I love Tom as a personality, and have a lot of respect for his experience and the way in which he conducts himself, but he's always been a cabaret singer... not really a singer to take seriously, or ever actually listen to... He's a novelty singer, really.

As for his version of Kiss, it's as awful as should be expected. Overblown, drab and sexless. Embarrassing really. And has dated horribly. Like your drunk great uncle triying to get FUNKAY after Christmas dinner, in front of the whole family.

As for Art Of Noise.... well, for me, you can take away the Art Of and see what you're left with....

Tom Jones isn't a novelty, though he's marketed himself that way and it's easy to see why he's seen that way.

The man is one of the greatest singers ever. Period. Sick range, tone, sustain and control in his prime.

His cover of "Kiss" is cool. He adds his own charisma to it and it works.

It is cool for people who would not know soul if it feel from the heavens and hit them in the head. I also dig Tom Jones and just think the production sucks.

I love The Art of Noise, one of my favourite bands ever, and I'd like to hear an instrumental version of their Kiss. I saw Tom Jones live at a festival a couple of years ago and he did Kiss. It was awful.

I like Art of Noise... and I like Tom Jones, but their version of Kiss doesn't do it for me.

I do remember Tom on The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross covering it, i think with the house band (Steve Nieve and The Playboys) and that was decent enough...

I once had to do to the doctor because I couldn't stop singing Tom Jones songs....he told me not to worry, it's not unusual...

I fucking love it. I think it's one of the more inventive and different covers of a Prince song. Most covers either stick to the original or go so far off center that it's unrecognizable and crap. "Kiss" falls somewhere in the middle. The Art of Noise sound is obvious on it. The horn punches are fun.

Our band does the Tom Jones cover of that song. For listening, I prefer the Prince version by a mile. But unless you are actually Prince, no one can cop that song in his version. The closest we could get was to do the Tom Jones cover.

there are many versions of Kiss. Ik really like Herman van Veen's version, for instance. The Art Of Noise/Tom Jones version I like because it really rips the song apart and builds it up differently. The contrast to the Prince version with Tom's deep heavy vocals compared to Prince's falsetto and the industrial version of the music compared to Prince's guitar...

.

For me it beats covers that play it safe <cough>Sheila E.'s new album</cough>

If I remember correctly Prince made noise about people should be doing their own tunes (I don’t think he ever mentioned Maroon 5 specifically) and they ended up removing the song from whatever album it was on. Foo Fighters doing Darling Nikki with CeeLo Green is equally painful.

I like rockabilly so Maroon 5's version doesn't bother me. It's actually so different from Prince' s version that I almost forget it's the same song. However, for as much Elvis that Prince often sneaked into his sets, I'm surprised he had a problem with Maroon 5's version. Can the man who covered "Jailhouse Rock" and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" really have a problem with Maroon 5's version?
