Rock in Rio 2-cd - new release?

Last week I ordered a double cd set through bol.com, called Rock In Rio. Many artists performed at this festival and as it seems, Prince as well. The release date is set for June 17th. An image of the cover is not a available yet though.
According to the tracklisting, I'd say it was recorded suring the tour of 1990.
Does anyone have more info? I ordered it blindly, with actually very few information to go on.
The tracklist is as follows:

CD 1:
Something Funky (This House Comes)
Let's Go Crazy
Horny Pony
Kiss
Mancini Medley
Purple Rain
Bambi
Take Me With U
Shake!

CD 2:
Dr Feelgood (love Is A Serious Business)
Piano Solo: Venus De Milo / The Question Of U
Ain't No Way (should be Rosie Gaines)
Nothing Compares 2 U
Baby, I'm A Star / R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Anyone? Thank you in advance 4 any info.

Think it's either the show on the 19th of January 1991 or the one on the 24th, both take place in Rio and both have pretty much the exact same setlist. Neither the old Databank website nor Digital Garden have any listings for bootlegs that contain either of those two shows, so potentially this could be a new release of a previously unbootlegged concert, I'm not knowledgable enough to know for sure though hmmm

Edit: Oh wait, my mistake, the one on the 19th is listed as taking place on the 18th, think that's because it was an am performance. So seems likely that it's probably that then, it's been bootlegged before, sorry sad

Thanks 4 the info. Every now & then bootlegs are available through normal channels and most of the times very briefly. So if this is the case I might be lucky. Otherwise it will be a regular release. My guess is that a lot of companies / people take advantage of his passing to release never before seen material. The website I ordered it through, belongs to the regular channels though.

This is 100% bootleg. Similar releases of Nude Tour and Syracuse have appeared since Prince passed.

This Rio show has been aired on TV in South America and has been circulating for 25 years in both audio and video.

The National Argentinian Archives, who own the rights to this TV broadcast, have put it on their official YT channel in homage to Prince (look for Prince Rock In Rio on YT, it's in 2 parts).

Don't give your money to bootleggers.

There is zero doubt about it being a bootleg, and as I said above this show is far from "never before seen".

That's your decision. I used to purchase bootlegs too before the internet days, I had dozens of them. Now I don't see the point particularly since I've switched to digital anyway. My purpose it to warn people who buy those kind of things believing they are genuine: they are being scammed.

I wonder why they split it onto 2 CDs when the whole concert is available on Sabotage's release The South American Festivals on one disc (it's a two disc release but the second is a concert from Buenos Aires on the 21st).

I think it's strange that bootlegs are available through normal channels for normal prices. But what bothers me more is that through the same channels cd sets like One Nite Alone...Live! are offered for no less than 600 euros. Those websites should look after these kind of things. Maybe this Rock In Rio is a rip-off, but prices up to 600 euros are much worse. In some countries you can buy a small car for that kind of money...

"Having released 39 studio albums during his career which culminated in sales exceeding 100 million copies, and earning seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and entry into in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Prince still remained way above the gongs and baubles of celebrity, and had sufficient self-belief and the confidence to know himself what was worthy. The early 1990s marked one of many major stylistic shifts in Prince's career. Having parted ways with long-time backing band The Revolution in 1986 and released a number of albums as a solo artist, Prince put together a new group: The New Power Generation. The band featured Rosie Gaines on keyboard and vocals, Michael B. on drums, Sonny T. on bass, Levi Seacer, Jr. on guitar, Tommy Barbarella on keyboards and the Game Boyz - a trio of dancers, vocalists/rappers and percussionists. Their first album together, Diamond and Pearls, was released on 1st October 1991, eventually going double Platinum in the United States. At the beginning of the same year, Prince and his band were invited to play two dates as part of Rock In Rio 2, the second edition of the Brazilian-based music festival, the largest in the world. The recording featured here comes from Prince's first appearance at the event, when he headlined proceedings on Friday 18th January. The result, presented here across over two discs, is perhaps one of the finest shows in musical history. With the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout, Prince put on a quite superlative performance, as thrilling as ever, and featured such legendary tracks as 'Purple Rain', 'Kiss', 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and a staggering 28 minutes medley of 'Baby I'm A Star'. Surprisingly given the man's stature, he allows his co-vocalist Rosie Gaines to take lead duties on a couple of Aretha Franklin covers. Captured here in the highest available quality, the entire performance remains a poignant reminder of what an immense talent the world has lost."

Actually looking over the Sabotage release it's actually a combination of the soundboard and a not great audience recording, but there's also a DVD version floating around that is a full soundboard so I think that this must be ripped from that, so I suppose it is technically better than the previous audio release of it but it's still pointless given that there's a video version of the performance with the exact same audio.

Not to be hateful, but whoever was in charge of directing the Rock and Rio show footage was really a moron. They keep cutting away from Prince and showing band members every few seconds. It is just incredibly poor directiing.

.

The Tokyo 1990 show is maybe the best directed of all the recorded Prince concerts like that. I mean not counting the SOTT movie, much of which was recorded at PP, so doesn't count. But that one the director really did a great job and knew where to keep the focus.

Does this link work for you: https://play.google.com/s...wt5urlb7hm

Listening to the samples on that page it is clearly a full soundboard, unlike the Sabotage version.

I saw it on Google play and was tempted. I then found it on a very reputable Record store's website. I ask them in the shop and it is referenced (EAN code)so it has to be Legit-ish, although the lady didn't know the record company. against my better judgement I will go pre-order it. It was a radio broadcast so it may me official, but I am not happy about it getting out into mainstream record stores if it is not leggit.

In a word TORN. too good 2 b true. Purple Rain Syracruse is also coming. I wonder...

Imo the Lovesexy show in Dortmund was the best live capture. It was directed by Egbert van Hees and if the story is true, Prince later said to him: "This the best live footage I've seen of myself so far".

About the Tokyo show 1990: the cd that has been made of the show is good, but they messed with the order of the setlist. I don't know about the tv broadcast: I've seen it once way back and can't remember if the setlist was messed up as well. Too long ago when I last saw it. The show was aired over here as well back in 1990/1991.

There are at least 3 different edits of the Tokyo show:

- One was aired on French TV and apparently sold to various other TV channels in Europe if not worldwide: it had been edited down to 60mn and the songs order had been messed up (it started with take Me With U IIRC). I had recorded this on VHS at the time but never found a digital copy.

- Another one was complete and in order and with a short intro that showed bandmembers backstage before the show. This one is 1hr 24mn long, I had purchased it on a bootleg DVD and I've been able to rip the audio but not the video. I'm unsure where it was aired, the US maybe?

- The last one seems to be the one that was aired on japanese TV and is the only one I found a digital copy of online. It's 1hr 23mn long. I suspect it's the same as above minus the backstage intro but who knows if there aren't some other tiny differences.

Then I think I saw the French version. Like I said, I don't remember much but I do know that it was only 60 minutes, now that you mention it. The Question Of U was one of the songs they showed because I remember seeing Prince climbing up and down the scaffold.
The cd I have starts with Take Me With U, so it should be the audio version of the French broadcast. Thanks 4 the info!

More of these releases have appeared.

In iTunes: Live At The Miami Glam Slam ('94)

Google Play: also that one, plus Rio de Janeiro 1991, Complete East Glam Slam Show ('94, same as Live At.. but way low price), and Rock in Rio 2.

Makes me kind of sad..
