Prince & MJ being put together post mortem now more than ever.

Is anyone else annoyed that these guys are grouped together as if they were friends and collaborators? I only saw it very rarely from super fans of both. This is OK on a personal level if you seem to have a long standing equal fandom and probably cannot be avoided. This wasn't that often before they had both passed on and I guess I consider old school fans "legit".

However online and on twitter I see a bunch of yourng people and johnny-come-latlies just posting about how much they miss them both at the same time and how they were both really great. I mean they were. But I was onle an prince fan and I see peoples twitter feeds going like this "Prince-MJ-Prince-MJ-Prince-MJ- RIP both pic- Prince RIP-RIP MJ- 1980 clip of that James Brown party crash with P and MJ-Prince-MJ.....ETC until forever" Its like crap cant you separate them visually by like a day? Or a real life event or political opinrion? They weren't friends or collaborators and I do not find their music that similar or else hell I'd be a fan too.

Pandora is really bad. I mean I know Prince pulled himself off streaming but the Prince "similar music" channel literally replaces the same frequency that prince songs "would have been played" with Michael Jackson. Typically if I have it on like Matchbox 20, then I hear them every 4th song. On Prince's channel its MJ every 4th song (and its probably the same ratio on MJs channel effectively giving him 2 channels). This contributes to the online chatter of people grouping them together. In reality if no Prince music can be played, then you replace it with PROTEGEES, COLLABORATORS, duetters, people who have covered his songs, and artists he has covered.

This can be as eclectic as Morris Day, Sheila E., Sheena Easton, Gwen Stefani, even Foo Fighters (the best of you, I consider more valid a song on Prince channel than PYT any day!!!) Sheryl Crow. Even by a stretch an artist who insisted their music was heavily inspired by Prince is a better (JT, Bruno, Weeknd) not to use these artists as if to FLOOD the Prince channel but just to replace the 1/4 of Prince songs missing. Because right now its being replaced with MJ when there is a perfectly good MJ channel if I wanted that. Their current other 3/4 of play seems to be OK (ready for the world, the time, parliment, commodores, marvin gaye)

To add insult to injury one of these "I love MJ and Prince the same amount" youngins blocked me on twitter for watching youtube after Prince died, disrespecting his wishes. I'm being a fan wrong. She's too young to remember free MTV views of D&P and missing them. The feeling of never seeing him again, but being slightly relieved to see a video. It's like she'd never heard of consolation.

It's like if you are such a purist then quit grouping MJ and Prince together while simultaneously attacking fans for greiving wrong!

ARGH.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you MJ fan know that you hurt my feelings by putting them together all the time. Can't you remember MJ on an MJ site? Why is he on my Pandora? It would be less annoying if it happened about as much as it used to, but ever since April 21 its been A LOT. Like A LOT A LOT. That isn't fair. I doubt the opposite WOULD HAVE HAPPENED if Prince died in 2009 and MJ died just now. No respect.

Its called stealing thunder and it feels like crap.

confused

But I'm sorry if I offended anyone. This is just what I've observed.

I miss Prince and I only Miss PRINCE yet I have never seen more MJ my whole life than I have now. Annoying (I'm 31)

If just one person agrees with me I will feel much better I guess. I just want to not be the only person who is seeing this trend.

Edit: spacing.

Edit: Nope spacing did not work. Theres supposed to be a space between each paragraph, but its ain't working. Sorry for the wallotext!

This thread will probably be closed, but these two changed the course of popular/black music in a way that's still being felt 30+ years later, so it's no wonder the casual listener will link them both together.

What? Why? I haven't broken the rules. This is Prince.org amirite? I have not insulted MJ. I'm saying the pandora ratio is incorrect. In fact, if I could have gotten the spacing right I would tweet this screenie out to pandora.

There's an MJ sticky which is where pretty much all topics related to Mike are redirected to.

ohmigod this specifically does NOT belong on an MJ sticky because I am complaining about that problem. That would be...ironic I dont know, innapropriate and disrespectful at least. I don't think an MJ fan would want this on an MJ sticky.

This is about grief and loss and putting people who don't go together, together. It could be any artist. It could be Bowie, but its not happening with Bowie. I'm not hearing Bowie on Prince pandora at all. But if I did I would complain and then I don't think someone would say "doesn't this belong on the Bowie sticky?" Because just because a sticky exists doesn't mean everything saying its name belongs there. I mean Jesus and Mary is are the Koran but that doesn't make the Koran a part of the Bible or Christianity (Um doesn't this belong in the Bible? No, no it doesn't) Well that's my analogy anyways.

You seriously want me to go crap all over a specific artist. I wouldn't want to say something negative about MJ on his own sticky that makes no sense.

This is Prince.org and should be a safe place for people like me. Not some grief soup where we are upset about all the artists we miss and put it all together and mix it up.

It's not happening any more now than it was in the 80's, 90's, or 2000's.

Maybe you just notice it more.

Example - MJ has always been the second most talked about artist on this very site, which is the exact reason we have a sticky thread for him - to avoid people making dozens of threads, which was what happened before we had the sticky.

Dave Paul's "Prince & Michael Jackson Experience" club night has been successful for something like a decade now, doing multiple nights a month all over the US.

There is a huge overlap in fanbases for a multitude of reasons.

But it's definitely not happening any more than it used to.

I think you just might have a case of confirmation bias smile

It goes back to their mega success in the 80's (even though Michael was in the Jackson 5/Jacksons and was famous years before Prince hit the scene), so it is natural, while annoying, that they will be linked to the casual listener. I think the true hardcore fans of both, are able to notice the big difference musically and some grew listening to both like I did. They did have a great respect and admiration for each other though. The media always touted them as rivals, so I think it keeps the conversation all stirred up also. Question, does Prince get talked about this much on MJ forums?
