I think the biggest problem with a lot of insiders giving interviews is that they are bias. I mean look at Susan Rogers she was friends with Susannah and soooo bias, every love song was about her.....I don't think so....and she was putting that out there as if the shit was true...I'm like damn!!!! And yes some of his most beautiful love songs..it really is obvious common sense y'all. I mean beside his music, I feel like Vanity was the love of his life. She was just the ultimate inspiration. I'm hoping someone write a book about the two of them. I've been a long time fan of P. If u look at some of the old clips of v6 TV appearance yes u will see Vanity sporting a ring. I would love to hear the story behind that. Most definitely from Prince.....

I never heard anything whatsoever about Prince giving Vanity a ring. I do think the "The 80s" remark Prince added into the song later was for us, his fans. I think he was shedding a different light on an old song. I also believe when he wrote a song for someone, he thought of another woman for it later sometimes, or wrote a song later for more than one woman.

Here you see Susannah wearing hers

Vanity

It's in clear view https://www.youtube.com/w...iCTMAvYwkM

There are photos I saw as well. Prince had even claimed her as wife in front of those reporters at the AMAs the first day he met her.

I do believe it's possible he may have wrriten a song (fantasy or real) and later related the song to a woman he wasn't with when he wrote the song--even if he was already in a relationship with another woman. He already proved he's capable of doing that. Either way, whether Prince intended to marry either of the 2 proteges or not, they both had rings on the same finger. He had them wearing it for a reason, I'm sure. So, yes, Prince gave a ring to both Vanity and Susannah. Even if it's not about Vanity or Susannah, that song has more than one verse that doesn't appear to relate to Mayte at all. It's just an opinion. In the song Adore that some said was about Susannah and some have said to be about Vanity, his words: You made love to me Like you were afraid Was you afraid of me? Was I the first?... One would easily think the woman never slept with anyone before him but we all know that's not the case with Susannah nor Vanity. As far as I'm concerned there could have been a protege in his life in the 80s that the world didn't know about that he gave a ring to. However, I do believe the good old days and him saying the 80s afterwards is exactly what it is. I don't see no other meaning than him meeting the woman in the 80s. The 80s alone knocks Mayte off the list of possibilities--even if he was talking about a virgin (if that's why you think it was about Mayte) because Prince knew he met Mayte in the 90s. Prince was involved with more than one virgin as well. The ring verse knocks Mayte off as well because we already know she was still sporting that ring during the time of the recording of that song. Or maybe the song was nothing but a fantasy. No one really knows. All of it is nothing more than speculation and it's ok to think it's about Vanity, Susannah, Mayte, more than one woman or even a man. Whatever floats your boat. smile

Adore is about Vanity She did a interview in the mid 80's she talked about not knowing who owned Prince's heart. Well "Adore" was his answer to her. Another song " Lion of Judah" which reference "Adore" is also about Vanity. To me this is evidence of Vanity being the love of his life. These two songs span from approx 87-2007. These are just two of many written for Vanity. Their love for each other was amazing.

I don't think "Love U, but don't trust U anymore" is about Mayte. The biggest, flashing sign to me is the fact that he didn't "pick the flower". That's a metaphor for taking her virginity. He's saying he didn't have sex with her. And he's saying if he had have, maybe she wouldn't have let curiosity get the better of her and run off to have an affair with someone else. That aside, Mayte was so absolutely devoted to that man. Watching interviews from that time to her behavior now.. it's so easily seen that she was and is crazy about him.

I'm not convinced it's about Mayte either.

I've also never been convinced that lyric was about taking a girls virginity. It's an obvious assumption because of the term "deflower". And in this song he talks about "picking the flower" However he sings it seemingly in relation to this girls career.

It makes me think perhaps he is singing about picking the flower of her career. Rather than leaving her to flourish out in the wild.

Doesn't "Melt With U" mention Mayte being a virgin? "don't look now but there's a river of blood"

This thread has gotten insane and over-complicated.

Vanity and Prince were never engaged via a ring.
Who even said anything about Susannah? We already know they were engaged.
Adore is about Vanity.
ILYBIDTYAnymore we have all accepted as being about Mayte for years now.
Staying on the Org that Prince gave Vanity a ring and posting supposed photos of her wearing "a" ring then saying you actually have no idea what the ring is, is throwing out HUGE misinformation.
Not trying to hurt anyone, just saying I think members of the Org have a responsibility to be as accurate as possible, especially now, instead of just pulling stuff out of our butts and posting it not caring if it's true or not.
We all make mistakes I do too, but come on, we're getting way off track now.

A year ago we didn't know the story of P and Sheila.

Doesn't mean it's an accurate assumption. The lyrics heavily imply it was a woman who cheated on Prince. It's quite possible he pulled more than the title song from the vaults.

I have no interest in this, however Vanity is wearing a ring in that video. It might not mean anything but it's hardly mis-information.

First, I would like to voluntarily add that there's nothing anybody can say here that will hurt me or make me angry. As God is my witness, nothing.

