The Love We Make

Somebody's Somebody

Right Back In My Arms

Jam of the Year

But I also want to say that I love all the cover songs on Emancipation. I really think Prince's take on I Can't Make u Luv Me is haunting. I loved the original and I love his version-that is just a great song period.

Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

Thank You Prince

Well, if you don't buy it, that's fine. I've been a fan since about 83 / 84, and when "Emancipation" was announced I was excited to hear it, especially as he trailed it by saying he felt it was the album he was born to make. The day it came out I took my CD walkman to work, rushed to the shop at lunch, then hurried back to listen to it at my desk. I couldn't wait until the evening to listen to it.

It left me utterly cold though. From the opening track it just didn't work for me at all. So plastic sounding, terribly produced, and none of the songs apart from "The Holy River" grabbed me in the slightest. I listened to it again and again over the next few weeks and if anything I liked it less and less. I really, truly wanted to like it, but I thought it was terrible, and I still do. Too many covers, too much poor R&B, too many tracks that made me cringe ("Let's Have A Baby" just popped into my head when I wrote that). Just my opinion, as a fan who is still cut up about his passing.

Would I have liked the songs if they had appeared on 80s albums? I very much doubt it. A song leaves me cold regardless of when it was released. A decade doesn't make a weak song good.

Interesting. I personally love 2/3 of the album, but I admit that the album has flaws.

Just out of curiousity, what do you think of the songs Soul Sanctuary, Joint 2 Joint, In This Bed Eye Scream, Curious Child, New World and The Human Body? To me, I cannot fathom how any Prince fan could possibly dislike all of those (imo fantastic) songs. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on those ones....

I didn't like any of those in all honesty.

If they like Rock I would add some live songs. If they like Guitar Joy in Repetition and Just My Imagination from ONA have great jams.

I actually know the writer of Somebody's Somebody. And Prince picking her lyrics is one of her proudest accomplisments.

Took me a while to reply, sorry, but here are my thougths. Then again, this is a to a friend from YOU so if u like the songs an these are your favs, then that is what matters. And I am by no means an expert. This is just my opinion only. Everyone likes different Prince stuff for different reasons. With that said.....YES SOME LIVE SONGS WOULD BE GREAT TO ADD TOO and BLUES (if your friend likes blues)...but looks like you there are a lot of albums still missing, so assuming it's still in progress. I have been thinking that maybe an album for each of his styles of music might make more sense. Been thinking that I might do that myself for friends. (or just myself). Blues, Rock, Funk, Hip/Hop feel, Pop, R&B, Accoustic, Dance/Fun. There are so many good songs, it's just so hard to narrow them all down. headbang eyepop

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I decided to have "When Doves Scream" be the very first song, because every time I listen to it I crack up and I am also blown away by some of the guitar.

Do you really think that New Power Generation is just fluff?

I like it a lot, but I have strong doubt about whether or not to include it.

I am adding two songs from "Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic" 'Baby Knows' and 'Prettyman'

I would like to include more songs, but my last count was 52 songs.

Oh, and I am including some very early Prince:

I'm Yours"

When You Were Mine

Head

Sexuality,

Jack U Off

.

I am hoping that this collection of songs will be titilating enough to get my friend to start listening to Prince again.

The only reason I say it fluff (which I shouldn't have called it that), is cause it's not a lot of Prince on it as far as his singing on it. It's mostly other people singing and rapping. I'm talking about New Pow Gen II. The last one on the album. Include it. It's a fun song. And if u like it I say go for it. I really like Batdance and some on here think it's just a series of samples and movie clips (which in a way it is) but I still love it. And many people don't like Tony M rapping but I personally think it's fun. Is he the best rapper ever? No. But Prince picked him and that's ok w me. He's fun and it usually goes with te song in my opinion. Many orgers totally disagree. This is why I say everyone likes something different. And thank goodness for that. Diversity is a good thing!

