Prince the America B side

The song Girl from the America single has always been one of my favorite B sides. It features Vanity on the 12" version and has always been one of the lesser talked about B sides.ATWIAD was inspired by his exposure to the psychedelic era. This particular album has always been called the Sgt. Pepper of his career. Obviously influenced by The Beatles who thinks this song could have been Prince's take on the Beatles song of the same name?

"You're ass is so tight... shhhh...pop"

I just looked the song up and it states that on the 12" version her voice is backmasked toward the end of the song. I try not to make false statements on here.

In 1985 as a 12 yrs old i noticed the 12" had backword vocals near the end hmmm

So i played it backwords and you can hear a girls voice say
"My flesh is on fire: demon

Cant believe my purple psychedelic pimp slap pimp2

And I descend from grace, In arms of undertow

She might be there, but "featured" is a stretch, don't ya think?

To your original post: I don't really know that he was 'obviously' influenced by The Beatles, at all. It was siblings of Wendy & Lisa that helped influence and shape that record. He certainly wasn't trying to do his own take on a Beatles song. At that point, the last thing Prince wanted to do was copy someone else, including himself. Or did he?

At the time, he noted how easy it would have been to open the follow-up to Purple Rain with the guitar solo at the end of "Let's Go Crazy", in just a different key. He went the opposite direction. The Beatles aren't, nor ever were, the opposite of anything Prince. Hell, "Take Me With U" could easily be an earlier Beatles song, as could "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia", IMO. I just don't think he was solely or mostly influenced by repeated listenings of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

"Raspberry Beret" is a reflection of "Take Me With U" (which is why he ended up playing them as a medley years later). "Pop Life", "America", "Tamborine", "are straight ahead songs, the latter of which mimicked the quirkiness of "Sexuality" or "Something In The Water", and the spartan feel of "Annie Christian". "Pop Life"s haunted vocal stylings reminds us of "Something In The Water" or "All The Critics". "Temptation"'s tag ending is a reflection of stuff he was doing in concert during the Purple Rain Tour with his endless monologue with god (ie a ripped fabric remnant blowing in the breeze). Granted, the first two songs have a hippy feel to them, but once you get into "Condition of the Heart", we're back to Prince ballads.

I just never saw ATWIAD as being so heavily influenced by The Beatles as what people tried to compare it to. Prince certainly kept everyone on their toes with such a hard 180º turn.

As far as "Girl", while it's a nice song, it's literally mind-numbing. That beat drones on, and there's no relief from it. Prince really worked the one-chord approach to songs during that time. "Girl", "America", "Hello", "Mountains" - all basic one-chord songs, although "Girl" deviates a bit more. It's not his take on their song either. Hell, it was the second song he'd written called "Girl" by that point. It's still a very interesting album, and set of B-sides to listen to, though.

Is include a less stronger word? The most unique and interesting track is not even a Prince composition(the title track) yes he wrote the lyrics im sure. So if the rest of the album is a recreation of earlier tunes I guess the intro to The Ladder is the Lets go crazy guitar solo.

Given that Girl goes back to 1982, long before Prince began working on ATWIAD, I doubt it has anything to do with the Beatles.

It got put in a collection with songs that were meant to come off as psychedelic. Although it was written in 82 coincidence Prince dug it out the vault for the 85 album. The whole album listening event back then was described as very 1969

I never said it was a recreation. I'm saying ideas were carried through from one album to another. ATWIAD is as different as it is similar. I suppose the same argument could be made with his dipping into rockabilly over the years with "Horny Toad", "Delirious", "Jack U Off", etc.
