Yes..It appeared that way...especially with her Saying that Prince didnt want anyone in the family talking to the press and then so goes in full throttle !

And John kind took credit, I would have LOVED him to heap a bit of Praise upon his son,

Instead..It felt to me like John was all about John..I.D.K

I got the feeling that John was disappointed that the focus wasn't on him. He kept playing the piano keys like he thought the sleazy interviewer would focus on that. What I got from the so-called interview that he was really disappointed with the way his musical life turned out and was envious of the attention on his son. Really sad. But not nearly as bad as Sharon.

I really hope these interview sound bites are taken a bit out of context. She called him short, perverted, spoiled, the prince of darkness...Geez. I read somewhere that Sharon did eventually apologize to P. She damn well should have. At best, she was being irresponsible and careless with her words in an attempt to be funny or get attention (much more so than a vague song by Prince ever was). At worst, she was being cruel and overly vindictive..

in all fairness, john nelson is probably where P got his musical talent and he sounded like a pretty good jazz/bebop player. Like many musicians, they think they are the best so I wouldn't doubt if he thought he was the real force behind prince-the chip off the old block so to speak.

sharon, on the other hand, she was hanging prince out to dry, i never heard of prince being called the prince of darkness and I don't know if she was telling the truth about the aluminum foil or not. She definitely was going in on him, probably trying to get a break herself, I read on here that she was a manager herself and she definitely seemed cutthroat enough for the business. Anyway, I don't know if anyone remembers that era well enough, hard copy, current affair and many others were a new beginning for media in that it was tabloid journalism made televisiion and amazingly, it had a profound effect on normal news and culture as a whole. the interviewers was baldly trying to get a rise out of john with some pretty nasty questions but they seemed to really go over the old man's head. I don't know if it was worth estranging his son over, i can't see where he did anything that bad. Prince was a fiend for secrecy though and took any little thing as a betrayal.

I didn't see It at all like that. His sister was trying to give the public a little trash on Prince, even if was made up. She got caught up into being Prince's sister and looked as if she liked it. The father on the other hand was proud of his sons accomplishments. He talked about Prince having his ears wide open and the only one hearing what was going on within the music he played. I thought he was a great piano player and wanted to show off some of his skills. You have to remember his dad is really from the south (Louisiana) He talked in a different way than Prince but I could tell he meant well. He made stripping sound like a real profession and tried to dignify the woman doing it. He kept them classy. When was the last time you seen a piano player in a strip club? Different times now, strippers are treated like prostitutes and it's the DJ that runs the show.

Ok, lemme see if I have this straight...Is this the sister that passed away?

If not, could this sister be behind the supposed "reality show" that's being discussed?

shit was kinda funny though, in that way that a family can fucking embarrass the fuck out of you. His dad fucking up purple rain while they insinuated that he wrote it had to have prince slinking on the floor. fuck, i'm watching it again and i'm reminded of how much of an ass Joe Jackson made of himself after Michael died, they were asking him about it, expecting him to be in grief and this asshole starts introducing his new group. Both of these guys are characters. i wanna slap the shit out of that interviewer. also, i was always curious about Johns music, i wonder if one could hear a similarity between his and Princes. i don't hear much in the playing there, John's playing a lot of single notes in the right hand whereas prince uses his right for harmony and sings on top of it.

I'd agree with you except I think he looks more like this sister than he does Tyka. Tyka looks more like their mother I think.

He has this sister's facial bone structure, no?

I get the feeling whenever I hear about this sister, or see Pepe Willy for that matter, that they still are hanging onto their dreams.

In Pepe's case, I think he's pretty satisfied with being "hood famous". I think he resents P a bit for not "taking me with him", but ultimately realized that he wasn't really gonna make it in Hollywood.

Sharon strikes me as wanting to have been the same way, wanting Hollwood but realizing that she'd never make it there so settling for "hood famous". I guess at this age she figures she might as well grab 15 minutes before it's 4/21 for her.

Prince was not adopted. One of the old Prince books by Jon Bream has Prince's birth certificate John and Mattie were his parents and he looks like them. I think he was just determined to pull himself up and do better than his family.

I think the older sibs probaly did not care for him and maybe Tyka because their dad did run off with Mattie leaving their mom to become a drunk. I would imagine that they never got over it and probaly took it out on the kids from the Mattie and John union.

This type of stuff sometimes happens in blended families.

In a lot of ways she said nothing fans didn't know or assume.

I mean Prince talked about seeing his father perform and where.
And he talked about the XXX magazines his mother would lay out for him in the home.

I viewed it the same way! I believe John Nelson came up hard just like my own grandfather did. He's 87 now and to the world you'd think he was a crabby old man never happy with the world or the cards he was dealt in life. But as a family we know him well enough to know that is not the case. I wanted to reach through my screen and give John a hug. John actually struck me as someone proud of what his son did. He's stated many times over that he always hoped Prince would go on to do what he never could do. Prince did that and did it well! My grandfather was not a musician but personality wise I could see John as my own surrogate grandfather cause he reminds me so much of my own grandfather.

I am sorry biggrin but I could actually many people thinking he picked up off a doorstep because some of the sibs are so off their rocker much more so than I think he was.

I actually do think Prince had problems but I think more and more it may have been due to his homelife not so much like the sibs who I think have real mental health issues.

Alfred - has been in a mental institution

Sharon - with her weird comments about Prince's body.

Lorna- and her lawsuit and some of her rantings

Duane - who also went into a mental health facility

Tkya- who use to walk around with a purple dinosaur called Jazz and actually talked to it.

John Jr -- rumors that he use to roam the streets as a homeless person.

John Sr - who neighbors said use to put all his trash in his car and take it to dump himself.

We do not know too much about Omarr or Norrine but something is up with this family.

Thank you for posting this! I did not know this stuff! Especially the purple dinosaur- WTF? eek I also did not know there was a John Jr. - never heard of him. And, I don't know if this is getting off topic but I've heard of Duane losing it but don't know the details- could you elaborate a bit on that Laura? or point me to the thread that talks about it? lol well. Someone families do lol, I grew up in a semi naked home.

But with that Purple Rain script where the mother was admiring 'Skipper' and his loins were moving IDK lol

But I mean more about the influence from the burlesque shows and such. That wasn't new.

I don't think it was that weird. For a family member to say someone has a nice build or a good boy or very good looking or such.

I think just in the mix of this whole 'interview' it makes it weird.

GOOD point. Sometimes the children become angry at the "new family".
For some reason, the sister had a HUGE resentment against prince. Or maybe he didn't pay his part of the phone bill when he lived with her or something. People can hold on to that stuff forever.
Whatever the reason, she was intent on causing him grief.

I thought the Dad did as well as he probably could've here for Prince. I mean, he sure took credit, but he wasn't cruel in any way.

I sure do see where Prince got some of his love for girls.

Well, I don't know P or any of P's family personally, but due in part to that specific song (Sister) it's been rumoured for decades that there may have been boundary issues with the immediate and extended family. I dunno cuz I wasn't there, but it does make one wonder after hearing Tyke's podcast interview where she mentions that she's from "a family of secrets".

There's definitely a very...interesting...dynamic between those folks.

eek confused sad
