Amazon.ca emailed me today to cancel my Black Album order. I'd placed it back in June or July...

The reissue I bought also has the plain paper sleeves as well as the printed versions.

My US reissue only came with the printed sleeves. Also my version is not cropped.

Interesting!!!?? Hmmm....Well to be honest I would have thought Black Album would have came as one of the last ones (since it came out officially in 1994). I have the vinyl promo already but thinking about getting it anyway too.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't think of Sainsbury's as an option and was still smarting from missing the £19 pre-sale price on Amazon which shot up to £25 on release day. After visiting 3 Sainsbury stores yesterday/today I finally found a copy in the Purley Way, Croydon store.

I must say, I'm less than thrilled with the quality of the packaging, to be honest. The outer sleeve is darker than the original (something I'd noticed with other Prince reissues, particularly the 'Prince' album) and has been cropped slightly along the right edge and bottom of the picture. It looks a bit like a bad photcopy. If I was generous I'd say it was intentional, to differentiate between the original and the reissue, but it's probably due to shoddiness.

My copy also came with plain paper sleeves on the records with the printed bags loose inside. Again, the printed sleeve are much darker than the originals and are also printed on a matt paper (the originals were shiny). The peach colour is closer to an orange on these new versions! The printing of the lyrics is especially sloppy - very little definition to the type with 'blobby' characters and a few 'runs' here and there (see image below: new reissue on the left, original on the right). If I found this at a record fair I would probably dismiss it as a bootleg.

I know this is par for the course with many modern vinyl pressings but it is disappointing.

I've yet to listen to the record yet (my amp's currently out of action) so will let others comment on the quality of the pressing itself.

I recently discovered Vulfpeck (funny and funky, imo, you can check them out if you want.

They also sell an (expensive) compressor though, that does interesting things to sound, see also their youtube video of how it changes the Jacksons.. (word of warning, their sense of humour and style is not for everyone, focus on the audio if the rest is not for you. It IS for you if you want your music jamming, and also bumping!

I'd like to hear more about how the new reissue sounds. I haven't been buying the vinyl reissues, but if there were one that I'd want, it's SOTT--as long as it's done well.

Always felt the CD sound was thin on this album. And the mastering was done in such a way that the volume was really low. I didn't have the previous vinyl to compare it to, but in contrast to the CD, the layered vocals on Forever In My Life and background guitar and deeper bass is evident throughout the 2 discs.