Yes, I posted that Vanity 6 video and posting that video is a fairly decent way to back up my claim about Prince giving Vanity a ring for the unbelievers. You might want to read my words again. I can also make it plain for you. I did not say Prince proposed to Vanity. I said he gave her a ring. That video of her wearing it is proof.

I think it's naive to think that just because fans that's been here decided a song to be about a woman that every one else should shut up and settle for what you believe. Every one is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions.

Being accurate is a very good idea. I encourage it. It's the exact reason I shared that Vanity 6 link. You must not understand what my replies about the song are about. You are so focused on if Prince proposed to Vanity that you clearly dismissed what I posted.

What's happened to this thread is exactly what happen to any other threads here when more than one of Prince's exes are discussed in the same topic. You've been here long enough to know that already. It would be useless complaining about what will likely always happen when these types of discussions come in to play. But don't expect that I will tiptoe my words in nor will I bow to anyone's statements here.

I don't see anything I typed that's misleading or confusing. What are you confused about, sweetie? I'll be more than happy to explain my words to you again but don't expect me to believe what you believe.

And no, I don't care if anyone's ring is real or fake, I don't care if the ring was or wasn't a proposal. You wanna know why? Scan back up to the poster that "asked me" who do I think the song I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore is about. Was that you that asked it it? Now that I responded WITH at least 4 or 5 reasons why I think it's not about Mayte but it's not good enough, I see. I am not sure who it IS about but I am very sure of who I THINK it's not about. This is just my opinion. My words aren't set in stone.

Someone even wants to automatically assume the ring to be costume jewelry. She asked "ever heard of costume jewelry". I'm the one confused. I thought we were discussing the ring not a proposal. Is it about me showing proof of the ring that upsets you or is it the thought of someone believing Prince proposed to Vanity? You can't control what others believe.

I never even told you if I thought he proposed to Vanity. I said he gave her a ring. I even added what someone said about why Prince had her wearing the ring.

I think you're confusing others and trying to make others think I said something misleading to them.

I don't mind having discussions about such topics about the women that were involved with Prince, but when my words are questioned as be misleading or confusing chances are I'm going to respond.

You're the one that said you never heard about Prince giving Vanity a ring or proposing or whatever. So let's get it straight that I responded to your statement by sharing that YouTube link, that Prince INDEED GAVE VANITY a ring (gave). Seeing a ring on her wedding finger says what to you? I'm curious to know your answer to that one. Again, I never said Prince proposed to Vanity. I won't try to explain anything else regarding any ring he gave to Vanity because my proof is already posted.

Someone asked about Sheila. If it's Sheila, do you think he didn't propose to Sheila either? Would it be costume jewelry if you saw Sheila wearing a ring on her wedding finger, too? What about Susan? I doubt that you have an accurate answer.

With all this being said, no one will say anything about that song that will make me think that song was about Mayte because I already listed several of reasons above why I believe it's not. You will surely be wasting your time trying to convince me.

Yes, I believe Adore is about Vanity. Especially when I saw on her Facebook that she called her and Prince two little lions. The Morning Papers... I don't know who that song's about since I listened to the song twice. But an interesting thing I want to add about Anna is that in one of her interviews she said that she left and changed phone numbers because Prince kept calling. I need to look for the interview. But, in another interview, I think this one was after Prince passed, she said they stayed in touch. And was that story about her and him doing it in that elevator true?

Sure, it's about someone but since he is the author and not here to clarify, I am happy to leave it be.

I call people sweetie, hun, anything nice like that. I don't all the time though since I read some people don't like it. But, yes honest to God, I don't use a word such as sweetie to mean I'm upset. It's not in my character. You don't know me so you're assuming my words incorrectly. Growing up in a Christian environment and still in it I was taught not to lie, especially not to lie and use God's name in that lie. I was taught that. I will never post anything and say honest to God and be lying. What gets me angry is stuff that happens in this world like kids getting raped, babies left in a car, people being tortured and killed for no reason and the perpetrator not getting what I think would be a fair sentencing for the crime. What a person says on social media to me or about me will never upset me because I know the person knows nothing about me. If I worried about stuff like that I just might need to see a psychiatrist. I'm good. But I do hope you understand what I said about the ring comment.

For me it's about being close to someone. His music feels so intimate that I feel like I 'know' him in some way. When he hurts I want to comfort him, when he has a problem I want to help solve it. Knowing who and what and why feels like part of that.

Crap. Just realised I've written that all in the wrong tense. I just can't get used to him not being here.

I don't know why there's so much interest. I mean it's nice to know who's the lucky lady. But after I found out about what Carmen said I was like... Huh? He told more than one woman TMBGITW was about her? So, some love songs I no longer have interest in knowing who the song is about. I just thought I'd join in the discussion on AllMusic123's question.

"Songs & the woman he sang about
Hi Orgers, I tried to find this and there are bits and pieces but not a thread on the songs and which woman (or women) it was about. For instance
Pink Cashmere (fallen in love with this lately!) was about Anna Garcia I think.
What else?"

