Prince and Bryant Gumbel:...of "Today"

By Neal Justin | January 27, 2017 — 10:51am

It's not news that Bryant Gumbel and Prince had a strong bond. The rocker even popped by for the anchor's last day on "Today" in 1997, surprising his usually unflappable friend by dressing up like him and performing a special song in his honor.

mkj6fr.pngIt turns out it wasn't the only time Prince wrote music for Gumbel.

mkj6fr.pngIn a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gumbel reveals that the superstar, who died last year, once offered to compose the theme song for CBS's "Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel," the short-lived newsmagazine show that debuted in 1998.

mkj6fr.png"He took a run at it and I didn't like it," Gumbel told reporter Stephen Battalgio. "After three times I called it off. It was becoming embarassing -- a guy who can't read music can't tell Mozart, 'No this isn't good.' But I own three Prince songs that have never seen the light of day."

I just love your ongoing attempts at busting the org's server memory capacity lol

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...

What does that even mean? HaHaHaHaHa!

I just wanna say, forty: Your nonsensical sense of humor might be lost on most people on this site. But your indecipherable non sequiturs have always cracked me up.

Keep up the Zippy-esque hilarity dude

Today I learned that I play more instruments than Prince...

Prince's recreated Tamboracca for sale from Paisley Park

Prince could play at least 27 instruments. In the credit of his debut album For You, he’s listed as the musician for: All vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, Or bass, bass synth, singing bass, fuzz bass, Fender Rhodes electric piano, acoustic piano, Minimoog, Polymoog, ARP String Ensemble, ARP Pro Soloist, Oberheim 4-voice, clavinet, drums, syndrums, water drums, slapsticks, bongos, congas, finger cymbals, wind chimes, orchestral bells, wood blocks, brush trap, tree bell, hand claps, finger snaps

[Source: Fox 9/KMSP]

Aha! Do you see what he did there?

Just attributing the credits as "Prince: Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, and Percussion" would have covered all of the above "27 instruments". But of course, that would have made for yawn-inducing marketing copy.

If all musicians are allowed to couch our musical talents in those same terms, then I can truthfully say that I got Prince beat on the number of instruments that I can factually say that I "play"...

I remember the claims coming out about Prince when he was first becoming famous. This 27 instruments claim really caught people's attention.

Basically it boils down to variation of:

Guitar

Bass

Drums

Keyboards

How many instruments don't fall into one of those categories besides wind instruments?

If you accept "Guitar" to be a synonym for the more general category of "Strings". And if you accept "Drums" to be a synomym for the more general category of "Percussion", then every single instrument that I'm personally familiar with fits into one of only four "families of instruments"…

  1. Strings

  2. Percussion

  3. Woodwinds

  4. Brass

At least that's what I was taught.

In case you were wondering, "Butt Trumpet" is the windiest of all Wind Instruments ;د)

Would your "instrument" happen to fit into the family of instruments that the disco diva Anita Ward suggestively alluded to in her hit, "Ring My Bell"? Do tell!

I don't like to brag, but I have "beaten up" of few "bells" in my time ;د)
