The Rainbow Children - musical influence

Do you wonder what Prince was listening to when he made TRC? So much attention given to concept and lyrics, but what influenced him musically at this time?
The only thing I can think of is Meshell's Peace Beyond Passion from 1996 with it's jazzy, warm analogue sound (also heavily influenced by religious imagery).

What else?

Would he have faced excommunication or something had he continued? I'm just wondering what consequence it would be for him to continued offering his "version" or take on it.

I was asking specifically about musical influences, not themes or lyrical content.

What was he grooving to? You know, TRC came really out of left field sound wise. His 90s music was either heavily produced rock or more conventional R & B dance music. Then all of a sudden comes TRC sounding like nothing else that came before.

What MUSIC inspired him I wonder?

When listening to the album, I hear early EWF influences (1970-1974) instrumentally speaking (The title song and The Digital Garden). Some James Brown influences as well (the Work pt 1).

I think D`Angelo`s voodoo album inspired prince to go back to a more organic sound compared to his releases in the late 90`s.

Maybe some of Najee's 'smooth jazz' records, since he was playing on the album, etc - and 'Rainbow's sound is basically jazz-lite/smooth jazz in places at least.
