At the beginning of his presidency. Reagan in some ways was less conservative than some of the douchebags we deal with now. Listen to his stances on immigration (he and George Sr.) which were much more humane and fair. Obviously he was more reasonable about gun control as well because of the laws passed right after someone attempted to assasinate him. And he did eventually talk to the Russians..LOL> I am no Reagan fan when it comes to trickle down economics, his stances on AIDS and his aligning himself with the religious right and the McCarthyists--don't get me wrong. I am moderate democrat myself. But you take the good with the bad.

As for later in life, Prince also supported Black LIves Matter, gun control (Baltimore's lyrics) green causes, and the presidency of a female. He also started to show more religious tolerance for Islam and other religions in songs like Same Page Different Book" and was on good terms with W and L at the end of his life (he Even told Wendy that her child through the articifical semination of her wife should call him Uncle Princey and once invited a gay photographer friend of his on stage in 2011 --the dude kissed his husband up there] I saw the clip). So his stances on gay marriage were either not important enough to him to keep driving home a point or he had a more complicated and evolving view of the issues.

Prince thought for himself and evolved and changed throughout his life. He is allowed to change his mind. A one time in interest in ALex JOnes doesn't mean he supported the douche bag after he went especially off the rails about Sandy Hook. Remember Prince was also a fan of the Bill Maher show and stated this fact in 1999 and later on in the later 2000's. Obviously, he didn't agree with Maher's views on religions.

He was purple not blue or red. Prince also stated that Obama was a good man and doing the best he could (even while not 'having a dog in the race') . He even tweeted about being proud of Obama after performing in that private event at the white house. the only white house performance he ever did.

Prince never really did an overt I ENDORSE THIS CANDIDATE exercise his whole career. He did, however, publically praise a very conservative American president.

He had a very conservative religiosity too, especially later in his life.

I don't think he was a big voter, frankly, but I do think he was naturally surprisingly

conservative in his outlook on life.

Especially for a musician and as a black man.

A couple important points...

1.) It wasn't 85. It was early 81.. Hindsight and all that. Party up was a song against the draft, was it not? the draft was issued under Jimmy Carter. (thus the reason he said a year later ""I just think the people should have a little more to say in some of these foreign matters. I don't want to have to go out and die for their mistakes." The draft didn't mean anything (it was a bluff) but probably pissed ofF a lot of people.

2.) If people said that Prince was misquoted, he probably was. Remember Reagan was a popular president.

3.) The line about mules not being less powerful than elephants is important.

4.) Prince was probably always purple (and never red or blue).Way to idiosyncratic. Conservative in some ways, progressive in other ways. Changing and altering his mind. Think about it. Prince in many ways was more conservative in the mid 2000's. But he was also no warhawk during that period. Aggressive military action and hardcore patriotism would not have suited him in 2004. His faith was pasicism and so seemingly did he.

5.) Supporting one republican candidate does not make him a hardcore republican.

6.) America is not just an anti-commie song, it is also anti-poverty and economic inequality...(Like I said, not red or blue.) Think about the book 1984. (the book against both communism and fascism by a man who was a democratic socialist.)

7.) Prince saying "Just for the power he represents, if nothing else" and "His mouth is his one big asset" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. It sounds like Prince disliked most politicans (both parties) and was more interested in issues that concerned him at the time. He was pissed at Carter for the draft and what many people deemed to be the mishandling of the hostage crisis.

Jump forward to 2014, prince is supporting green issues, Black Lives matters and starting a girl band.. So he starts hanging with Van Jones, and discussing in interviews the merits of a female president, and playing at Obama's white house.

Good points, but the keywords in the Paisley Park lyrics are "Whoever said"...elephants are stronger than mules? He is denoucing the fake quote. There is no way Prince aligned himself with Ronald Reagan. Prince has never been overtly political in that way. It makes more sense that the ever obtuse Prince was critiquing the idea of strength and power ("balls") that Reagan supposedly represented. Ronnie Talk to Russia is about non-violent diplomatic resolutions. Prince ALWAYS touted peace over violence.

it was not a fake quote and plenty of people have come out and said he was way more politically conservative than many would think. At least at some point. He did seem to get a little more liberal in the later years.

In Annie Christan, he mocks the call for gun control when he says "kill John Lennon" and nothing but when the tried to kill Reagan all of a sudden they wanted gun control

yes, he seems to be saying that elephants are not necessarily stronger than mules but he sure was not saying mules were necessarily stronger.

He said Ameria was "straightforwardly patriotic." It was anti-communism, the line "but she's happy she's not in the red" is a double meaning... 1) not in debt 2) not living under communism

I do think maybe I got the gun laws wrong because I was thinking of the Brady Bill which apparently was passed years later. So, I will correct that in my original post. But I did watch Reagan once talk about immigration back in the day, and he wasn't too unreasonable. I know that "Star Wars" was big under Ronnie but of course there was some talking as well obviously.. and he chatted with China as well...LOL. He did have conservative stances on the economy (trickle down economics), didn't give a shit about AIDS for way too long (cuts to CDC), aligned himself with the religious right during his presidency and the McCarthyists back in the days before his presidency.

