Somewhere, there must be footage of the Friday rehearsal/runthrough.

Morris confirmed it was recorded as a backup in case they couldn't perform on the night.

Shelby J. just put up a video about this on FB. This was her first big gig with Prince. Prior to that she had just been doing 3121 gigs with the band.

Thanks for posting this rogifan!

Prince certainly chose wisely when he picked Shelby J. to perform at the legendary halftime show.

It's also great that in the video Shelby gave props to the rest of the amazing musicians of the New Power Generation that made history on that stage.

Shelby is a class act through and through. Yes Prince did know how to pick 'em.

This is intereresting because I swear I read a story from the producer who said rehearsals didn't go well at all and they didn't have tape to run in case something went wrong.

Yes, that is interesting.

Given that when The One U Wanna See video leaked a while back, Morris said he didn't even remember them making the video, possibly his recollection is unreliable.

It's also possible, that - similar to Kevin Smith running out of film - no-one was gonna tell Prince...

You remember correctly. The dress rehearsal was recorded as a backup but P was unhappy. The producer did say that the recording was destroyed/unavailable.
It's possible the band didn't know that detail.

P knew he could do as good or better. And he did.
Imagine IF they'd have used a tape instead of that totally epic performance.
No tricks. Just his stage and a sheet. AND THE RAIN. The little man was bravest of them all.
Real, live music.
