I have my own theory on those last comments...

But with regards to if they knew or not, I believe they did, it's almost as if there were lyrics to a song that could give us a clue...hmmm lol

This is how it's gonna b
If u wanna b with me
Ain't no room 4 disagree
1+1+1 is 3
.
Take ur time and think it thru
If this is what u wanna do
I ain't really that hard 2 please
Cuz 1+1+1 is 3

--Exactly, On one of the gossip blogs years ago a source side he would break it down to the women in that exact way.

Actually, being that 1+1+1 is 3 is from The Rainbow Children, I'm gonna go out a limb and say that the lyrics are referencing the Biblical scripture that talks about marraige being a "three fold cord", namely the two partners and G*d.

wink

That makes a lot of sense. I also think, if it's true that it was a response to the sense of worthlessness stemming from the abandonment, and that is never dealt with directly, then no amount of love/affection/desire being attached to him is ever going to do anything other than make it feel temporarily better, and he's going to have to keep doing it again and again and again. He can attract the desire of half the women on the planet, it still won't change the fact that his mother rejected him/let him leave/chose his stepfather over him/subjected him to a violent man. If standing on a stage night after night with the love of thousands of people being beamed at you doesn't do it, then the desire of however many women simultaneously won't. And if you feel ashamed and worthless, it will seem impossible to show people what is in your core, because you think they will be repulsed and leave you (which is what the Compuer Blue hallway speech is all about)...and so, even if you are a world class expert at attracting and trapping (like butterflies) women's desire (which he was), you still won't feel like you are loved for who you really are, that you have been truly seen, recognized and accepted.

Yes to all of this... nod

This makes me think of the song "Mama"...where He's singing about Butterflies and "What's this Strange..." and asking where is his father...The way he sings "Mama" is so mournful.... sad

Ha, yeah. I mentally shout at him all the time too. Particularly the 'put the spoon down' line in The Love We Make sad. And the bit in Empty Room where he's all 'why has she abandoned me?'...and I'm all 'BECAUSE YOU CHEATED ON HER DOOFUS.'

Sigh...this sure does resonate with how some are hearing a snippet of a version of Wally for the first time.

Yeah, I find it hard to listen to...especially where he gets to the bit where he starts asking where his dad is. But yes, the butterfly thing there always seemed a bit random, and maybe it's not so...and that also made me start thinking about the butterfly in New Girl that follows him around. P and his magic trained butterfly. The whole of the episode is kinda screaming out for analysis tbh... Oh P sad

It's just that Wally is the a song that expresses terrible pain over the loss of Susannah. My understanding is that they were deeply in love and that cheating, and the double standard about cheAting, harmed the relationship greatly. I think it reflects the wisdom of observations of the two of you and others. I really appreciate the discussion.

Ahh right, got you smile Yeah, I don't know anything more than the 'oh my malady' bit Susan has reported, and the crazy line about the glasses from the snippet, but yeah, the malady bit chimes with the 'what the hell is wrong with me' stuff in Computer Blue, totally. The more I think about it, the more its seems that him screwing things up with Susannah was a really important juncture...there was clearly a massive part of him that really didn't want to make a mess of it (and to confess my biases, I really rate Susannah, she is smart as a whip, incredibly astute, and talented, and seems very gentle, and very genuine, and he didn't (or she didn't let him) try and turn her into someone else to match some kind of fantasy of his...and she clearly loved him very very much, while not taking some of his bullshit...she was really a proper match for him I think, and his not marrying her was a major fuck up, and I think he knew it)...anyway, being P he just kept on rolling, but like I said upthread, I have a suspicion that that is when things started to unravel a bit...

If we knew what he and Susannah fought about it would help to understand him. She said she didn't like the way he made the band feel like the army in its work habits so he must have been a tyrant at times. Devin says he was seeing her during a break with Susannah but was it really a break, or was he seeing them both?

But that starfish and coffee story about the apple bobbing Susannah tells- that was a lie she used to sell shirts so her recollections are going to be a little suspect for me unfortunately. No one is going to tell the ugly truth about him because of the vicious backlash they would receive. And it's not right to talk ill of the dead.

I was married to an alcoholic sex addict who I suspect was bisexual (who is also dead) so talking about this stuff is okay with me.

Just for clarification - are you saying the apple bobbing bit is a lie specifically, and if so, can I ask why you think that. It's pretty well established that the story came from her (and she has a writer's credit on the song), so I'm a little confused.

Just the applebobbing thing is a lie I think. If you are capable enough to go by yourself to school, then you are capable enough not to stick your head in a toilet. The story was degrading to every human, disabled or not. Jmho

If he was really messing around with other women his entire life, I am surprised that we have not had a bunch of "my night..my week...my affair with prince" stories pop up,especially since his passing. You would think those stories would be worth some cash, and it is hard to believe that all of those many many many proported women would all be respecting his privacy, and that there were not some wanting to sell the stories?? Just does not make sense he could have been with so many women that at the very least did not want to brag about it. If you had been one of his women on the side, would you have kept it quiet for decades in some case?

I'm not sure anyone is claiming it was his whole life...but for at least a good 15 years (from early 80s till he married Mayte) there was a *lot* of multiples and overlapping...and that doesn't include anything more or less casual that we don't know about...

Okay, I'm not sure what I think about that, it didn't strike me that way when I heard it, but I see your point. I'm not sure however that S would lie because she stands to make so much money out of a few T-shirts and coffee mugs...but, as I said, I like S a lot, so when she says she's doing it because she wants to honor P's identification with kids with autism, I tend to believe her, especially given we know it was a cause he cared about, and there are thoughts that he was on the spectrum, and his support for the cause might not be unrelated to that...

how much would a story 'yes I slept with him and it was okay, nothing special' go for? Lol

You can watch some of his more explicit videos and guess his bedroom habits, which don't look all that out of the ordinary to me. Not that I wouldn't love to have memories of him, yum. But what if he had bad breath or was just human after all?

Yes I like her too and I think she just picked a story she thought would be cute and really would honor him etc, but she picked an offensive plot line out of ignorance probably.

I watched the Shameless Maya video where she says 'he was A LOT, I mean a LOT lot' and that intrigues me. I want specifics, I can handle it! And I don't think they were lovers, Tameron Hall either. Am I daft?

But his sexual metaphors were generally genius and I'm talking the purely sexual ones, not the ones that could possibly be religious also, although those were probably even more genius and I'm not educated enough to see that.

He was very, very uniquely created by God.

He also sang:

In a celibate rage
I want you alone in my dirty little cage
Can u understand, Martha?"

I'm still in the writing process, it's baby steps and I want to be really sure it's the right thing. So I can't say yet.

It's my understanding that Prince may have thought he wanted an open relationship with Susannah, but in the end, couldn't bear the idea of her straying. It's also my understanding that Susannah never wanted an open relationship, and was hurt by all of Prince's cheating.

I share your bias about Susannah, and I loved hearing her recent interviews on the Current, Questlove's show, etc. Prince was amazing and had many amazing people in his life. This is obvious even to an outsider. It's sad knowing that Prince and many others went through so much hurt, but also good to hear many of these people relate moments of joy, transcedence, and just plain old fun.

I really appreciate your interest in Prince's inner life, which must have been fascinating and wonderful, given his performances, his words, his music. What you wrote on the guitar solo thread really resonates.

Thank you also for calling my attention back to Computer Blue. Those lyrics...wow.