Other than the gun control stuff and oversimplifying his interactions with the Russians and China, what am I getting wrong about Reagan?

Prince's issue with "star wars" was that it is something we may need!

It is like the line from the movie "Broken Arrow" (which is a missing nuke i think) when (was it Nick Cage?) quips something like "I do not know what is worst that we have a broken arrow or that there is even a term for it".

Prince and any ANY rational person would want a defence system to hopefully stop nukes. And Prince would (as most would) have preferred a defence than an offence or retaliatory strike.

How is that mocking gun control? Its mocking selective gun control...only wanting it when a president gets mowed down but not when it happens to rock stars or even the black children he mentions she killed in the early part of the song.

.

I got the red reference...but he also stated that this woman is almost dead while working so hard for minimun rage and in one a room monkey cage...in the same song that he mentions aristocrats living on the mountain top, making money and losing time. I always took the song as meaning that eventually the overworked, underpaid lady happy to be not living in the red will no longer be so proud or happy to do so. I think he is saying keep Americans free (from communism in particular) by also making sure they are proud to live in a country that doesn't have the kind of economic disparity that pushes them to run to the other extreme of the political spectrum. The lines about "Jimmy Nothing never went to school/They made him pledge allegiance/He said it wasn't cool
Nothing made Jimmy proud..." is prince saying that Johnny was uneducated, and has no sense of pride in his country or himself but is forced to pledge allegience to a country he is unproud of.. (thus his lack of patriotism). Johnny's lack of hope, education or any money (assuming nothing is referring to money) makes it hard for him to care about his country. This reminds me of an old interview with Frank Sinatra I read (back when Sinatra was not conserative). They asked him what was the best way to fight communism. He said something about making sure the citizens aren't living in poverty in the first place because communism festers in those places.

Prince might be more moderate than you are making him out to be here. LIke I said about the book 1984, the writer was strongly against communism (which the right wing love about the book) but they ignore the book's anti-fascist statements and the fact that the writer was a democratic socialist who would have believed in the things like the FDR"s new deal. People who don't make distinctions between some democratic socialism and communism will oversimplify books like "1984".

i don't know much about politics honestly, but many people have said Reagan and that era was tragic for Black Americans. It's funny but none of the Reagan fanatics seem to remember how unpopular he was by the end of his term with the Ollie North stuff, whatever that was. Honestly, I've never in my lifetime seen a president who most of the people were happy with. LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush2,Obama, all of them had large factions of the american public who hated them, thought they should be impeached or voted out or whatever. I don't know much about politics though, i never voted and really don't care. The trump thing is unusual and had me interested for a bit but only as an observer not as a citizen, i'm enjoying how the coddled americans are expressing their hate of a guy who is really just like most of them at their worst, only more extreme. It's funny to me.

The 1980s were great, especially the early 80s, and Reagan was an awesome president! Prince was at his most awesome in the 80s as well, no matter what anybody says. Back then everything seemed possible, and I would gladly go back to those days if I could. Maybe, I should buy a hot tub time machine. Oh, and by the way, in the 1984 re-election, Reagan's 525 electoral votes (out of 538) is the highest total ever received by a presidential candidate, and that should tell you everything!

Most likely Prince hated you and other evil Republicans who are ruining the planet. Reagan took the solar panels off the White House that Carter had put up and reversed his Green energy push. Because he was evil, just like Trump.

Prince had a heart and obviously leaned towards Democratic ideals. He wasn't a mythical "liberal" though, because those don't exist, except in the minds of simpletons.

You're a perfect example of the little Marxist libtards I was talking about. Congratulations on being an idiot. I have a nice little safe space I can sell you to protect you from those evil Republicans if you're interested. It comes with rainbows, little fluffy pink bunnies, cotton candy clouds, and all the twinkies you can eat. It would be perfect for you.

.

p.s. Prince's only known political donation was to the Senate campaign of Republican Rudy Boschwitz, in 1990.

i remember reading an essay on the movie Pulp Fiction, in it the writer described the world of gays as being as foreign and unknown to the protagonists as anything. In that way, I think it's true, we are all naive in many ways just because our knowledge is so limited. So, Prince was politically naive as most people are in their early 20's. I see it now more that I'm older with the young people around today, god they are so fucking stupid and whiny.

He was naive in the things that you naturally are naive about if you don't go to a good college or don't get into a social peer group of intellects in your 20's. Things like politics, science, history, world culture. The lyrics and interviews prove it. He started to get a lot more informed (and sometimes misinformed with conspiracy theories or dogma as well) later on.

Things he was definitely not naive about: writing songd and making music, branding himself authentically, running his business, being creative as a way of life.
