I'll watch just cuz she might tell an interesting P fact but for some reason that I can't articulate, I've never cared for this particular woman. Dunno why but she strikes me as an opportunist. Just my perception.

confused wink cool

Please come back and give your opinion after viewing it, I'll be curious to hear if it's changed your mind on her. If it's interesting Prince facts and insights you're after then this is the interview for you.

First, I think when someone makes a mistake publicly it's important to fix that mistake just as publicly, so here I am, pride be damned.

For years I had heard Susan Rogers' name mentioned but didn't know more about her than she'd worked with P during some crucial creative period early in his career. That's it. I didn't feel one way or another about it. It simply was. Then one day I saw what was supposed to be a picture of her. Ok, whatever.

Someone who knows me well and that I respect questioned me privately about my earlier casual comment in this thread and together we discovered something very odd...The picture I saw that was supposedly Susan Rogers might indeed be a woman named Susan Rogers but it is most definitely NOT the woman in the video from this thread. The picture I originally saw accompanied an article about P and was of a 40-ish looking blonde woman with bangs and her hair away from her face, possibly pulled back in a ponytail (?) and very straight teeth, totally different from P's Susan Rogers. That was very surprising to me. I ended up seeing a picture of the Susan Rogers from this video and immediately got a different vibe from this woman. Completely different vibe...so I watched the video...3 times so far.

Secondly, I'm blown away by P's Susan Rogers. What an awesome time to both be young and learning alot of things about both artistry and technical stuff together during what must have been an incredibly creative period for them both. I could see how they could hit it off. And then, although she says she's "self-taught" and never graduated high school, to go on to college at 44 years old, for 8 damned years and earn a Phd, then become a scientist/professor in a music? Seriously?

One of my favorite things about her was, despite her meek appearance, she says "f*ck" conversationally and somehow it doesn't sound crude! Lol

Having said that, I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. This is definitely a "must see".

cool

What a wonderful interview and insight

It is great that these types of interviews are coming out as I think we are now starting to get a rounded picture of what Prince was actually like when recording - this interview coupled with the Scottie Baldwin, John Blackwell, Dave Hampton etc. - start to reveal some common themes

He was NOT a perfectionist - and embraced the fact that he had to "get songs done" so he could move on to the next one

He liked to recruit "local talent" or releative newcomers so he could mould them - I always thought Michael B and Sonny T were the "best in the business" at what they did but I heard they were local musicians to Prince

The work ethic on tour was insane! 4 hour soundcheck, 2.5hr gig and then at 1am an aftershow OR studio - this is not "new" news but it did bring it home that he was doing this most nights whilst on tour

Which leads me to wonder if Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Michaelangelo, Picasso, Renoir, etc...had similar creative/work ethics, but without the touring and modern technology/studio production elements...but because those talents were so long ago that we don't know that end of thier creativity. I'm not articulating this well, but since we lived during P's career and we hear these stories I wonder about the people living during those artists of long ago since we only hear about them as history...like someone will only hear about P as history way after we've all passed away...hundreds of years from now...but we lived during his time here on Earth so we're all closer to what will eventually be history...but since modern technology this is better documented and can be referenced easier.

I mean, were the folks long ago who could tell stories about how Beethoven stayed up all night then slept until midday then ate porridge then wrote music for days on end then slept a few hours then did it all over again but in between had interesting romance and his peers thought him odd but he was just a "regular guy"...but we never hear that stuff cuz it was so long ago and...?

.

How much info, details did you get to actually care?

Is it really relevant whether you care or not?

She is an information source about the subject.

Just absorb.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I was just able to finish watching this video. Her insights about P are really interesting, especially her comments about his awareness that he needed to reinvent himself after Purple Rain.
She seems like she is a great teacher- curious about the world around her and willing to share what she's learned with others - just like P was.
This was indeed a great video, thanks for posting, and also for your insistence to watch it- it got me intrigued!

Initially it was relevant to me.

That may not make sense to anyone else but I find it difficult if I get a certain "vibe" from someone. I rarely can ignore that vibe simply for the sake of "absorbing"....

However, since that point is now moot...as seen in my post above...

Loved this. I saw the one with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and thoroughly enjoyed that one too. Susan seems like a really nice, genuine person, I don't believe she wants to exploit him for two minutes.