And when doves scream is a fun song. And yes the guitar parts are great. The music is awesome. I'm including it on my brothers "rock" cd I'm making cause he would also love the sceaming cause he likes heavy metal. Lol it's just sorta wierd to hear him cuss so much on one song. he usually was a little more subtle. Haha

So curious, are u not going to include any of the more popular albums like 1999, purple Rain, ATWIAD and Parade for a reason? And his newer stuff like AOA, hit and runs, and also 3121 has tons of great songs. And his live albums like one night alone, etc. there are soooo many good songs on those. biggrin headbang

Oh and Prettyman is one of my favs!!!! And my kids love it too. It's sooooo funny cool

Well I really like it (New Power Generation II) but I have serious doubts about whether my friend will like it for exactly the reason you described. But I am starting over think every thing and I just need to get the CD's made and send them. I can always send another one later on. I am not including anything from 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, because he has already heard it all and he owns Parade and SOTT. One of my goals is to give him songs that he has never heard, that is why I didn't include any of the stuff that was on the radio. I don't know, I think that he might have already heard "7". I think it's great that you are making a heavy metal rock CD for your brother. Is it going to have lots of different bands or just Prince on it? Have you heard Billy's Sunglasses? I wouldn't call it heavy metal, but I do think that it is a song that would sound good to a metal head. biggrin

Yeah, don't overthink it. If you like that song (which I think it's a fun song, so she will probably enjoy it as well), keep it on there. This is a CD from you, not me. We all have our favorites.

Yes, Billy's Sunglasses is great! I love that one. The CD I'm making for my brother is going to be all Prince at his hardest rocking moments. LOL He tried to tell me the other day that Prince isn't considered rock! mad omg hrmph shocked stfu no no no! fryingpan fishslap So I'm proving to him that he most definately WAS and APPITIMIZED rock. He only knows the stuff that became the most famous in the 80's and maybe a few from the 90's, so of course he knows nothing about what Prince can really do. He basically said Let's Go Crazy was his only really rocking song. eek But I'm making the CD to prove to him that he most certainly knew how to rock his pants off (litterally) haha. My brother likes faster (like hair band) rock mostly and not more mellow, so not sure about Billy. I was thinking more Bambi, When Doves Scream, Whole Lotta Love-Live, Peach, Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue, Endorphinmachine, Temptation, America, Zannalee, Dreamer, Baby Knows, Darling Nikki, Plectrumelectrum, FunkRoll, Purple Smoke on the Water and maybe a few blues ones. Some of these are a little more bluesy rock (which I love), but he likes more "heavier metal songs" None of these are super heavy metal, but many are hard rock. I played him I'm Yours the other day, and he didnt really like it, so I'm leaving that one off. He didn't like the 70's sound. neutral

Yes, he did. Whole Lotta Love was on Indio Nights. They are amazing. I love him live best. Whole Lotta Love-Live

Peach

Let's Go Crazy

Computer Blue

Endorphinmachine

Temptation

America

Zannalee

I Like It There

Dreamer

Baby Knows

So Far, So Pleased (this might come off, as it's a little poppy and he wont like that about it)

Bambi

Darling Nikki

Plectrumelectrum

The Truth (just cause it's a cool song, not that it's rocking)

The Ride (same reason as the Truth)

When Doves Scream

Wish he would have released every single concert on CD or DVD. haha A little excessive, yes, and I'd be broke, but it would be worth it. headbang Yeah, he wasnt into I'm Yours. Oh well. This is the list. Unless I find more, this might be it.

Whole Lotta Love-Live

Peach

Let's Go Crazy

Computer Blue

Endorphinmachine

Temptation

America

Zannalee

I Like It There

Dreamer

Baby Knows

So Far, So Pleased (this might come off, as it's a little poppy and he wont like that about it)

Bambi

Darling Nikki

Plectrumelectrum

The Truth (just cause it's a cool song, not that it's rocking)

The Ride (same reason as the Truth)

When Doves Scream

Purple Smoke on Water-Live.

.

Thanks for the list.

It looks pretty good.

I'll have to check out the songs that I haven't heard yet, highlighted above.

Let me know how your brother likes it and if changes his oppinion about Prince. biggrin

.

I will! I think he will be surprised that he had some pretty rockin' songs that he never knew about. Let me know how your friend likes his/hers too. headbang wink

Also this album always makes me think of how he was so excited about starting a family and becoming a dad. Also love Let's Have A Baby. So personal and sad because of the circumstance. And on Sex in the Summer, his baby's ultrasound heartbeat is the beat for the song at the begining. I always firgured that would be so hard for him to hear after he lost his son. cry

Most of my favorite songs on the album are on Disc 2 !

Disc 2 really works great as a wonderful slow jam album!. Really nothing so consistently like that among his entire catalog that I am awre of.

I'm sure I'm alone in this one, but Dreamin' About U is my favorite so far from the Emancipation CDs.

You are not alone - it is one of the all time great overlooked albums tracks on an album that had too much for the average music public to consume properly. It is one of the tracks that make Emancipation a great album and severely and unfairly underrated.
