Still one of my favourites after all these years. The words are beautiful and uplifting even though I am a total atheist. I liked the denim and glasses look from SOTT:

Unlike SISIA it doesn't bring me to tears (and it doesn't send me to sleep like SWSAT boxed )

I love that look too and I agree, the Cross is a brilliant song and it has that rock n' roll kick... A lot of airplay potential.

Have you listened to SWSAT until the end? There is an amazing crescendo, which is very uplifting. nod

There is a really quite wonderful version of 'The Cross' taken from P's Rave 2000 concert film, where he utilises a gospel choir to add yet another layer of spirituality and power (if that were possible) to the song...However, Prince says himself that it's 'not a gospel song - because this is a song that cannot be categorised'. And I would agree.

.
Once again, Prince makes use of a wide range of eclectic and unexpected sounds: the marching beat; the gospel choir; the sitar; the guitar; the deep bass vocals, culminating in the raw passion of his singing, exhorting the crowd to join in.

.

It starts gently, but gradually builds to a quite magnificent crescendo, one which undoubtedly matches the strength of P's feelings about his saviour - it has a fantastic melody and hook; it has the ubiquitous rock 'n' roll guitar solo, and an anthemic quality which should appeal to everyone - irrespective of the secular subject-matter.
.

In short: it's bloomin' GOOD!!!

Sadly Prince's passing couldn't generate a number one single, so I very much doubt Christmas will.

Very high odds indeed!

Well that's up to all of us isn't it? If we ALL join in and download/buy the same track between 16 December and 22nd December, in theory it should happen. In theory, Prince's fan are numerous enough for it to work. Have you voted? Have you re-tweeted? Have you joined the FB page? If everyone opts out, of course it won't work. Prince's music has nothing to do with the results.

But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain"

I am afraid so - and different versions. The best thing about SWSAT was when he said "who's the fool singing will, it's would" wink

Interestingly, many people from all around the world have voted so far, including Ireland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Canada, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and even Bahrain! (the vote is anonymous but still provides the country where each vote was made) and sadly not as many from the United Kingdom as I was expecting. The majority of votes have actually been from the United States so far...

Come on the UK, we need yall!!!

I'm waiting until the song has been chosen and will then 'gently persuade' my friends to download it: I figure, instead of sending a card / gift, this could be their way of sending me seasonal well wishes. I can only use this tactic once though - hence biding my time. biggrin

Now is the time to talk about the last song of our pre-selection: Sometimes It Snows In April.

This is the 12th and final track on Prince's 8th album Parade (1986) and the 3rd to be credited to Prince and the Revolution. The initial tracking took place on 21 April 1985 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA. The recording features only Prince, Lisa Coleman (on piano) and Wendy Melvoin (on guitar). Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song during the mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA, but Prince preferred the track without orchestration, and chose to use the track without it for the final release. The version with Fischer's orchestration was still used in the movie Under The Cherry Moon and can be heard at the end of the film.

The song received significant attention after Prince's passing in April 2016, allowing it to chart on several record charts worldwide.

Please tell us what you think of this song, and if this is the song you have voted for, please tell us why you think it would make a great UK Christmas Charts Number 1.

I look forward to reading your comments!

Proleptic irony at its finest...Unless Prince 'knew' - and, given how spiritual he was, and the imagery of the third eye he chose to use in his latter months, one cannot help but wonder if this song really was a premonition of some sort. He was open to it all, after all.

.

The song is more personal than the other two: it has an emotional intimacy, reflected in the simplicity of its arrangement.

.
Like the snow it describes, it has a soft quietness; it gently envelops the listener in a tender caress. It is incredibly moving, lyrically: it speaks of springtime, and new beginnings, the fresh start that comes when a person leaves the corporeal world and enters the everlasting realm...

.
Like snowflakes, tears of sadness fall and then dissipate as the listener accepts that Christopher - and Prince - are in a better place now, and that even if 'those cars don't pass (us) every day', we will always have the beauty of the music to embrace.

