It means add the note.

like "G (add A) means a G major chord (G B D) and also play an A so the chord is G-A-B-D.

In reality You might now play all 4 notes stacked that way, depends how you voice it (I play keyboards; not sure how you say this for guitar). For example you might only play a G, an A and D though technically that would be considered a Sus2 chord.

If you are asking what add a note means...you may wanna take a few lessons first.

I sorta felt that, but didn't want to make a dig. I wonder the level of music knowledge if someone doesn't know what "add A" means. I grew up learning violin and cello. One note at a time. I taught myself piano, and just sorta figured out the "add ___" or "add 2nd" sorta thing. Granted, not everyone does, but it seems obvious.

I remember figuring out "Purple Rain", then realizing there were other notes in those chords. There's practically an F or a G in every chord (or could be if you're generous). There is not normally a G in a Bb chord, or an F chord. I just played the 2nd or 7th here and there, then saw the sheet music. I was pretty close in most of it.