Sorry about that I didn't see the question on the end. I like the song but I don't understand it entirely. Very Princely. Like was he talking about a past/future love in a spiritual sense or something else? He said I know you love me and what you're waiting for (I think), and you know I'm free... I was thinking this person knows him on a personal level. Idk. I got even more confused with him seeing the woman as him when he walks past the mirror. I saved the video on my phone to watch it again every now and then since I don't go on my laptop everyday. Guess I'm just curious as to what someone else thinks about that song.

Yes, called her. You talking Vanity, right? I also read that he called her again several of times and I'm thinking she wasn't much interest? I know she said that she didn't like him right away and that she thought he was gay. I have to go looking. I have sooooo much saved on 2 of my laptops, a 1tb hard-drive that I own, and I've also read stuff from several sites. About him calling her, either I read this or heard it, I will let you know when I find it. But it was at the American Music Awards January 1980 they met

No, not that her saw her on the show but that he met her there. OK, reading this I think you're asking me if he saw her on Video Soul. If that's what you're asking, then the answer is I don't know if he talked to her after Video Soul. I'm talking about him calling her that night they met at the AMAs.

"Really? I didn't know that he saw her on the show and called her afterwards. Do u have the link to this statement? I would love to see that!"

No, not that her saw her on the show but that he met her there. OK, reading this I think you're asking me if he saw her on Video Soul. If that's what you're asking, then the answer is I don't know if he talked to her after Video Soul. I'm talking about him calling her that night they met at the AMAs.

Oh ok sorry, Lol. I thought u were saying he saw her interview on Video Soul and then called her to tell her how fine she looked even though they had broken up.lol

They met at the AMAs. She was in a girl group of Rick James' and saw Prince perform - and that was it. She basically left RJ to go with Prince.
That first night though is just as the song says. As usual Prince went home and "was rappin' too the sun came up" and called her to tell her how fine she looked.
Probably at 3am 😊

There's a great long podcast someone posted the other day about her and Prince and a lot of other people in the good old days. It's a recent Jill Jones interview and it's worth a few hours if you ever have the time, I split it up over a few sessions

Thanks for the replies everyone, they're great. Even though of course some of it's speculation. And no doubt there are some songs that are either fantasy about who knows who, or songs that he may have written thinking of more than one woman... still it's interesting.

I would love to know who Do Me Baby was about. Maybe someone we've never heard of, as he was only 21 or so when he wrote that. He sings it with such passion in that concert in ... think it's new york. Very beautiful performance.

The first time I heard, ILYBDTUA, I thought the lyric about not picking the flower of his favorite protege meant, that there was a young women he worked with while he and Mayte were married, and he would have liked this woman but he abstained in order to be faithful. And he was saying if he'd cheated on M. -- as he did on so many women -- she would not have taken him for granted. But I am not certain that's correct, that was just my interpretation from a few listens.

Am really enjoying this thread - would love to know more if anyone has any additional tidbits, factlets, quotes or theories. We all know theories are just that.

I think Prince was monogamous during his marriages. Definitely the 2nd one and probably the first.

I thought his relationship with Manuela overlapped with his marriage to Mayte, no?
.

And, don't forget - he was still 'involved' with Nona Gaye (at least) up until the point of engagement to Mayte...
.

I think he might have been faithful whilst Mayte was pregnant - but after what happened with their baby, I wouldn't be overly surprised to hear he had subsequent 'illicit encounters' - I've no evidence to support it, but he certainly wouldn't be unusual in that respect (trauma in a marrage / relationship leading to one or both parties wanting to find solace with another).

If you look at the liner notes for Rave he thanks Manuella and Mayte. Now why would you thank someone who is working at PP as a secretary. Odd. I think the relationship overlapped.

Thanks, I heard JJ podcast recently. It was really good. I knew Vanity and Prince met at the AMA in 1980. It was stated in her obituary and that solidified it for me. Are you saying that vanity used to be in a Rick James girls group or is that a typo? I never heard that before. Did she see him perform before or after they met at the AMA? I recently read somewhere that she saw Prince perform at a concert and I wasn't sure about that as I had always thought that her first association with him was at the AMA going by what she said and countless other sources, so that sounded wrong to me. Anyway, if u have any available articles or interviews stating that she was in RJ girl group and saw him perform somewhere, can u link me to it? Thanks biggrin

The thought also ran across my mind that Adore sounded like it could have been for Vanity when I heard the lyrics "I was rapping till the sun came up", as I knew that he had called her at 3 am after they met at the AMA.

This thread has gotten insane and over-complicated. Vanity and Prince were never engaged via a ring. Who even said anything about Susannah? We already know they were engaged. Adore is about Vanity.

A year ago we didn't know the story of P and Sheila.

ILYBIDTYAnymore we have all accepted as being about Mayte for years now.

Doesn't mean it's an accurate assumption. The lyrics heavily imply it was a woman who cheated on Prince. It's quite possible he pulled more than the title song from the vaults.

LOVE U

[Edited 10/29/16 8:02am]

Wow way to go!!! Set'em straight!!!!