It's that sort of a song, isn't it? It's so sad - but also so happy! He 'used to cry for Tracy' - but now he knows that when someone passes, and we cry, really we're only crying for ourselves...Isn't that the truth? smile

I don't get it.

it's simple

1) prince didn't celebrate xmas

2) the UK charts are a joke. being number 1 isn't a prestigious thing these days, if it ever was

3) the uk xmas number is is a much bigger joke, reserved typically for shite like the x factor, and alleged peados like gary glitter, cliff richard, michael jackson etc, or some fuckwit running a campaigng to get some other shite at number 1 instead of x factor

4) no sane normal person gives a fuck about who is at number 1 at any time of the year, nevermind at xmas, and few people would be able to tell you who was number 1 last xmas without googling it, and even less could say who was number 1 the year before without googling. most people would take a guess at it being some x factor shite tho

5) the problem with many of these campaigns is the choice of track which may not appeal to masses, and general disorganisation and amatuer hour planning. add to the mix that the UK charts is affected by streaming plays as well as sales, it'll usually be some justine beaver shite at number 1 if it's not the shite factor

6) if folk want to give money to a charity or raise money for a charity it's best to skip to the bottom line and give to the cause directly instead

7) prince is 4 life, not 4 xmas

I hate to rain on everyones Parade, but the biggest problem with this campaign is that well over 50% of the 'sales' that contribute towards the UK charts these days come from streaming services. Drake was no1 for weeks and weeks because of the volume of streaming when he had long since passed the sales peak of the track.

Streaming has affected even the XFactor's ability to achieve the Xmas no1.. last years winner only scraped into the top10 because she had very little streaming of her track. If a juggernaught like XFactor cannot achieve it.. the chances of a small but enthusiastic campaign for Prince are very slim I think

With Prince not being on any streaming sites the campaign would have to rely on sales only (like the XFactor now does) and I just don't think there will be the impact.

Much as I would like to see Prince riding high in the Charts once again.. I don't think the singles chart is the place for it.

And you need a really shitty song to be number 1 in the UK. Good songs have no place in the UK charts in this day and age. Rip off someone else's song and talk all over it and number 1 no problem.

Tidal doesn't release stats cuz it's doing dogshit figures and hoping to find a buyer to take it over and make jay z some more money

A poll has been added on twitter, where you can directly see the results as they happen. The results from the other survey will also be taken into account at the end.

twitter.com/Prince4Xmas/s...0721666048

Those who have already voted in the survey can still use the poll on the twitter page. This will just make the results stronger.

well let's hope you are right about that, as these polls and stupid things are embarrassing to the majority of fans, particularly when they fail. and with the choice of tracks in the poll there's no way on earth any of them are going to hit the top 40, nevermind number 1, so the end result makes prince look incapable of having a hit single even with a campaign behind it

Thank you Guitarhero. Let's not worry too much about this person as his post indicates that he has not followed this from the start or didn't bother to read any of the previous posts about the campaign and therefore is speaking unknowingly.

I say 'he' confidently because I happen to know who this person is from back at the 2007 aftershows, where he stood out as a complete fanatic to say the least and if he carries on trying to ruin this positive campaign with his negativity, I will have not choice but to post a photo of him, which I happen to have taken whilst in the aftershow queues so that everyone can see what such a killbuzz really looks like.

Are you serious? You attempt to defuse a person's alleged negativity towards some doomed, deeply misguided mission aiming to validate your own obsession by threatening to shame them by posting a photo of them on the internet? It's not unique that looks like the unhinged fanatic here. You will 'have no choice'?!? [Snip - luv4u]

If people don't want to participate, they don't have to, that's cool.

What I will not tolerate is people being negative, rude and aggressive about this campaign. The point of this campaign is to celebrate and honour Prince, not to attack one another. Nor do I want it to become an excuse for rude people to turn up and release their aggressivity towards me or any other members of the org.

The photo insinuation was to make unique realise that perhaps if he wasn't hiding behind his anonymity, he would behave in a more civil manner. The forum's anonymity should not be a tool for bullying.

Furthermore, I am finding the words you used in your post very extreme and quite a disgrace on this forum and I think it puts the great artist it is supposed to represent to shame.

Not really big on irony are you? You seem as pious and lacking in self awareness as the artist you use as a shield to cover up your own inadequecies so please, carry on - at least it's not the tragedy it was when the it came to the calcification and solidification of a genius like Prince Nelson's brain.
