, many of us would not even give a fuq--he'd simply be labeled an odd troublemaker! lol

>

For a long time he seemed to be open to expressions of spirituality beyond his traditional Judeo-Christianity. Personal tragedy brought him back to more religious conservatism, but there you go, he was just another someone looking for comfort here on Earth.

>

As far as Prince's "dating" preferenes are concerned, I'd say that he took them where he wished, the reason being because he could. He was pursuasive as a rich rock star, not bad-looking in women's eyes, who attracted all types of them like mayflies to the lamppost. He was intelligent and of high humor--a big plus. All humans crave uniqueness in our partners as well as a semblance of self-identification. He went for types that suited his desire for that special blend of uniqueness and identity, and they likewise went for him. I don't think there's anything bent about it in as far as humanity is concerned, but those wishing to make different sociolocial interpretations of it may certainly do so.

At his core, he was deeply female. Because of the era in which he was born, his race and religious background, I don't believe he was ever able to live a completely authentic life. His blood family, the church, the black community and his fans/fams wanted him to be 'their' Prince, they wouldn't let him be his own Prince.

Had he been born 20 years later, I believe he may have been on HRT, lived his true destiny, no one would have cared, his cultural impact would have been far greater and he would have been a happier individual, more tolerant of others, less manic about control....because he would have had the ultimate control: the control to be who he was. And he would have had the balm of being able to love and accept who he really was.

And I think he would have lived to a ripe old age. RIP.

Or how things get so off topic. I’m not sure what Prince’s sexuality has to do with the original topic. Help me out here.

Help? Well, you've got people here talking about subjects that other people would talk shJt about Prince going on, ie. "Prince don't like dark-skinned honeys"; "Prince is trannsexual". Would you rather people straight-up reminiscence about all the nasty comments people have said all over again, and why? Anyway, some of those folks have already started chiming in too, so maybe you can feel a little gratification . lol

It ain't that complicated.

Prince was a demanding artist, he got demanding fans.

As for the ones who got trapped by his Bambi Eyes but got confused by Hollywood,
They pretty much don't care for music, do they.

So why even having a conversation about them is beyond me.

As for me (notice how, in a very Prince style, I drag the spotlight on my skinny little white ass trash),
I never spared the rod, because he was my hero.
It was obvious he would mosey over.
He could possibly read my rants.

Somehow, someone knew better and posted one of my love letters to Skipper
right on the homepage, my little awkward elegy of Prince as a live musician.

I think by the end our rants paid off.
He was finally stripping himself of all the persona's bullshit.
Go with the afro, man! You could have dropped the mascara
and showed me every single one of your well-earned wrinkles
I wouldn't have loved U a single drop less.

But I digress.

Let's move the spotlight on an orger such as Bart.
Did he ever insulted or physically hurt Prince?
I doubt it. Here's a kind of love that burst out in precision mixed with arrogance.
Basically your average SKipper's guitar solo.

There are some brilliant folks around here.
I guess when they do take a piss, they do it with brilliance,
or at least it's a sane wish, given the Man at hand here.

As for the ones who project their sexuality on Prince,
I hope they know what they're doing.
If Prince's lesson was "know thyself by exploring thyself",
they will have a hard time finding themselves
in the experience of a different human being.

Don't use Prince as an alibi for your sexual or life choices.
Don't use Prince as your personal Wailing Wall,
Don't use Prince as a political tool, he's been there already, thank you very much.

Oh, Bart said plenty of hurtful and insulting things about Prince. I can't be bothered to scan old thread to find them, but in Dutch,we have a saying: "wat men liefheeft, kastijdt men." Which means: what you love, you hurt.
Strange Relationship indeed...

In France it goes "Qui aime bien châtie bien", which shares the same phrase construction.
Litterally: "He who truly loves, truly hurts",
which I think translates into "Spare the rod, spoil the child" (but I don't get the exact same meaning from this one).
I personnaly never thought of Prince as "spoiled".

Because I always thought Prince was SO great that I knew he was capable of delivering better stuff (IMO) than he was releasing. But I never hated him. Only felt bored.

And no one should feel bad or shamed for not liking an album or period. This is (or was) a site of sometimes brutal honesty. Maybe that's why Prince came here.

Many people would attack the likes of Bart or VainAndy, for being 'stuck in the past', but there is no rule that you must like new material to remain a fan and those accused probably have more Prince knowledge in their little finger than the people accusing them.

There is a danger the crazies want to whitewash Prince's weaker material and 'call out' those that don't agree with them. The reality is, they weren't here is the more difficult years and they probably don't own all of the discography.

Everything is in context of the period, and not the nostalgic glasses it can be view through now.

They highlighted a particular scene in UTCM and discussed how black woman may have found it hurtful, so it has obviously been part of the critical discourse surrounding Prince for a long time. Spike Lee was a member of the panel if I recall.

Vernon Reid was the one who brought that dumb shit up about the old black woman in utcm that Chris runs away from. He completely forgot about the black woman in THE OPENING of the film who's hand Christopher kisses and then buys an entire flower shop for.
People see what they want to see.

They always see what they want. Vernon Reid had on filtered glasses.

I suspect the woman at the end might have been a part of a deleted scene, because he seems to know her. This scene lasted longer and made complete scenes in the flow of the story, whereas most of the ending scenes didn't.

They forget about all the people of colour throught the movie:
