Dig U Better Dead? Reconciling better access to music

Like most people on this forum, I grew up anxious for the next Prince album or the next time he would be on TV or his next video or movie, etc. Considered prolific, he delivered with new music releases almost every year. But, when YouTube and other internet access became popular you saw nothing from Prince. Other artists, yes. Prince , no.

Shortly after he died, I began seeing HOARDS of Prince on Youtube! Videos of interviews and concert footage I never knew existed. I even got to see concert footage from the 1988 Lovesexy concert in Germany that I attended!!!!!

I found myself excited thinking how much I love having access to this music and then sadly realizing its only because Prince is dead that this is happening. I get happy and then back to sad.

How about U?

Yes, it's a weird irony that it took his death for us to be able to enjoy his music in this way, but I have no conflicted feelings about it at all. He is 100% responsible for the choices he made when he was alive in this area (with which I strongly disagreed), so I feel no sadness in enjoying this type of footage.

.

I find it terribly sad, yes.

.

It's not the way he wanted it and, unlike some folks, I do believe that matters.

.

Whether a given artist is alive or dead, the pirating that occurs on YouTube is unconscionable. I always deeply admired Prince's ability to keep, for the most part, his music off that unscrupulous site.

.

The rampant posting of P's official discography/videography - as well as the unreleased stuff - is, quite honestly, shameful. You're absolutely right - every video posted there is another reminder of all our loss...

.

By NO MEANS in ALL CASES, I do believe there are SOME individuals who - based on their own written expression - are emotionally detached enough to "dig him better dead." I find some (though by NO MEANS all) folks' hand-wringing over "what are we gonna get now from The Vault!" to be highly suspect...

Agreed on that.

.

I respected Prince so much during life that I didn't ever think about trying to pirate his music or anything like that. If I saw a youtube video I swear to god I reported it. It wasn't what he wanted.

.

Youtube exploding from the moment his death was public to now is a showing on how much we loved him and how much people respected him. To be honest now that he is gone I doubt he'd care about it - in fact I'd bet that this is exactly what he'd want now - since it preserves his memory in the best way.

.

With that said - if we never see a single vault track I don't even care. I've got so much work to be thankful for already now that anything more would be just an added bonus. I certainly will appreciate the feeling of holding a new Prince record in my hand - purchased from my local record shop - but I feel I owe him - he doesn't owe me a goddamn thing.
