Superconductor said: I agree that there is social commentary, but also think he has angst about "we all have a space to fill". This seems to be connected in a personal way to the next two songs on ATWIAD, The Ladder and Temptation. To me, he is suggesting that the best way to fill it is through religion (the Ladder) but his problem is that he tries to fill it through sex (Temptation). The conflict produces angst.

Interesting take. Makes sense.

.

I just don't feel the angst when I hear the song.

More like questioning/ challenging the listener as in what are you doing? Fill that space!

The drive of the song, the piercing keys and bass, it sounds driven, pushing forward.

.

Just looked up the album info, was released on April 21, 1985. sad

Loved that album so much when it came out.

I'M WITH YOU, really it was realeased on April 21?

Wikipedia says 21st, Prince Vault says 22nd. Close enough confused

Already a backlash against Prince for ATWIAD for not being PR2.

During the pentiulm concert when he sings the lines "everybody needs a thrill " and "was it a boy when you wanted a girl" very moving stuff. To me personally

Nah, #7 is still a sizable hit. Higher than some of PR's singles, in fact.

By coincidence, Pop Life was played the first time I saw Prince live, and also the last time - but not any of the many times between those.

Indeed, self reflection. The melody and the lyrics, both are sort of sad.
