Going to Minneapolis next July

So next July we will be stopping in Minneapolis and I will have a full day to see all things Prince related. biggrin A Paisley Park tour is first on my list, and the Purple Rain house, and First Avenue. I'd also like to see Lake Minnetonka. What else is worth a look? The Electric Fetus would also be cool, but I'd like to organize everything so we're not zigzagging across town and wasting time. Any suggestions?

I lived here almost 20 years ago. It's a beautiful place in the summer. One of the best summer's ever.

First Avenue is a must.

The old Glam Slam is at110 North 5th Street. Gilbert bought it from Prince and changed it into The Quest - which was the go-to club for a long time (I saw The Time there in 1997, with Terry Lewis sitting in on bass). I think it's closed now, but it might be open under another name. It's within a 2-3 block walk from First Avenue. (North on 1st Ave N, then west on 5th St). It's a rather non-descript building, but easy to find by address.

It's nice to go download and hang out and walk along Nicollet Mall. It's a pedestrian mall, with lots of shops, etc.

Go visit the restaurant that Mary Tyler Moore sat in during the opening credits of the show. I think there's an MTM status right in that area, too. Research it.

Spend a day at the Mall of America, if you want to. It's outside of town, near the airport.

There used to be a pretty rad BBQ place in Calhoun Square (a small shopping building on Hennepin & West Lake Street) that is worth the visit.

Also, 1408 West Lake Street (right across from Calhoun Square) is the old NPG Store.

It's wonderful to hang out around Lake Calhoun (just down the road) or Lake of the Isles (nearby, too).

And of course go to the record stores in the area.

I believe with all my heart Morningstarlet meant the house that was used in Purple Rain. (Exterior only, of course...)

The "Purple Rain" house is at 3420 Snelling Avenue, the street that runs between Hiawatha and Minnehaha in South Minneapolis’s Longfellow neighborhood.

The bottom half looks redone since 1984. I wonder when that was done?

Thanks all! Yes, I meant the house from Purple Rain. Mapquest says it's only 3 miles from First Avenue. I went to Mall of America several years ago on another trip to Minnesota. All suggestions and ideas are welcome. biggrin

Thanks for posting that. I'd love to see his childhood home but may not have time. I only have a day to see everything.
