A few of my co-workers have come to me with confused looks on their faces. For years I have praised Prince, after his death they are interested, now listening to the streams...and all asking me, "Why is the sound so low? i have to blast it!" I have told them, "I know, I know...the remasters are coming...hopefully."

I've noticed that, weirder still, the sound level varies on some albums. Sign o' the Times springs to mind.

FUNKNROLL

I'm hearing lots of 10 second (instrumental) snippets of Prince before commercial breaks on various TV news shows and on NPR radio. Yesterday it was "America". Always makes me smile, especially the album tracks. So there's that. smile

That sounds like alot, but how can we tell how P's back catalogue streaming is stacking up compared to other folks' music streaming during that same time period?

Overall, I've read he's #1 right now. I should have posted that article when I found it.

It's necessary to add it all together, not just analyze Spotify.

It's hard to compare one week of Prince availability with those who've been growing listeners for much longer.
The Chainsmokers and Sheeran will be replaced soon by others as short attention spans move on.
Sheeran is today's Christopher Cross.

The estate has probably realized a cool $100 in pure profit!

And lost nothing.

Lost opportunity, for pennies per stream. One potential use: they could put a down-payment on production costs for a new banner @ the Paisley Park Museum.

Ah, well. Gotta make those pennies count.

CNBC analysis is that streaming is a positive for Prince's estate -- and shows how it has benefited MJ's estate.

From the comparisons that I'm seeing in these articles, P's back catalogue is late to the party but it's following on Spotify is growing very well and quickly so if his following gets up around 5-10million he'll be in great shape as far as comparison to other music catalogues...but over 42million is Ed Sheeran territory which is the highest streaming catalogue...and if P gets to 50million he should be in bulletproof territory.

Ok. Got it.

Prince could get into Ed Sheeran territory, but only if every freaking song was the same freaking snooze fest as the one before...

Lost opportunity in what way? How is putting his music on streaming sites stopping them from doing anything else? 🤔

In real life, Ed has never been in Prince territory. Few have.

Um. No.

I meant on Spotify. For Spotify numbers to make sense to me I needed to figure out who P's catalogue needed to beat numberswise on Spotify..

I think I know an Ed Sheeran song and I think I saw him on a TV show once and he seemed pleasant, but other than that I really don't know much about him so I figure that if he has such a large following it's because he's popular right now. I also figure if P can get as many streams as Ed Sheeran has on Spotify it'll mean the same thing in terms of the Spotify streaming world.

See?

I wonder what the % is of those numbers from die-hards who already have th music in their libraries compared to new listeners

Because my feeds are full of Prince fans who are jazzed about being able to stream what they already have, again.

. http://www.cnbc.com/2017/...nyway.html . CNBC analysis is that streaming is a positive for Prince's estate -- and shows how it has benefited MJ's estate.

"An artist can net around $70,000 per 10,000,000 streams on Spotify," said Christian Barker, a Nashville-based entertainment attorney who specializes in musician royalties. He told CNBC that streaming is immensely profitable for pop artists.

"Michael Jackson has netted between $5 million and $10 million annually in streaming revenue alone since his death," he said.

*************************************************

According to the information from the article, artists are netting $0.007 per stream - not even one cent per stream.

If you average the two revenue numbers given for Michael Jackson, that gives you $7,500,000. In order to net that at $0.007 per stream, your stuff has to be streamed 1,071,428,571 times.

Prince's stuff was streamed 6,000,000 times in the first week it was released (netting the estate $42,000). You have to assume that's the most it's going to be streamed in any week, save and except possibly the week the "Purple Rain" box set is released. Let's assume that Prince streams 10,000,000 that week, but that the other 50 weeks average 1,500,000 streams.

Using the $0.007 rate shown above, the estate will net $637,000.

Prince was right. No artist ever got rich off streaming. And never will.

IMO I don't think Prince's music was put on streaming services with the expectation that the estate would make a ton of money off of it. The fact is there are very few big name artists not on streaming services. I don't see how keeping Prince's music off of it will help his legacy or having it on there is harming the estate. No one has yet shown what money the estate is losing by have his work on these services. The estate will get to decide what they put on there and what they don't. As I've mentioned before some artists like Adele keep new releases off streaming for a period of time; if you want it right away you have to buy it. Prince's estate could do the same with any new releases from the vault.
